As long as Cody Hodgson’s name is involved as one of the guys coming to the most important hockey market in the world, do it BURKIE!!!!!!!

Today's rumors around the NHL (as reported by ESPN)

Kaberle to Canucks?

There's a good chance Tomas Kaberle is traded this offseason, and the Toronto Star's Damien Cox thinks the Vancouver Canucks might be a good fit. "[Vancouver's] blueline is thin, although [Alexander] Edler looks like a comer. You might wonder if a good puck handler like the very available Tomas Kaberle could benefit the 'Nucks.

Congratulations to the Habs. They were the best team on the ice tonight & came through when it counted the most. I must admit that it's becoming harder to cheer against them, considering how much adversity they've faced throughout the playoffs, yet still found a way to win. PK Subban keeps on impressing me. I'm starting to wonder if they won't decide to take a flyer on Markov after next season when he becomes a free agent. I'm also starting to think that they might wind up keeping both goaltenders for at least 1 season, then Halak will be 25 & able to hit the jackpot as a UFA. They might actually give him $5 million+ for one year in order to get him to stay. However, it likely means they'll lose Plekanec to free agency, unless they figure out a way to unload excess baggage. Don't be surprised if Hamrlik is sent to the minors next season in order to save his $5.5 million contract, thus permitting them to re-sign Plekanec & the goaltenders. And don't be surprised if they trade Andrei Markov at the end of the season if they get something good in return, which would also drop $$ from the cap space. I think Subban is ready to take over Markov's role on the offense. He's also not to shabby defensively.

Anyways, whether or not it'll be Boston or Philly, it will be a very good Eastern Conference final & i'm still watching hockey because of the Habs. If not for them, my interest in the playoffs would be nil.

I have a tough time believing the Leafs would want to deal with Vancouver, their arch-ennemy (management-wise). Once Edmonton gets rid of Sheldon Souray, they might be open to doing business with the Leafs in regards to Kaberle & possibly Andrew Cogliano. Team president Kevin Lowe & Brian Burke made peace at the Olympics and are talking again.

I wouldn't mind Ryan Kessler with the Leafs.....but i doubt Vancouver would want to part with him. But maybe they would considering their considerable holes on defence.

as i told you midway thru the season, Kessler would be a huge addition to the Leafs, and im sure Burke and Wilson both would love to have him, but i doubt the Canucks will part with him, and didnt they just resign him? Now on the other hand, Bobby Ryan from the Ducks would also fit well with the Leafs and Burke, who drafted him, and Ryan seems to be unhappy in Cali..... cant wait for draft day! ...

It's a total shocker that Montreal has knocked out the two teams which I thought were the best in hockey in consecutive rounds. It looks to me like 2 things have happened, (1) excellent goaltending by Halak, and (2) bringing up Subban because of the Spacek illness has infused the team with energy, enthusiasm and pride, and has also changed the chemistry of the defensive core of the team. Now they could end up playing Boston in the EC finals and it will be like the good old days when they played every year in the late 1970s.

Hundreds of Habs fan riot after game (Surprise-surprise!!)

MONTREAL -- Police regained control of the downtown core early Thursday after firing tear gas at hundreds of bottle-tossing youths who looted businesses following the Montreal Canadiens' Game 7 victory in Pittsburgh.

The vandalism occurred after most of the tens of thousands of jubilant hockey fans left the area.

Looters wrapped their faces in garments -- in some cases the ones they'd stolen -- and dashed into a liquor store. With their identities concealed, they leaped through the smashed front window and emerged moments later with their arms full.

One man warned his female friend to be careful with the loot.

"Hide the bottle," he snapped. "The police."

He was referring to the line of officers who watched impassively from the closest street corner. Their reinforcements were on the way.

Rows of black-clad riot officers charged in from the peripheries, rattling their shields as a warning to the crowd before firing tear-gas canisters. Police said about 25 people were arrested and two officers sustained minor injuries.

Shortly after the Canadiens' 5-2 victory over the Penguins, fireworks erupted over Ste-Catherine Street as people crowd-surfed and held aloft trinkets including Stanley Cup replicas and a stuffed penguin.

The flag-waving crowd was as euphoric as the 21,000 fans who crammed into the Bell Centre to watch the game on giant screens. After the game, they spilled out into the streets chanting, "We want the Cup! We want the Cup!

Montreal has a history of hockey-related violence.

Cars were burned and downtown stores were trashed and looted after the Canadiens beat Boston in the 2008 playoffs, and there also were riots after Montreal's Stanley Cup victories in 1986 and 1993. The most famous riot was in 1955 when Habs great Maurice Richard was suspended and fans took to the street to cause such havoc that Richard had to make a public appeal for calm.

(Meanwhile, the bankrupt Mtl economy has to pay millions of $$ to cover for the damages & overtime costs involved with policing.....with the poor Mtl taxpayers' dollars. Again!)

Allo Techman,
Merci - I fixed the post.

Hi Doc,

I've followed your posts and it's amazing to read the "dark side" if you will of the excitement caused by or that often accompanies these celebrations. What I find disturbing is that there are usually a few dozen common thugs and thieves who will start the trouble and looting for no other reason than that of personal gain. THis causes a few hundred "followers" to join in which in turn puts a city of millions (the vast majority 99.9999% of which did not participate) a bad light. It's sad.

