this coming from Mr. Sarcasm? bwahahahaah! ur a funny guy ! ;)

In "Hockey related news" is it not funny that the Habs and Leafs just cant seem to get away from one another in the standings?...... both put up shutouts, both of their best D men played a heck of a game and both goaltenders were outstanding!, eerily similar!

only separated by 2 points on December 20th.,, not bad after the Leafs started out the season 0-7-1 ,... , well, not bad for the Leafs

Wrong thread Iggy.

Insults and sarcasm ("what's that say about scabs fans then? roll eyes")

And...the insults, sarcasm and general negativity are accompanied by no constructive or informative hockey talk.

Another "bwahaha"? I rest my case.

Yes I agree that it was eerily similar. Then again the two teams are not that far apart in "skill" level although a healthy habs team is definitely better - at least by a little bit. So far even an unhealthy habs team has slightly outperformed the leafs.

another bwhahaha? do you even understand the internet ? we already have established you know notta about Hockey , ok listen real well, the term "bwhahaa" means the same thing as "lol" or "rofl" or "haha" or :D, or "hihi" or "roflmao" , shall i continue? i called a truce and you just wanna keep disturbing the peace, grow up, at least in this thread... let it go bro, you will feel better ;) ... ok end of your internet 101 lesson for the day...lets stop this in this thread and get back to Hockey, and go ahead and post another foolish post, i am done with it in here, so go ahead and knock yourself out with another slam, as the bigger man i will let you have the final say

As far as the Habs performing better than the Leafs, well, they have 2 more points with a game in hand, i would say thats dead even . The Leafs like i said, need goaltending, and everything else can fall into place if you have good goaltending, except in the case of the Habs, they have 2 good goalies yet as of Dec20th have only 2 more points than the Leafs, WITH that extra game played, so it's not always the case, BUT the Leafs can put the puck in the net, sonething the Habs have not been able to do consistently

One thing is for sure, it is gonna be a close race til the end, so many teams all bunched up looking for that last playoff spot. Good Stuff Indeed!

if a flying elbow to the head is clean then ya, it was clean.... i heard the league is reviewing it so let them decide, but i doubt a suspension will follow as Stajan had his head slightly down, but with the NHL trying to enforce head shots, Boychuck might still get a game or 2....
Boychuck levels Stajan with a beautiful CLEAN hit, unless you're a blind Leaf's fan, then of course it's not clean.

whats time got to do with anything?, it was you crying to me on msn messenger only 12 minutes earlier that it was a clean hit and getting all riled up so it was inevitable that you would soon bring it here

HNIC showed a slow mo of it and you clearly see the elbow to the head, BUT, like i said before, Stajan had his head slightly downward so i doubt a suspension will come out of it, what part of this is making you mad now? the fact i am not saying it was legal? lol...... calm down, it's just a game, i think you need to get back to Mtl ASAP!!! relieve that stress my friend :)

Really? It took you 11 minutes to respond, what a surprise. Wonder what your reaction would have been had it been Komi on Bergeron? ;)

Too bad you got it the wrong way around Iggy but then again it doesn't surprise me. When something doesn't go your teams way then whine, whine, whine away. Lol. Clean as they come. Last night you were whining about Boychuck leaving his feet, seems like you laid off that argument now too. Speaking of laid, yea, at least you got something right, I do need to get back to my lovely confines of Montreal. :D

when u contacted me to "gloat"last night, the hit was like 2 minutes old and i hadnt seen a replay yet and at regular speed, doesnt it look like he left his feet? ?? like i said, he may get a game or 2, but the elbow was there to the head... if you cant see that then your as blind as they come, and yes stajan had his head down, thats why he might not get suspended, stop blowing everything out of proportion K man, and yes, Mtl seems quite the idea on these long cold winter nights ... meet ya at Bru, then Boustan, your buying :D

Personally i think the hit was too close to call. I doubt there'll be a suspension. If that's not a legal hit, every single hits that Chara makes is illegal, because of his height & most player's heads are at his shoulder area.

If a Leaf had made the same hit, i would have said "That's a hell of a hit!! Bravo!!" But since it's the opposing team making it, i'll say that it's 50-50 if it was legal or not. I'll give Stajan credit for not missing a single shift after getting clobbered by that devastating hit!

Kovalchuk reportedly seeking $100 deal

All eyes are on Ilya Kovalchuk.

