after his last horrid game yesterday, his trade value went downhill

So he had a bad game. He was overdue for one anyways and one game won't affect any player's trade value. Besides with Gainey's record in dealing with free agents, why would anyone bother trading for any Habs' UFA or RFA? Just wait for the end of the season and pick them up while Gainey sits on his ass pondering what to do.

i take it you would not mind Gainey getting fired or resigning?

I'll probably jump for joy the day he leaves. Doesn't his contract expire at the end of this season?

Leafs Still In Need Of Drastic Change

Based on the manner in which the Washington Capitals abused the Leafs Friday at the Verizon Center – it was merciless; akin to pulling the wings off a fly – Burke ought to horde as much dynamite as possible. ... this cave-in proved, graphically, how devoid of skill and mettle the Leafs really are.

[the Leafs] A tougher team to play against this season? Give me a break.

Rumors around the NHL today

Brian Burke would try to sign Kovalchuk after this season or soon and unite him with Phil Kessel & Nazem Kadri next year on a line which would be dubbed "The Special K Line". No joke.

Jonas Hiller has indicated he might leave the Ducks after this season & become a free agent.

The Dallas Stars are starting to look at replacing Marty Turco as their goalie of the future. Jaroslav Halak or Carey Price maybe? Fabian Brunnstrom has been rumored to be on his way to Mtl.

St-Louis rumoured to be sending David Perron & another player, possibly T.J. Oshie, to the Carolina Hurricanes for Eric Staal.

Habs are trying to unload Georges Laracque, but there are no takers. It's probably they'll buy out his contract once the season ends if they can't find a trade partner.

A Gentleman Enforcer Turns His Focus to Haiti

I dedicate this goal to all the Haitians, to my family members and to all of those who lost loved ones or who are looking for them.”

Laraque is one of a handful of N.H.L. players of Haitian descent.

Laraque becomes eloquent spokesman for Haiti cause

Before the earthquake hit he was already involved in a campaign to build a school in Port au Prince.

Laraque has become an eloquent spokesman for the local Haitian community, in both English and French. He is actually quite articulate and chooses his words well.

And in a very classless move due to the timing, the Habs have just bought out Laraque's contract and he's played his last game for the team. Really shitty thing to do considering the circumstances. Very disappointing.

Once again, i have to wholeheartedly agree with you. It also appeard that Laracque agrees with us that it was a really classless move on the part of the organization:

Habs cut Laracque

MONTREAL – RDS reports are confirmed: Georges Laraque is no longer a Canadien, his salary to be paid through the rest of this season before he is bought out at season`s end.

Laraque has told TSN`s Darren Dreger that the move is "classless." Blunt words from Laraque, and no one can blame him.

The Gazette`s Pat Hickey says the club will pay Laraque two-thirds of his contracted salary in 2010-11, that is, $1 million of the $1.5 million on his contract. The club can spread the cap hit over two years, thus $500,000 next season and again in 2011-12.

Clearly, the writing was on the wall Wednesday night when Laraque was a healthy scratch with St. Louis muscleman Cam Janssen in the Blues` lineup.

Considering that they're on the hook for his entire salary this year, they could have found a better way to handle this. Gainey said that he ofered him a leave of absence and that George said no thanks, that he could play despite his emotions over the Haiti situation. So instead of Gainey being honest with him and really explaining the situation, and maybe then George would have said ok, lets do it that way, Gainey just goes and does this classless act. It was announced on the Team990 this morning before Laraque had even been notified. And he was notified by phone, not even the balls to do it in person.

Totally disgraceful. The main problem with the Habs isn't on the ice, it's in the office and it's past time to do a house cleaning. Get rid of Gainey, trade his precious Carey Price to whatever team Gainey ends up with, get a decent offensively minded coach and let's get on with playing hockey.

What's unfortunate in this whole situation is that Georges Laracque could have become the Habs top ambassador one day. He was already its most charismatic player, and even though i'm not a Habs fan, i actually like Georges. He seems like a very decent person & quite likeable. He'd be great on tv.

I also heard earlier that after the game, Laracque & Jacques Martin supposedly got into a heated arguement & that Laracque left & went to see Gainey afterwards. It's entirely possible that Laracque was upset that no one went after Janssen after his collision with Price & that he couldn't do the job if he wasn't even dressed for the game. Who knows. Anyways, Gainey's explanation to the media was that Laracque had become a distraction & that the decision had been made last week. However, due to what later occurred in Haiti, management had decided to wait until letting him go. I find this total b.s. & absolutely classless!

