Pens dump Habs to take commanding 3-1 lead in series

Really? Did they take a win away from the habs? It's 3-2, Doc, and that's hardly a 'commanding lead', it's exactly what you would expect if a team can hold on to their home ice advantage. It's also a sign of a series going to 7 games.

Doc's Sharks eliminate Cairo's Red Wings

CORRECTION: That should read: The Sharks eliminate Cairo's Red Wings (NOT 'Doc's Sharks"), since the leafs (NOT the Sharks!) are Holliday's team...and the woeful, stinkin' leafs succeeded in eliminating only themselves.

As I have said many times, Detroit is in a 2-3 year rebuilding phase and there was no plan to win the Cup this year (or even the next couple, for that matter). Considering this, the Wings did very well, making it to the final 8 and OUTSCORING the Sharks in the series.

Detroit was edged out by a goal in its losses and crushed the Sharks 7-1 in its win - but I notice our flip-flopping Holliday didn't bother cutting and pasting results for THAT game (either out of cowardice or ignorance - or maybe he was busy "hanging out" with lggy, watching his beloved figure skating tapes, or caddying for some of his favorite leafs as they enjoyed their SECOND consecutive month on the golf course).

SURE it did - you posted your usual error-filled bilge at 3:20 a.m. and edited it 12:48 p.m. shortly after Techman and GHG called you on it. Why is it that we're all reminded of your famous post about how "Sittler was finished when they shipped him off to Vancouver"?

Delete, edit, deny, and lie: the four trademarks of Holliday posting!

Hal Gill likely to miss game 6

MONTREAL - When your shutdown defenceman is checking a bag and not Sidney Crosby, there’s a problem.

Montreal Canadiens defenceman Hall Gill - the biggest reason the Pittsburgh Penguins captain remains without a goal in the Eastern Conference semifinal heading into Game 6 Monday night - was at the Pittsburgh Airport Sunday morning, getting down and dirty with the rest of the common folk and flying commercial.

Apparently his pay grade doesn’s warrant the private jet treatment teammate Andrei Markov received after injuring his knee after Game 1. Markov was hustled home after the game.

So there was Gill at the airport Sunday. When you’re 6-foot-7, it would be hard to travel incognito; even less so when you’re wearing a grey Montreal Canadiens t-shirt and track pants.

Gill was the airport with Canadiens team physician Dr. David Mulder - and not back in Montreal with his teammates who had chartered home after the game - because he sustained a cut to the back of his leg after he was stepped on by Penguins winger Chris Kunitz early in the third period of the Penguins 2-1 win in Game 5 Saturday night which gave the Pens a 3-2 series lead.

Gill’s status for his flight was confirmed, his place in the Canadiens lineup for their fourth win-or-play-golf elimination game of these playoffs much less so.

“I hope so,” he said when asked if he thought he could play Monday night. “It’s only a cut. We’ll see.”

Gill’s condor-like presence on the blue line, along with partner Josh Gorges, was a big reason why the Canadiens were able to eliminate the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Washington Capitals in seven games in the first round and come pretty close to battling the defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins to a near standstill in this series.

With or without Gill Monday night, the Canadiens will have to win to force a seventh and deciding game back in Pittsburgh Wednesday night.

There could be a saving grace for the Habs if Gill can’t play. Veteran defenceman Jaroslav Spacek, out since early in the first round with a virus that apparently left him with bouts of vertigo, is rumoured to have been cleared by the medical staff to play. Leaving him out of the lineup for Game 5 was the decision of Canadiens coach Jacques Martin.

Spacek skated at the club’s practice facility in Brossard, Que., Sunday and looks ready.

Then there’s Markov. As reported by QMI Agency, there was talk in the Habs camp before Game 5 that he might be able to play if a brace could be made ready for his knee, which sustained suspected ACL damage early in Game 1. A source close to the situation said a lot would depend on how Markov’s knee responded to the light skate he had in track suit Sunday. If the swelling was not prohibitive, playing is not out of the question, though his official status remains out indefinitely.

“It all depends on how it responds. If you can get the swelling out, you can tape it up. Everybody’s body is different. He wouldn’t be the first guy to play with a damaged ACL,” a source close to the situation told QMI Agency before Game 5.