The Atlanta Thrashers are still trying to sign the high-scoring winger to a long-term deal before he becomes an unrestricted free agent next July, but many NHL GMs are waiting to see if Kovalchuk is going to be available at the March 3 trade deadline.

Kovalchuk is earning $7.5 million (all terms US) this season in the final year of his contract. League sources say Thrashers GM Don Waddell is prepared to offer a long-term deal in the $100-million range to try to keep the 26-year-old Kovalchuk in an Atlanta uniform for the rest of his career.

There is talk — which has been denied — that Kovalchuk wants a 10-year contract in the range of $11 million a season. That’s more than Alex Ovechkin earns ($9.29 million a season), and as the NHL’s top player, Ovechkin sets the salary bar.

If Waddell and Kovalchuk can’t come to terms soon, the Thrashers GM will have to consider shopping Kovalchuk at the deadline. Sources say the Kings, Bruins, Capitals, Rangers, Avs and Devils will be among the teams most aggressively pursuing a top-shelf offensive player.

The belief is Kovalchuk wants to stay in Atlanta because he doesn’t face much pressure playing for the Thrashers. The two sides met again Saturday and have more meetings planned.

“You’re going to see a lot of teams trying to get in there,” said a league executive. “A lot of people are just waiting to see where this goes. The Thrashers can’t afford to just let their best player walk away next season. If Kovalchuk plays hardball, it gets interesting.”

Senators' Mike Fisher gets engaged to country superstar Carrie Underwood

Mike & Carrie engaged

Senator kept relationship private

Senators heartthrob Mike Fisher and his country singer superstar girlfriend Carrie Underwood are engaged to be married.

Fisher confirmed their engagement just moments ago as the Senators prepared for tonight's game against the Boston Bruins at Scoriabank Place. Responding to questions, he said he popped the question to Underwood on Sunday, but declined to offer any other details at this point.

"It's true," said Fisher. "We're both obviously excited and very happy."

Senators teammate Chris Neil said Fisher called him not long after popping the question.

"I think it's great. It's a long time coming. There's going to be a lot of broken hearts in Ottawa with all those girls who are in love with Mikey," said Neil.

The blogosphere had been alive and buzzing since Sunday with rumours the celebrity couple had become engaged. The rumours began spreading after a friend of Underwood’s family congratulated the former American Idol and the Senators centre on their upcoming marriage on his Twitter page last night.

This morning, a source close to the couple confirmed to the Ottawa Sun that Fisher popped the question and Underwood had accepted the proposal.

Underwood, who makes her home in Nashville, was in Ottawa through the weekend and was on hand for the club's 4-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild Saturday at Scotiabank Place. It's not known if she will also be at tonight's game against the Boston Bruins.

The couple has been dating for approximately a year. They have kept their relationship largely out of the media -- quite an accomplishment for one of Nashville's hottest stars and one of the NHL's most eligible bachelors -- but had recently begun speaking in public about their love affair.

It's so quiet in here. Things seem to be back to normal in hockey land. Habs are winning again with one of the best power plays in the league, and the Leafs, well, at least they are trying to win.

Did I actually read on here from one of the so called Leaf experts that MARKOV will not make a difference ,and that he is not one of the league's best defensemen. That has to be one of the Doc's all time classic stupid quotes. I just hope that his sp reviews are not as foolish as his hockey reviews.

Please find the quote where i supposedly 'foolishly' said that Markov wasn't one of the league's best defensemen.

I've never said he wasn't. I've always said he was. What i remember saying is that his return to the team wouldn't have as big an impact as people believe it would be since on the offensive side, JF Bergeron had been doing the job as Markov's replacement, if not better. I did say many times that Bergeron is terrible defensively, which is where Markov excels. I also remember saying that the Habs big problem wasn't keeping pucks out of its net, but putting them in the opposition's net. Which is why i don't believe Markov's impact will be as noticed as Gionta's return to the lineup.

Just because Mtl finally won deservedly against the league's doormat (Carolina) doesn't mean that Markov's return was a noticeable one. What about the other night when Halak miraculously won a game for them after facing nearly 50 shots against Atlanta? Where was Markov then?

I'd say that 3 goals in 3 games for a defenceman coming back from a long serious injury is at least a little noticeable.

Russia says 'niet' to Kovalev

The Russian Olympic team has passed on Alexei Kovalev.

