Bruins GM claims coach's job is safe

Boston Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said Wednesday that despite the team's serious struggles, coach Claude Julien's job was not in jeopardy.

"I was asked this morning if his job was in jeopardy and my response was, 'No, it's never even entered my mind,'" Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli told ESPN.com. "We have to improve as a team, we have to improve as a management team, we have to improve as a coaching staff, and that's what we're going to do."

Boston, 10th in the Eastern Conference with a 23-20-8 record, is in the midst of a five-game losing streak and appears to be dropping out of the playoff picture. They've battled injuries to key players all season, and the team hasn't performed at the level of last year's team, which finished first in the conference and reached the second round of the playoffs.

Chiarelli suggested that everyone in the organization needed to improve their performances.

"I'm disappointed," Chiarelli said. "You look at the team, you look at going into the year, and obviously I expected to do much better. There's still 30 games left and we have to make hay with the sun shining right now. It's so tight in the standings that if you win 4-5 in a row, you're back in it. That's exactly what Ottawa [winners of seven straight] has done.

"It's incumbent on the players to play better, because they haven't played well enough," continued Chiarelli. "By the same token, it may be that we need some tweaks ... and the coaching staff has to get more out of the players. What I'm saying is, it's everybody's fault. Let's man up and get this thing right."

Speaking Tuesday on 98.5 The Sports Hub, Bruins vice president Cam Neely also dismissed talk of firing Julien right now. "I can understand why the fans are frustrated and may be calling for a coaching change," he said. "We still need time to evaluate the team."

Neely said a few victories and a dose of confidence could go a long way toward getting the team back on track.

Well, well.....Ms. Cairo being sarastic again!! Nothing changes! :D

I believe you meant "sarcastic". Oh well, anyone can make a typo.

Ironically however you bragged not too long ago about how you are "the king of sarcasm" so maybe you meant your post as a compliment. If so, I humbly thank you...but actually I was NOT being "sarastic" (sic) - I was sincerely complimenting you for realizing that Ken and Lou are the cream of the GM crop.

Oh and by the way, you really SHOULD try to correct your little problem about not being able to tell the boys from the girls. Coincidentally lg has the same problem. Hmm..that's food for thought.

Bruins' Chiarelli desperately trying to make a trade

Boston Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said Wednesday he is working the phones trying to make a deal ahead of the Feb. 12 Olympic roster freeze and the March 3 trade deadline.

"I'm looking every year [to make trades], but maybe more so this year because of the way we performed," said Chiarelli. "Having said all that, we want to be in the playoffs and we want to succeed in the playoffs."

The Bruins, who have lost five straight and currently sit one point out of a playoff spot, have plenty of ammunition at their disposal in trade talks. They have nine draft picks in the first two rounds over the next two years.

While Chiarelli refused to discuss any specific names, another NHL source told ESPN.com the Bruins are very much in the Ilya Kovalchuk sweepstakes along with Los Angeles, in particular. While Vancouver, Philadelphia and Chicago also have reported interest, it appears the Bruins and Kings are the front-runners at this point.

But will anyone pay the price? The Atlanta Thrashers reportedly are looking for a package that includes a first-round pick, a prospect and a player from their NHL roster.

Kovalchuk, who is among the NHL's leaders with 56 points in 46 games this season, is an unrestricted free agent July 1.

And once again, the Queen of Sacrasm is at it again! Ya da girl, you! Well done, Ms. Cairo! :D

I see you read my post and then edited yours to correct the typo. Well done!

Unfortunately I see you made another typo (or is it a typo - you seem to have trouble with this particular word and its derivatives) in your latest post. The word is "sarcasm", not "sacrasm". Oh well, can't win 'em all (as Leaf fans know very well!).

Meanwhile, your REAL problem - that little sexual confusion thing - persists. You know, the little difficulty you and lg share in being unable to tell the girls from the boys? Oh well, if it doesn't bother you or lg, I guess I shouldn't worry - I was just trying to be helpful by pointing it out to you in case you wanted to seek help. That's what friends are for. Best wishes!

Punchless Dead Things lose another one!

Guillaume Latendresse leads Wild over struggling Dead Things 5-2

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Antti Miettinen got Minnesota going with a pair of first-period goals, and Detroit's defense fell apart down the stretch in the Wild's 5-2 victory over the Red Wings on Wednesday night.

Josh Harding made the early scores hold up with 26 saves for Minnesota, which improved to 6-0-1 in its last seven home games. Detroit's 4-3 shootout victory last week is the only blemish.

Miettinen, who has 15 goals this season, had his third two-goal game in his last seven games.

Pavel Datsyuk had two goals in the first period himself for the Red Wings, who have found themselves in a real fight for a playoff spot for the first time in years.