The Canadiens found a way to win three times after they were down 3-1 to the Capitals, but the jittery Caps had no clue how to finish them off.

Crosby may be arguably the best player in the game today, but he's a poor loser!!! Great win by the habs tonight, fantastic winning goal by Lapierre and a typical poor sportsmanship display by 'Cindy' Crosby.

Bring on game 7!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coyotes inching closer to Winnipeg after talks between Ice Edge & city of Glendale break down

ICE EDGE BACKING AWAY FROM COYOTES UNLESS GIVEN EXCLUSIVITY

Ice Edge Holdings has informed the city of Glendale it will not continue discussions or negotiations to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes without an exclusivity agreement.

Ice Edge is backing away from the deal unless exclusivity is granted.

Glendale officials were given Monday as a deadline to produce an exclusivity agreement and failed to do so, even though sources say the city spoke to Ice Edge's bank on Monday to confirm this group's financial backing.

PEOPLE IN WINNIPEG ARE REJOICING AT THE NEWS !!

I guess you only listened to the commentators instead of watching the replay with your own two eyes. Crosby barely touched Plekanek. It was an overreaction on the part of Plekanec's teammates. It's also obvious that the commentators hadn't even seen the play & simply jumped to conclusions.

Ice Edge hopes for last-ditch breakthrough on Coyotes sale

Just when it looked as if Winnipeg was on the verge of getting their Jets back, hope suddenly sprang up in Glendale, Ariz., that Ice Edge Holdings had in fact not walked away from its deal.

“It ain't over until the last White Out,” said Daryl Jones, one of the Ice Edge investors, via his Twitter account at 12:11 a.m. Tuesday after a Monday evening of tweets that made it seem that hockey in the desert was doomed.

Earlier on Monday, Jones had tweeted that talks had broken off between the city of Glendale and a group of hockey-loving investors who were widely believed to be Glendale's last best hope of finding buyers willing to take a chance on keeping hockey in the desert.

“Talks have broken off for a number of reasons,” said Jones earlier, also via Twitter.

The status of another potential owner – Chicago sports baron Jerry Reinsdorf remained uncertain. Reinsdorf had won an exclusive negotiating window last month, but talks broke down recently with Glendale councillors reaching out to Ice Edge, whose proposal had been rejected a month ago.

Time is very short for Glendale to find an owner willing to take over a franchise that hasn't turned a profit since moving to the desert.

Meanwhile, the NHL has a window to move the team starting June 30 and is widely believed to have a back-up deal with Toronto-based billionaire David Thomson, who would have the team play in Winnipeg.

The league owns the team, having paid $140 million for it in bankruptcy court. It lost an estimated $20 million this season despite making the playoffs and was last in regular season attendance.

Arizona may guarantee $25 million for Coyotes

GLENDALE, Ariz. - The Glendale city council has guaranteed the NHL up to US$25 million to keep the Phoenix Coyotes in Jobing.com Arena for the 2010-2011 season.

But city manager Ed Beasley and NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly both told the council that the sale of the Coyotes is still expected to close by the end of June and the payments may never be needed.

Beasley also told the council on Tuesday that both Ice Edge Holdings - a group of Canadian and U.S. investors - and a group headed by Chicago sports mogul Jerry Reinsdorf are talking about buying the Phoenix Coyotes. Reports have had Reinsdorf's group dropping out in recent days.

The NHL purchased the team out of bankruptcy last September with the stated intention of selling it to a buyer who would keep the franchise in Arizona

(Hard to figure why anyone would want to buy or keep a franchise that hasn't made a single penny (and lost millions) since the first day it moved to the Phoenix area.)

Two huge hockey games tonight. I predict a Flyers win over Boston to take the series to a game 7.

As for the Habs/Pens game, i'll flip a coin. I have a feeling that if the Habs win, i'll feel exactly like i did back in 2004 when George Bush narrowly beat John Kerry in the US Presidential elections. I'm even considering cheering for the Habs tonight, hoping i might jinx them & they'll end up losing to Pittsburgh.

Oh well, at least the Jays beat Boston today......so the day started off on the right foot. :D

Today's rumors around the NHL (as reported by ESPN)

Kaberle to Canucks?