That said the authorities should find a better way to deal with this ... it has become predictable and there are ways to deal with it.

Have fun,

Jman

Comon' lgna ... it's ok if you jump on the home team bandwagon for the rest of the playoffs buddy.
Forget about the Leafs for now...they have been warming up the golf course for the Pens...lol.

From todays USA Today:
Montreal was the worst of the 16 teams to make the NHL playoffs and, arguably, the least-likely to beat either NHL regular season champion Washington or Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh. Now, they've beaten both in Game 7s, after trailing Washington 3-1 and Pittsburgh 3-2.

From the AP:
Montreal, about the last team anyone would have picked to beat the top-seeded Capitals, much less the reigning NHL champion Penguins, accomplished what no team has done since the current playoffs format was adopted in 1994. And that's beat the Presidents' Trophy winner and Stanley Cup champion in successive rounds as an eighth-seeded team.

GO HABS GO!!!

You just gotta admire a team that can come back from a 3 - 1 deficit in a 7 game playoff series, don't ya EB?

I agree. CNN just mentionned something about last night's riot on their newscast, calling a 'clash between hockey fans & the police'. Disappointed.

What disappoints me even more is that for all the extra hundreds of cops being deployed each night the Habs play, they're being paid their wages in overtime & guess who's footing the bill? The bankrupt Montreal economy......through its overtaxed taxpayers. The cop car that was detroyed last night? Same thing. The taxpayers foot the bill. Very sad.

Tonight we're gonna party like it's nineteen-ninety........THREE!!

Hold on, mister 4 posts. They still have two more series to win before the BIG party. If it happens, that'll be the night that downtown Mtl will go down in flames. Just watch. They'll have to deploy the army out of Afghanistan!

On another note, Pierre-Karl Peladeau (Quebecor) has indicated this morning that he's after an NHL franchise for Quebec City. Great news!

Montreal Hockey Fans Riot?

Well all,

GO HABS GO!!! Bring on the Bruins or the Flyers! It doesn't matter which because we'll bury them too!!!

On a side note...the atmosphere at the Bell Centre was amazing tonight, the Alouette cheerleaders were there looking hot and the entire place was wall to wall babes everywhere we looked!

HAALAAAK!!!! ;) :)

The Bruins have not played very well all year. They won three games in a row, two very close; but since then, as Krejci went down and the Flyers regained a player (don't remember who), the balance of power has shifted. Like the Canadiens the Bruins are lucky to even be in the playoffs, and now the Bruins seem to have lost whatever edge they had at the start of this series.

It's an ugly trade-off, even if beneficial economically.

I've never been in a city at the moment of a playoff series victory, but I know how exciting it must be and I can't blame people for being so eager to celebrate. Still, tearing apart an area after every series victory is just nuts.

ish,

Merlot

Get over your jealousy, bitterness and frustration.

Do you really think these thugs are hockey fans? or give a shit about the Habs?

I guess they must be Maple Leafs fans, right?

By the way, smartass, i'm not jealous or anything. I'm simply reporting the facts as they happened. It wouldn't surprise me that someone with a low IQ such as yours (which has been proven dozens & dozens of times) was part of the riot. Heck, i wouldn't be surprised that your so offended by the article i posted because you actually might appear in one of the pictures? Were you one of the guys charged & having to appear in court?

Hockey hooligans appear in Montreal court

by Paul Cherry, The Gazette

MONTREAL - Despite claims from police that the people involved in Wednesday night’s hooliganism were not hockey fans, the first person to appear in Quebec court on charges sure resembled one.

Martin Daoust Vilard, 26, of Montreal, sported a black t-shirt with the Montreal Canadiens logo on the front when he appeared before Quebec Court Judge Jean-Paul Braun at the Montreal courthouse Thursday afternoon. Vilard, a fan of goaltender Jaroslav Halak judging by the white letters on the back of his t-shirt,
was ordered to be held in custody for a bail hearing on Friday. He faces one charge of aggravated assault stemming from the violence that broke out downtown after the Canadiens win advanced the team to the next round of the NHL playoffs.

The Crown objected to Daoust Vilard’s release because he has seven cocaine trafficking charges in another case pending at the same courthouse.

At least three other men are also scheduled to have bail hearings Friday morning on charges related to what transpired on Ste. Catherine St. W. Luis Yonathan Caisse, 22, of Montreal, and Travis Dewolf, 25, of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, are charged with assaulting police officers. Patrice Léveillé, 20, of Saint Eustache, is charged with aggravated assault on a woman. A fifth man, Abdul Wali Hasimi Mir, 18, was released after agreeing to a series of conditions. Besides being charged with aggravated assault on police officers, Hasimi Mir is also charged with being in possession of stolen shoes.

Two other people among the 41 people arrested by the Montreal police appeared in municipal court as well Thursday. Details on what charges they face were not available. Most of the 41 people arrested were released on a promise to appear in court at a later date. According to the Montreal police, six of the 41 were minors.

Those arrested face a variety of charges ranging from armed robbery, breaking and entering, assault and mischief.

Surprised to see someone from the good old U.S.of fucking A was involved in this.

Octavian, PLEASE tell me how you know that this person is from the USA? Is it because he's wearing a Yankees hat? I'll admit, Yankee fans are the 2nd worst in all of sports, behind the Habs fans or course, but if that's your theory then you're absolutely one of the stupidest people I've ever not met.
