Brendan Burke killed in car accident

TORONTO -- Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke's youngest son has been killed in a car accident in snowy Indiana.

The team issued a brief statement Friday night confirming the death of 21-year-old Brendan Burke.

Police tell the Toronto Star that Burke was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee when the vehicle slid sideways into the path of a Ford truck. Burke's friend, 18-year-old Mark Reedy, also died in the accident.

Brian Burke also is the general manager of the U.S. Olympic team.

Richard Peddie, president and chief executive officer of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, issued this statement: "On behalf of the entire Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment family, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Brian Burke. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Burke family during this extremely difficult time."

Tampa Bay Lightning finally sold. Vinnie next to go?

An agreement has been reached to sell the Tampa Bay Lightning to Boston hedge fund manager Jeff Vinik, the NHL club announced Friday.

"Buying the Lightning and joining the Tampa Bay community is a dream come true," Vinik said in a statement released by the team. "I've been an avid hockey fan my whole life and I pledge to our fans that I will work my hardest to build the Lightning into a world class organization both on and off the ice."

The transaction still needs official approval from the NHL's Board of Governors.

Vinik and the NHL have been hammering out the deal throughout the week at the league's head office in New York.

Current Lightning owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie will not keep any interest in the team or stay on to play any role. Koules had hoped to stay on in some capacity, but that will not be the case.

"I'm really proud, when we got here we were last in everything and we've put together a system where as of today, we're top 15 in prospects and both our AHL team and our NHL is currently in a playoff spot," Koules told ESPN.com Friday. "A lot of credit goes to GM Brian Lawton. We put in a lot of work here. The hockey side of this organization was in disarray when we took over 19 months ago."

Koules and Barrie bought the team for about $200 million in June 2008. The sale price to Vinik is not official but a source said it would be close to $170 million.

The Lightning are officially listed as 24th in the NHL in home attendance but a source told ESPN.com the club was 29th in the league in ticket revenue and the club was in financial difficulty because of it.

Vinik, 50, is the founder and chairman of Vinik Asset Management and a minority owner of the Boston Red Sox.

Very sad news.

I can’t help but be reminded about your tasteless comments about Bob’s personal tragedy – in fact, here is what you what you had to say (before you deleted your post)

nothing is more ignorant than a puppet not realising his strings are being so cleverly choreographed by the puppet master :)

even your scapegoat team is underachieving, thus contradicting the meaning., Duh... ,,, would you like the LA Kings for the rest of the season? :D

You have GOT to stop spending so much time with lg, Doc. You're even picking up his total ignorance of vocabulary.

Wrong thread lg and wrong - as usual - use of the word "scapegoat".

Heartiest congratulations to the leafs however, who are currently enjoying one of their longest winning streaks of the season : one game.

some people are just to damn dense ... damn canadian educational system messing up Cairo again, guess he will never get it

Actually it's lucky for leaf fans that leaf win streaks usually don't go past one, because most leaf fans can't count past one.

They will have to learn the number two to answer this question though: how many cancers do the leafs now have on the roster? Answer : two - it used to be just one (Phil) but now that Dion has arrived it's up to two. Get out the calculators, leaf fans.

wrong thread, look up the word hypocrite, :)

and once again your lack of real hockey knowledge shines thru, very few teams would not want those 2 players, there GREAT additions to the Leafs and would be to alot of others as well......

Giguere gets second consecutive shutout by blanking streaking Ottawa 5-0 as Leafs dominate

TORONTO -- Jean-Sebastien Giguere became the first goalie in Toronto history to have shutouts in his first two games with the team, stopping 30 shots to help the Maple Leafs beat Ottawa 5-0 on Saturday night -- ending the Senators' winning streak at 11.

Acquired in a trade with Anaheim on Jan. 31, Giguere beat New Jersey 3-0 on Tuesday night in his Maple Leafs debut.

Phil Kessel and Luke Schenn each had two goals and an assist, and Tyler Bozak also scored for the Maple Leafs.

The Senators hadn't lost a game since Jan. 12, establishing a franchise record by reeling off 11 straight wins. Ottawa had not allowed more than two goals in a game since that loss, a 6-1 defeat in Atlanta.

"We were playing so well, it's a shame we had to lose this way," Senators center Jason Spezza said. "We were feeling good, we were working hard and everything was going great. This gives us a dose of humility."

Fans in both the upper and lower bowl celebrated with a rarely seen wave that lasted through an entire commercial break in the third period.

Nobody wanted them (including their former teams). That's why an incompetent like BB was able to land them.

Gainey gives up & quits on the Habs

MONTREAL – The Canadiens didn’t have to look far to find a replacement when general manager Bob Gainey decided to step down.

Pierre Gauthier, who has served as Gainey’s right-hand man for the past 61⁄2 years, is the team’s new GM.

