Today's news around the NHL

-Several GMs around the league are inquiring about the availability of Trashers' Colby Armstrong, Pavel Kubina, Slava Kozlov & Eric Boulton.

-Isles' Martin Biron is pushing hard for a trade, being relegated to #3 goalie status since Rick Dipietro's return to the lineup. He doesn't care where he'll go, he just wants to play.

-Don't expect Bruins' Tim Thomas to be traded soon, even though the Bruins would dearly want to move him. Most teams find him too expensive, he has a no-trade clause in his contract, and he's stated he's not interested in uprooting his family.

-Due to Ray Emery's uncertain health status, the Flyers might be shopping for a goaltender. Dallas' Marty Turco is available if they can obtain good value for him. The Flyers don't seem to be interested in ex-Flyer Martin Biron.

-Team Canada has told Flyers' Jeff Carter to come to the Olympics as a reserve & be ready to step-in if injured forward Ryan Getzlaf can't play. Getzlaf injured his ankle last week.

Why didn't Ovechkin get the penalty box for his little stunt last night?

Do his scores always involve plowing through another player?

Penalty for what? Bodychecking? Even the french media were saying after the game & this morning that it was a hell of a play on his part & that Washington got robbed of a goal on that play.

By the way, how the hell did Metropolit get away with scoring that goal? He clearly redirected the puck into the net with his skate.

The league should start a full-blown investigation into referees & their possible gambling connections. Especially in games involving Montreal, who constantly get questionnable calls in their favor.

It must really suck being a Leaf fan. I actually pity the pathetic fools who support this farce of a team.Especially the ones who come all the way to Montreal to get their balls emptied after another Leaf lost.

I feel the same way about the poor Habs fans who are truly delusional about their sad-sack team. A team with overpaid midgets, without much of a future, led by a zombie. I pitty the fools!

No one can predict the future. You peoples, of all,(Laffs fans that is) have been saying this since 67,yet nothing good ever happend since. And last time I checked, even with a lifeless coach,a bunch of midgets,a few rookies,a load of injured key players(Cammalleri,Pouliot,Kostsytsyn,Bergeron) the Habs are still 15 points AHEAD of your pathetic, lifeless, hopeless, talentless, gutless, and wathever-less lot known as the marble laffs!!!

Blues shut out Leafs 4-0

the hangover from their bland, mistake-filled season prior to the trades returned with a vengeance Friday night.

Former Leaf Alex Steen made it 3-0 minutes later in the second, beating two Leafs for possession of the puck behind the net,

Toronto had five power-play opportunities, and gave up the shorthanded goals, an astonishing example of the lack of competitiveness and mistakes that plagued them on the evening.

Today's news around the NHL

Ray Whitney to be traded to Kings after Olympics?

The Los Angeles Kings already have a deal in place to acquire Ray Whitney from the Carolina Hurricanes. The Kings will send a first-round pick and a prospect to the Canes. But just one problem: Whitney still won't waive his no-trade clause, unless he gets a three-year extension. We knew the Kings probably wouldn't trade him until after the Olympic trade freeze, and The Fourth Period reports that Whitney and the Kings are still trying to negotiate something that will push Whitney to waive the clause. One theory on why he wants a longer deal: He may be hoping to stay on the East Coast, since he has three kids at home. The Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers could also get into the mix if this deal doesn't go through. It will all depend on their negotiations over the next two weeks.

Toronto to hold on to Alex Ponikarovsky until trade deadline

Seeing that Florida was able to obtain a 2nd-round pick for Dominic Moore when he was dealt to Montreal, Toronto has decided to hold off any trades for Alex Ponikarovsky unless someone offers them a 1st-round pick. Thinking the best they could obtain for Ponikarovsky would be a 2nd-round pick (already offered to them by several teams, along with a player or two), the Leafs realize they have something of value on their hands & will await a buyer. Rumors have Poni going to Pittsburgh & Atlanta, among approximately 10 teams.

Molson brothers to sell Habs?

Disappointed with their purchase of the underachieving Habs, the Molson brothers have been rumoured to possibly be putting the team up for sale after the season ends. Among the rumoured potential buyers are the estate of the late Harold Ballard, the late owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Insiders claim son Bill Ballard & his sibblings are anxious to get back into the hockey arena & would be interested in purchasing the Habs. Word is that former Leafs GM Gord Stellick would be in line to replace Pierre Gauthier as Habs GM if the sale ever goes through. It is not known if former Leafs coaches John Brophy, Dan Maloney or Pat Burns might be interested in the coaching job if approached by management.