Yet another example of why this poster has zero credibility and is completely irrelevant. Recall this clown has posted on many occasions that Gomez is an overpaid bum (or words to that effect), but now would look good in Toronto on a line with Kessel.

Brind'Amour out as Captain

For those of you who are Facebook users, you probably know about "I’m With Coco," a fan page supporting Conan O’Brien in his struggles with NBC over control of "The Tonight Show."

The O'Brien-Jay Leno fiasco has its similarities to veteran Rod Brind`Amour passing on the Hurricanes captaincy to Eric Staal yesterday. But unlike "The Tonight Show" drama, this move doesn't require picking a side, even though some have decided to.

Both situations involve a red-headed up-and-comer pegged to succeed a grizzled veteran best recognized by his unique face — one battle-scarred, the other sporting a jutting chin. Also, there was a clear plan of succession: Leno was told back in 2004 that O’Brien would take over "The Tonight Show" this year, while Staal was openly labeled the future captain as soon as he inked his long-term deal prior to last season.

That's not to say there aren't differences. Leno left "Tonight" at the top of his game, leading the late night ratings over rival David Letterman. In fact, he was more or less forced from the spot when O’Brien was promised the show during his last contract negotiation. Brind`Amour, on the other hand, has slowed the past two seasons, hampered by the accumulating injuries and aging that seemed to avoid him for much of his career. No longer the player he once was — Brind`Amour mentioned to the media Wednesday that the best way for him to lead was to do so on the ice, and playing less than 10 minutes most nights didn't allow him to do so — Carolina's No. 17 agreed with Jim Rutherford to relinquish his captaincy to Staal.

Leno also agreed to let go back in '04, setting off a five-year plan that would leave "Tonight" for O'Brien. But as the time approached to hand over the reins, Leno — still dominating the scene — continued to have the late night bug. In an effort to keep him from heading to a rival network and competing with Conan head to head, NBC hatched a plan that would feature Leno on a new show before O'Brien. When it stumbled, a panicked NBC pulled the plug on both Leno and O'Brien, and today announced that O'Brien had parted ways with NBC, paving the way for Leno's return to "The Tonight Show."

While we're only one day into the Staal captaincy, you can bet there will be no backpedalling by Brind`Amour. Like Leno, he knew years ago that one day this young pup would replace him as the top dog. And while Brind`Amour — or anyone, really — didn't envision it happening in the middle of a season, eight months removed from a visit to the Eastern Conference Finals, he handled the move with the class, dignity and professionalism he has exhibited for 21 years on and off the ice. Was he happy about it? I'd guess no, but Brind`Amour has never been about personal goals, accomplishments or recognition, but rather integrity, the team and, most importantly, the game of hockey.

As for Staal, this could not have been easy. When Brind`Amour took over for Ron Francis as Carolina's captain, the choice and timing was easy. Coming out of the lockout, Francis had retired. Brind`Amour — a long-time wearer of an "A" in Philadelphia and Carolina — was the obvious choice. The Canes were rewarded for that choice when Brind`Amour hoisted the Stanley Cup June 19, 2006, on the RBC Center ice.

Right now, in the middle of perhaps the Hurricanes’ most disastrous season, neither the timing nor the decision was so easy. But Staal — still just 25, but in in his sixth NHL season and seventh professionally — handled the transition with poise and character, surely guided by the lessons learned under both Brind`Amour and Francis.

We won't know until well down the road if naming Staal Carolina's fifth captain and the franchise's 13th was the right move — that starts tonight — and some will always question the timing of the change. One thing we do know is it's not time to pick a camp and argue for it. What's done is done.

The NBC late night battle has those standing behind Jay and others with "Coco." When it comes to Staal and Brind`Amour, I'll just say this: I'm with "Both-O."

I for one will be glad to see Conan O'Brien off the air. I never could stand the guy, he's a spooky weirdo, he's not funny & he sucked as the host of The Tonight Show. They could have replaced him with either Bob Gainey or Jacques Martin & it would have the same effect!

I stopped watching the Tonight Show when he replaced Leno & Leno's return won't be a day sooner.

As for the Carolina captaincy, i understand the reason, but it's still an odd way to go about it. I wonder when the Leafs & Habs will finally name a captain?

What some Bruins fans are saying

While some Leafs fans bemoan the trade which sent two first-round draft picks and a second-rounder to Boston for Phil Kessel, a Bruins supporter called in to complain about the wisdom of the deal from the other end.

“What good are those draft picks when the Bruins need scoring now,” he said, figuring that Boston could be an Eastern Conference contender with Kessel in its lineup.

The Bruins are averaging 2.43 goals a game, worst in the NHL.