They began the day in eighth place in the Western Conference, with the Wild now three points behind them.

Leafs kaput

It’s easy to argue that for the first time, ever, the Leafs are kaput with still more than one-third of a season to be played.

Even in their nightmarish years of the 1980s – a decade universally considered the worst in franchise history – the club often bumbled and staggered until the final days of the schedule before either slithering into the playoffs or being eliminated. This season provides a different narrative.

A freefall from opening night has rendered meaningless the final 29 games of the Maple Leafs’ schedule. Only arithmetic keeps them alive; common sense declares that rigor-mortis set in long ago.

The Leafs’ troglodyte line will never be the same.

Leafs' Mayers requests trade

Brisson added that Mayers is more concerned with playing for a winning organization than getting more ice time than he has in Toronto.

“I think winning is the most important thing,” Brisson said. “When the team wins and he plays less, he’s happy, he’s okay with it

Really, can you blame him for wanting out from a shit hole team like the Leafs?

Opening up cap space is part of the story, but not the entire story. The team will need a lot more than $1 million in freed cap space in order to re-sign any of the two goaltenders, who will likely sign for $4 million+ somewhere, if not with the Habs. I doubt they'll have money to re-sign Plekanec, since they need to save up in order to re-sign Markov after next season. I've heard Tomas Plekanec's agent is certain he'll get offers in the $6 million+ range for his client. If this is true, the Habs should do everything in their power to trade him & at least try to get a 2nd or 3rd rounder in return. They cannot afford to once again draft and develop players & then seeing them leave as free agents without getting anything in return.

I wouldn't be at all surprised that Plekanec is looking for 6M$ or more. 1M$ will help but I guess it may not be enough esp in light of the need to sign one goaltender. If they can't sign Plekanec then they definitely should try and trade him.

You learn something new every day. For example, until I read this article I never realized that Mayers and Exelby are the two most intelligent Leafs.

Today's rumors around the NHL

-Atlanta's asking price for Ilya Kovalchuk are deemed to high by many teams; Boston sources have indicated that the Trashers wanted Boston's #1 pick that they obtained from the Leafs in the Phil Kessel trade.

-Mike Ribeiro might be heading to the Leafs, according to sources.

-Mike Comrie might be headed to the Rangers.

-The Lightning might trade Vincent Lecavalier in order to improve its chances of selling the team; prospective owners are not interested in being stuck with a huge contract like Lecavalier's.

-Goalie Kari Lehtonen might be headed to Dallas.

-Sheldon Souray might be traded to Colorado, which was one of his teams on his short list of teams to be traded to.

-Dion Phaneuf might be headed to either NY, Boston or Atlanta, if the right deal can be made.

-JS Giguere will probably ask for a trade now that fellow goalie Jonas Hiller has re-signed with the team. Could Toronto be a destination where he could be reunited with Brian Burke & Francois Allaire?

Jonas Hiller agrees to 4-year contract extension with Ducks

The Anaheim Ducks have signed Jonas Hiller to a four-year contract extension, taking a top-flight goalie off this summer's free-agent market.

The deal is worth $18 million, a source told ESPN.com. The $4.5 million average salary is well above the $1.3 million Hiller is earning this year.

The 27-year-old Hiller, who will start in goal for Switzerland next month at the Vancouver Olympics, was slated to become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

Hiller is 21-15-2 this season with a 2.75 goals-against average and .916 save percentage. Last spring in the Stanley Cup playoffs, Hiller went 7-6 with a 2.23 GAA and .943 save percentage as the Ducks upset top-seeded San Jose in the first round and pushed eventual Cup finalist Detroit to seven games in the second round.

Hiller has a 54-37-4 career record with a 2.46 GAA and .919 save percentage. He was signed as a free agent by the Ducks from Europe in May 2007.

Senators fire goalies coach

The Ottawa Senators have just fired goalies coach Eli Wilson. The Senators have been one of the worse teams in the league (as bad as the Leafs & Oilers) over the past month or so & a lot of the blame goes to the goalies, especially Pascal Leclair, who's been yanked in the past 2 games.

This was Doc's observation on January 13. Today, January 30, a mere 17 days later, they are 8-0 in their last 8 and Doc has predicted a victory for them tonight over the habs. If Doc is right (which lggy is praying for) then it will be 9-0. Gee maybe Ottawa is NOT really "as bad as the Leafs & Oilers".

And, in fairness, Ottawa has indeed been doing badly but they have been crippled by injuries to their best players.

This was MY reply on January 13 to Doc's post about Ottawa being "as bad as the Leafs & Oilers". Gee I hate to brag, but maybe I was on the right track! Look at their record since Alfie and Spezza returned.