Panthers expected to be busy on the trade market after Olympics

There was buzz that Florida Panthers GM Randy Sexton is working on nine different deals, and one of those went through at this Olympic trade deadline.

But expect a lot more. Sexton told the Miami Herald that he expects GMs to be more focused at the real trade deadline on March 3, so he might push several deals. We know he wants to blow up this team, and that no one is off-limits, so he'll be busy during this two-week trade freeze.

Meanwhile, Sexton is likely looking for a power play forward on the trade market, a depth defenseman and a tough, gritty player. Panthers may be trading everyone, but the most likely trade candidates are Jordan Leopold, Dennis Seidenberg, Rostislav Olesz and Kamil Kreps.

B's back?

Good to see the Bruins playing well going into the Olympic break with a 4 game win streak, all on the road. Sitting in 6th place in the East currently. Hopefully no one gets injured at the Games and they can continue their improving play.

As long as Tim Thomas doesn't start most of the games until the end of the regular season, the B's should be in good shape for the playoffs. They'd love to get rid of Thomas and annoint Tuukka Rask with the #1 goaltending job, but Thomas' big multiyear contract has scared everyone away & the Bruins are likely stuck with him for at least another 2 seasons.

Yea, I thought that was a mistake when they gave it to him. He had one good season (last year) and it was a result of 99% being lucky, he's a flounder in net, all over the place and no real approach to goaltending, now it's starting to catch up with him. Hopefully some sucker will take him off the B's hands.

BTW, what happened to your red name Doc?

Leaf losers

It's been 43 long years
Anatomy of Leafs losing streak

They are the Sultans of Squat.

Last week, 43 years after the birth of the expansion franchise, Saints fans could throw away the bags and celebrate a Super Bowl.

By cruel coincidence, it is 43 years since the Toronto Maple Leafs last won a championship but unlike the Saints, that is not about to change.

Tales of Leafs follies have belonged as much in the funny pages as the sports pages.

It was all supposed to be different this year. This was supposed to be the season that would end the playoff drought.

... the team got off to its worst start in history. ... the sporting world's greatest losers.

Canadian hockey hero battling leukemia

One of the most popular figures in Canadian hockey history is battling cancer.

Paul Henderson, who scored the historic winning goal for Canada in its 1972 Summit Series with the former Soviet Union, says he has been diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Henderson made the stunning admission Thursday on CBC and added he's been fighting the disease since November.

"I have no angst in my body, no fear whatsoever," Henderson said. "I have no fear and I really believe that's because of my faith.

"I'm going to be aggressively taking a look at this for sure. The stuff I have doesn't respond well to early treatment, so we haven't done anything yet.

"Obviously I'm educating myself like crazy, I might end up going to Germany or down to the (U.S.) to do something. I'm going to be very aggressive in trying to arrest it.'

Henderson, a devout Christian, says because of his faith he's not afraid of the prospect of losing his battle with the cancer.

"I still sleep at night," he said. "I'm not worried about dying; I know I'm going to die some day.

"I'm 67 and, man, I can't think of anybody more fortunate than I am. But it's nice to have that inner peace. My philosophy is I take today, live it the best way I can and if I wake up I'll take another shot at tomorrow."

Henderson, of Lucknow, Ont., brought a country to its feet with his series-clinching goal in the eighth and final game of the '72 series in Moscow. He also scored the winning goals in the sixth and seventh games.

After retiring from hockey, Henderson became a motivational speaker.

Today's rumors around the NHL

Leafs eyeing top prospect

The Toronto Maple Leafs are trying to get some young talent after giving away their next two first round picks. So if the Vancouver Canucks offer up to prospect Cody Hodgson -- who may be unhappy in the Canucks organization -- the Leafs may jump at it, even it it costs them Tomas Kaberle.

We know Kaberle will be shopped in the offseason -- when his no-trade clause is on hold. But he could be dealt earlier, despite Leafs GM Brian Burke saying he won't ask Kaberle to waive his no-trade clause. The Hockey News' Ken Campebell writes, "Kaberle would have some control over his destiny by agreeing to a deal prior to the deadline, ensuring he would be going to a playoff-bound team with a good future rather than facing the uncertainty of being dealt to any one of the 28 other teams during the summer."