“I’ve done my best and now it’s time for me to pass the torch,” Gainey said during a news conference at the Bell Centre yesterday afternoon. “I believe that the general manager position requires a long-term vision and a long-term commitment. At this point, I’m not prepared to make a commitment of four or five or six more years in this position.

“If I had to choose between leaving a little earlier, or a

little later, I’d prefer (to go) earlier,” added Gainey, who will remain with the organization as an adviser to Gauthier.

The decision to step down at this time allows Gauthier to apply his vision, although it would seem there will be few short-term changes.

Gainey and Gauthier said they have been talking to other teams about possible trades, but it appears the Canadiens are intent on keeping goalies Carey Price and Jaroslav

Halak for the time being.

“We have two excellent young goaltenders,” Gauthier said, repeating a mantra that flies in the face of the fact

that Price has lost twice as many games as he has won during the past calendar year. “They both want to be No. 1 and there will be a time when they may be with different teams, but it’s not now.”

Gauthier noted the Canadiens are a “new” team after Gainey’s decision to make wholesale changes in July.

“We have 11 new players from nine different organizations, and I think we only have four players who have been with us for two or more seasons,” Gauthier said.

“Getting the team to where we want it to be is part of an ongoing process.”

One of the players who has been around for more than two seasons is leading scorer Tomas Plekanec, who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Gainey has been criticized – at times unfairly – for not negotiating with players during the season, but Gauthier said the team has talked with Plekanec’s agent, Rick Curran.

Gauthier said both sides are interested in reaching an agreement, but the Canadiens face some salary-cap issues going forward. The team is currently committed to 12 players for a total of $44.8 million U.S. for next season.

With the cap almost certainly going down from the present $56.8 million, Gauthier will have to do some fancy stick-handling to satisfy Plekanec, restricted free agents Benoit Pouliot, Price and Halak, and then fill in the gaps with five or six other bodies.

Team president Pierre Boivin said he considered looking outside the organization for Gainey’s replacement, but that it was a brief look. He noted that the list of qualified candidates didn’t go on “ad infinitum” and that Gauthier met the major criteria for the job – experience and an ability to communicate in both languages.

Gauthier has previous experience as a general manager in Ottawa and Anaheim.

He played a key role in building the Senators, acquiring Wade Redden and Damian Rhodes in trades, and drafting Chris Phillips, Andreas Dackell, Marian Hossa, Mike Fisher and Chris Neil. Gauthier earned a reputation for finding unrecognized talent in Sweden, even picking up some of the language. He also helped rebuild the Mighty Ducks and provided a key element in Anaheim’s Stanley Cup victory in 2007 by trading for goaltender Jean-Sébastien Giguère.

But Gauthier rejected the notion the Canadiens might be better off going through some losing seasons and rebuilding.

“What we’re doing is building,” Gauthier said. “We have the same goal as every other team, and that’s to win the Stanley Cup. To do that, we first have to establish ourselves as a top-tier team and to do that consistently.”

Rumors around the NHL today

-Many GMs around the league deem Tim Thomas of the Bruins to be untradeable. Even though the Bruins would love to get rid of his contract, that same contract is what will likely keep him in Boston for the next couple of years. Not too many teams are interested in a 35-year old goalie with a $4-year/$20 million contract.

-The St. Louis Blues have told other GMs around the league that defenceman Carlo Colaiacovo is a available. Rumors have also been circulating that Paul Kariya has also been dangled around by the Blues.

-Pittsburgh is anxious to trade for a top forward & pair him up with Evgeni Malkin. They've been scouting the likes of Alex Ponikarovsky, Ray Whitney, Keith Tkachuk, Paul Kariya & Ethan Moreau.

-Don't expect the Habs to trade either Carey Price or Jaroslav Halak anytime soon. New GM Pierre Gauthier indicated yesterday that he will likely hold on to both goalies since they give the team their best chance to make it into the playoffs.

You just destroyed your own argument. Obviously salary is not a measure of quality...because if it IS, then Gomez must be way better than Phaneuf since Gomez gets 8 versus Phaneuf's 6...and I know you're not a Gomez fan (unless he gets traded to the hopeless leafs). The fact that Dion gets 6 million just means that Calgary made a mistake and was then lucky enough to unload their overpaid, underachieving, gutless, shit disturber of a player on that inept BB.

And if you want PROOF of how gutless and overrated Phaneuf is, just look at last night's game, where Dion took a cowardly run at Jody Shelley hitting him from behind. No problem for Shelley who then gave a facewash to big bad (ha ha) Dion and knocked him on his gutless ass. That was the second Maple Loser that Shelley took care of last night. The first was that clown Colton Orr, who was absolutely destroyed by Shelley in a fight...and since all Colton CAN do is fight, maybe he's washed up...even on a joke team like the leafs.

By the way, sad news for leaf fans: their loss last night means that their latest "win streak" (ha ha!) AGAIN ended at their usual number of ONE!