The only Senator named to the Russian squad was defenceman Anton Volchenkov when the 23-man roster was announced Friday morning.

Kovalev won't be surprised by the news he's not on the team. The 36-year-old told the Sun Tuesday he didn't feel he "had a chance" to make the squad and that team officials were going to "take the guys with more points."

The underachieving Kovalev has seven goals and 13 assists this season. He said he wouldn't mind "having the 10 days off."

Ottawa's Alfredsson out for a month

Alfie possibly out for a month

Senators captain tells Swedish paper he's gone 'a while'

Cory Clouston is facing the biggest challenge of his NHL coaching career starting tonight in Buffalo: Winning without captain Daniel Alfredsson.

Alfredsson, who suffered a suspected separated shoulder after a hit from Penguin Craig Adams in the first period of Wednesday’s 8-2 loss in Pittsburgh, said he’ll be out “for weeks” following the defeat.

However, the Swedish newspaper Expressen reported Christmas Eve, after Alfredsson had seen team doctors, that he’ll be out four weeks but his chances of playing for Sweden in Olympics are not in jeopardy.

An official update will be provided this morning at the HSBC Arena, but there’s no reason to question the accuracy of the Swedish report. Two league executives said separated shoulders usually take 3-6 weeks to heal, depending on the severity.

“I can’t say how long I will be gone, but it is weeks in all cases. There is no super-serious injury, but the clavicle and scapula have received a blow, so I need to rest for a while,” Alfredsson told Expressen.

While Clouston won’t celebrate his first year behind the Ottawa bench until Feb. 2, he hasn’t faced this kind of adversity since he took over. The Senators sit seventh in the Eastern Conference, but a single Ottawa loss combined with victories by the Rangers, Habs and Panthers would drop the Senators to 10th.

Already without centre Jason Spezza (knee) and winger Nick Foligno (knee), losing Alfredsson is a huge blow, especially when you consider the Senators’ record without him. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, since the start of the 2005-06 season, Ottawa is 6-18-1 (.260) when Alfredsson isn’t in the lineup.

That makes this a pivotal time in Clouston’s short tenure. It will be up to him to coax more from a depleted lineup that is already finding it difficult to score this season.

Alfredsson was stuck in a 12-game scoring slump before he was injured, but he’s still the Senators’ best player. He attracts a lot of attention from the opposition, which opens up space for his teammates and he’s still the main cog on the power-play and penalty-killing units.

He said the Senators have to soldier on without him.

“Given that we have Jason Spezza out until the Olympic break, this is no good for the team, but now the guys have to bite the bullet and try to win as many games as they can until we’re back,” said Alfredsson.

On the heels of the putrid Pittsburgh loss, that might be easier said than done.

“You can’t replace your captain. There’s no question about that,” said centre Mike Fisher. “We have to stick together as a team. Guys have to step up. It’s the same thing when we lost (Spezza). We need more desperation and we’ve got to play as a team.

“We’ve got to grind out games. Our top offensive guys are out. We’ve got to find ways to win and compete and battle. If we don’t play as a team, we’re not going to win.”

Losing Alfredsson can’t be used as an excuse.

“That’s a big loss. He’s definitely our leader and a key player on our team,” said goalie Pascal Leclaire. “We’re getting into the injury bug a little bit, especially with our key guys, but we’ve got good guys here and we’re all going to have to step it up a bit.

“We’re going to be all right. Every team goes through it. We’re going through it right now, but we’ll figure it out.”

The issue for the Senators is they were starting to get healthy. Wingers Chris Neil (knee), Shean Donovan (knee) and Leclaire (cheek), all returned against the Penguins.

“We were looking okay and then this happens. It just seems unfortunate,” said Fisher.

A big loss is right! Even at his advanced age Alfredsson is one of the top dozen or so best players in the league. Others include - in no particular order, and not counting goalies (a separate breed!) - Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Lidstrom (even at his advanced age!), Ovechkin, Iginla, Crosby, Malkin, St. Louis, Chara, Gaborik, Savard (no, not Thornton although he's close).

Jason Spezza & Danny Alfredsson out for some time. It's almost like the Pens losing Crosby & Malkin! Players like Kovalev will have to step up their game & start earning their inflated contracts. I wonder if Brian Murray will try to pull off a trade in order to help his team until the Olympics come around?