In a trade, the Toronto Star's Damien Cox says it will cost suitors the same thing it cost them last offseason: a top-six forward. Hodgson is a good prospect and, with perhaps another piece, the Leafs might part with Kaberle.

The Bruins might also be interested in Kaberle, as well as the Sharks. The Devils might get in on this too, hoping that GM Brian Burke was fibbing when he said he didn't plan to ask Kaberle to waive his no-trade clause.

Jagr to return to NHL for playoffs?

At halftime of the Belarus-Finland game, NBC analyst Jeremy Roenick said Jaromir Jagr could return to the NHL for the playoffs, Even Strength reports. Although Jagr's contract is up at the end of this season, this may be a long shot. Jagr's Omsk team will make the playoffs and the KHL playoffs don't end until late April. The NHL season ends April 12.

Still, Jagr is still eying an NHL comeback. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune's Michael Russo writes, "So while these Olympics are about getting a medal for Jagr, you can bet it's as much about auditioning for some NHL teams. Most are assuming that the Edmonton Oilers have the inside shot since they went after Jagr hard before he signed in the KHL. But if Jagr continues this tourney to show he's still got game, the Oilers may need to get in line."

One place he won't be going is Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Dave Molinari previously wrotes, "Jagr has a long history of wanting to be the dominant presence on his team; add him to a club built around the likes of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, and that simply wouldn't be the case."

Florida shopping many of its players

Florida Panthers GM Randy Sexton reportedly shopping several players, as he tries to blow up this team.

He has said no one is off-limits, and the latest name to surface is trade talks is Cory Stillman. The Buffalo Sabres might be interested, as well as a handful of other teams.

The other guys on the market are Rostislav Olesz, Radek Dvorak, Jordan Leopold and Dennis Seidenberg. Goalie Tomas Vokoun could also be dealt.

NY Rangers preparing a blockbuster trade?

The New York Rangers may be working on a blockbuster trade with the Edmonton Oilers in a deal that involves Sheldon Souray.

The Fourth Period reports that Rangers scout Rick Kehoe and former Minnesota Wild GM Doug Risebrough, a Rangers consultant, watched the Oilers play last week -- possibly eying Souray. The Rangers may also be interested in Andrew Cogliano.

Although Souray has a no-trade clause, he has is willing to waive it to go to New York, so that wouldn't be a problem. However, any trade involving Souray would have to include several players with big contracts, since Souray's cap hit is $5.4 million. The Rangers would love to rid themselves of Michal Rozsival ($5 million) or Wade Redden ($6.5 million) but it's unlikely the Oilers would take them off their hands in their rebuilding period. The Rangers may also shop F Brandon Dubinsky.

Mikael Grabovski, who was unable to play for Belarus due to a broken wrist, supposedly got into a bar fight in Vancouver during the early hours of the morning. Word around Vancouver is that he was taken into custody & released. Leafs management aren't happy & are investigating the alleged incident.

And here i thought he only fought with teammates. :D

if true, Burke will be shipping him out of Toronto in the off season,or by the deadline. no need for players like that on a Burke led team, again, IF TRUE and depending on the circumstances surrounding the incident..

Grabovski spends night in jail; eventually released in his parents' custody

VANCOUVER–This isn't how the Maple Leafs hoped Mikhail Grabovski would be spending his Olympic break.

The 26-year-old centre was arrested at 2:30 a.m. Saturday by Vancouver police and kept in jail overnight after allegedly being involved in a street altercation.

Grabovski was apparently released to his parents at about 9 a.m. Saturday.

Leafs GM Brian Burke said in a news release he was "aware" of the incident. "Since we are presently investigating this matter, the team will not provide any further comment at this time."

The details of the incident are unclear, but apparently an argument on the street escalated into a situation in which punches might have been thrown, possibly at least one by Grabovski. No charges had been laid as of late Saturday evening.

Grabovski has been out of the Leafs lineup since Jan. 2 with a fractured wrist and has not been able to play for Belarus in these Olympics. Apparently, however, he chose to join the small but energetic Belarusian cheering contingent. Belarus was beaten 4-2 by Sweden on Friday afternoon.

Grabovski is in the first year of a three-year, $8.7 million (U.S.) contract with the Leafs.

Earlier in the day, Burke said he has grown tired of hearing about all of the supposed problems at the "Glitch Games."

"I've been to four Winter Olympics," Burke said. "This is the best one I've been to in terms of organization. ... I think it's been extraordinarily well run. I wish people would quit bitching about it."