There's a good chance Tomas Kaberle is traded this offseason, and the Toronto Star's Damien Cox thinks the Vancouver Canucks might be a good fit. "[Vancouver's] blueline is thin, although [Alexander] Edler looks like a comer. You might wonder if a good puck handler like the very available Tomas Kaberle could benefit the 'Nucks."

Most think Kaberle would cost a first-rounder or a top-six forward, but Lance Hornsby of the QMI Agency says he'll only fetch a second-rounder.

It might be more likely that Leafs GM Brian Burke may look for a trade in which he can acquire an establish NHL player, since he continues to say how unreliable draft picks can be. That said, the Leafs really need a No. 1 center, and those types of players are obviously hard to find. (If only they still had their first-rounder this season, they could possibly net Tyler Seguin.)

There has been some buzz that the Leafs are looking into signing RFA Andrew Cogliano and hoping the Oilers don't match -- a discussion that started on CBC's Hockey Night In Canada. Cogliano is hardly a No. 1 center now, but some feel he still has the potential to be a top-six guy.

Will Halak cash in?

It seems likely that Jaroslav Halak is now the guy the Montreal, and Carey Price is on his way out -- especially if the Habs beat the Pens in their second Game 7 this playoffs.

But CyberPresse's Rejean Tremblay writes that the Habs aren't going to break the bank for him, because they can keep his market value down since he's a restricted free agent and they can match any offer that comes their way. In addition, Tramplay hints that the Halak/Price debate isn't over yet.

However, CBC's Elliotte Friedman previously wrote, "Jaroslav Halak will not re-sign there unless Montreal makes an obscene offer."

And if the Habs don't make an obscene offer, there's a chance another team will, which may cause riot in Montreal, especially if Halak leads them to a Stanley Cup and furthers his cult-hero status.

Of course, if Halak's demands are too high, the Habs could always trade Halak and go with Price. But if Halak goes somewhere else and dominates, new GM Pierre Gauthier's head could quickly end up on a platter.

Leafs eyeing Czech star

The Toronto Maple Leafs already brought in one international star in Finnish goalie Jussi Rynnas. But now there are reportedly after Czech center Roman Cervanka, a 24-year-old who is looking to make the NHL jump.

Cervanka played for the Czech Olympic team, and he'll play for the Czech at the world championships, after which he'll make a decision, the Toronto Star reports.

We previously heard Cervanka's name when Jaromir Jagr was thinking about coming to the Edmonton Oilers, and he reportedly wanted the Oilers to sign Cervanka as well. So it's possible the Oilers also have this center on their radar.

Cervanka has played in the Czech league his entire career. Last season, he had 73 points in 50 games.

Bettman hinting Winnipeg favorite to get Coyotes?

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman all but said that, if the NHL has to move the Phoenix Coyotes, they'll likely move them to WInnipeg.

Here's what he exactly told CBC, via Puck Daddy: "If we have to move a franchise, if we have to move the Coyotes, obviously there is an equitable fairness point to be made; if the team has to go somewhere, certainly the place it came from should be given strong consideration."

Now, Bettman is very careful to say that the NHL wants to keep the team in Phoenix. And he won't even acknowledge that everything is in place for the Coyotes to go to Winnipeg.

For now, Ice Edge has walked away from buying the Coyotes because they couldn't get exclusivity in negotiations. Jerry Reinsdorf is still in talks, but there is still some speculation that the more likely move will be out of town, likely to Winnipeg.

We were only down 3-2 this time but the result was the same. A Habs win over a supposedly superiour team. I was at the Bell Center tonight and let me tell you, I've been to rock shows that were lower volume! And watching the post game interviews, Crosby was still whining and crying, this time over his penalty at the beginning of the game. Well FUCK CROSBY!!! He's headed for home to cry on Mario's shoulder!!! Maybe he can join Ovetchkin for a couple of drinks and compare notes.

GO HABS GO!!! Bring on the Bruins or the Flyers! It doesn't matter which because we'll bury them too!!!

On a side note...the atmosphere at the Bell Centre was amazing tonight, the Alouette cheerleaders were there looking hot and the entire place was wall to wall babes everywhere we looked!

HAALAAAK!!!! ;) :)
