Ugly deal for MTL. Mara is a very poor man's Hal Gill! Guess it was to plug a toughness element still missing after that brawl filled Bruins game last wk.

My guess is that the Habs felt they had nothing to lose by sending 5th-round pick to Anaheim. He won't cost them much since he only makes $750 000 & he's a free agent after this season. It's a good move by Gauthier.

I'm wondering when the Nucks will add some Dmen... their Dmen are dropping like flies. I've never seen a team lose some many defenseman during the course of a season - and they were carrying 8 NHL calibre D at the start of the season.

It'll be interesting to see what Vancouver does with practically no cap room at their disposal.

True. Same thing with the Philadelphia Flyers. A lot of people say they should try to obtain help at the goaltending position & add at least one defenceman. However, with just over $1.725 million in cap space to work with, they can't exactly go on a shopping spree unless they start moving out some bodies.

News flash... Kevin Bieksa gone for 4wks... Nucks are screwed! Vancouver D will be carried by Joe Glass himself - Sami Salo, wel, Ehrhoff is still there but how long before he gets hurt.

Actually reminds me of the early 2000 Blackhawks teams with players regularly getting hurt. You have to start to think there could be something else influencing the quantity of guys hitting the IR... bad trainers? Who knows.

No - bad move, bad! LOL
Seriously, Mara is slow - doesn't hit or shoot as much as he once did. Yes, cheap cap hit but coughs up the puck more than PK (recently). If MTL wanted toughness they should've brought in a real tough guy or physical agitator... Voros would've been nice, Neil too...

Maybe MTL will flip a D + picks to Vancouver for Raffi Torres... I'm allowed to dream!

Is he really that much worse than Hal Gill & Roman Hamrlik?

Doc, Mara is definitely worse than Gill because he can't clear the crease as well nor angle opposing fwds to the boards and he certainly isn't close to Hamrlik who's mr.All-round D-guy, Roman's overpaid but it would've gone to waste in a Souray contract if MTL didn't throw it at Hamrlik.

Kaberle's days of abuse in TO over!

So glad for Kaberle he got moved to Boston! Unfortunately Toronto will realize it's not easy to replace a PP QB at least not at under $5M.

Again, glad Burke is now doing the re-building thing properly. FINALLY!

As for that Ottawa/Colorado trade - guess both teams just wanted to move players to shake things up... at least that's how it comes off.

Lol, you must have been sleeping the last 2 plus years since Burke took over. Whats the proper way? Tank for years to get a top 3 draft pick for several years only to "wish" or "hope" that those "top" prospects will be the next Stamkos, Ovie or Crosby? Dont think so and Burke doesnt either. Today the Leafs got a top prospect from the bruins, but he is a TOP Prospect who's developement is a couple years into already, not a raw 18 year old who needs 3-4 years to develope, and this is what Burke has done with alot of the guys he has brought in here, as well as drafting kids who will take time to develope.

He has traded underachievers for the likes of Dion Phaneuf and Big Keith Aulie and pk specialist Freddie Sjostrom, as well as getting assets for a older and declining F Beauchemin, not to mention shedding salary and also doing the same for Versteeg and getting 2 more pics for him (Versteeg is not missed because Lupul stepped right in to help us, as did Aulie to help out the D) And i am sure someone will step up to help fill the void on our PP now that Kaberle is gone, it is not like the Leafs had a great PP anyways, but lets see if someone steps up. (btw, todays trade of Kabby for a first round pic and a true TOP prospect and a possible 2nd rd pic for a guy who most likely wont sign in Toronto July1 was pure Burke genius)

He has the Leafs 6 points out of a playoff spot with 24 games to go, still a shot this year but anyone who think the Leafs wont make the playoffs for several years, starting next season, and contend as well for many years are foolish. The farm is stocked with talent and will even get richer with all the picks the Leafs have coming for this years draft, the Leafs now have Millions of Cap room to go after any free agents they so choose.

Burke took this old team that had no sense of direction for years and were going nowhere fast, and turned it into a young, fast, exciting team that will only grow and get better as they mature, and he is NOT done yet. I would say as of this day, that what Burke has done to help this club is nothing short of miraculous. And the best part of all this is he is doing it HIS WAY! (and i for one cant wait to hear the silence from all his critics when he succeeds, i have been a supporter of his since day one and never have i questioned one of his moves, not even to keep Ron Wilson, but thats a whole nother story)
Again, glad Burke is now doing the re-building thing properly. FINALLY!.

Thats where your wrong my man, im a HUGE Burke fan as well. He was quoted last week of asking a fellow GM years ago when he was just getting started what to do if he signed a player that turned out to be a mistake? he was told by that gm a simple answer "Fix It".... which is what he did with Versteeg, Beauchemin also to a lesser degree.
Thanks Igna, you made my point!

See, difference is you're a Leafs fan and I'm a Burke fan. I can tell when the guy's F'ed up and back tracking.

ah, good we're apparently reading the same book n on the same pg. But if that's the case, the Beauchemin and Versteeg moves were/are an admission of making a mistake in the rebuilding plan. If Burke got it done right, Leafs would actually have a record above 500 no? and we're already into Yr3 of the Burke era! He hasn't been this slow to right the ship since his 1st GM gig in Hartford.

I do agree he's building a solid young foundation but the parent club has been stuck in neutral forever. I wanted to give the guy credit for Reimer, but look it up... James Reimer was a 2006 pick from the John Ferguson, Jr. As far as I can see, at the NHL level Burke's built himself an awesome Championship caliber AHL team! Even you must see that?

Mistakes happen in life and in business but i wouldnt really call versteeg and beauch big mistakes, he turned both into assets and we are in better shape today than 2 weeks ago, short term and long term. Now if only Komisarek can get his form back or be moved for assets, lol. If you watched Burkes Q & A with fans today, you would of seen him give credit and praise to jfj and fletcher for Reimer and Schenn.

Yeah, would be nice if Komie was movable but he's damaged goods with a big price tag and no better than a guy like Dipietro.

AP's approach with the Jays would be a half decent model for Burke at this point, unload the unnecessary big contracts (Kessel, Lupul, Giguere, even Bozak, Armstrong, Grabby) and transition with some affordable UFA vets + youngblood. True the Leafs have the luxury of a deep wallet, but the cash is wasted while Toronto figures out their game plan and changes direction...

SLIDING BACKWARDS
  • 2007-08 83pts end of JFJ regime, outta post-season by 11pts
  • 2008-09 81pts Burke's 1st Yr, missed post-season by 12pts
  • 2009-10 74pts Burke's 2nd Yr, missed post-season by 14pts
  • 2010-11 @ 57pts - trending towards 77pts
I'm not encouraged by Brian's approach to-date as the end of Yr3 nears. But I'm hopeful with Burke's latest moves and the play of Reimer, Schenn, Dion and Kullie!

Lol, look, Kessel is going nowhere, unless a unbelievable offer were made for him, the guy is 23 and will have 3 years in a row already scored over 30 per season, you dont find talent like that very ofton in todays NHL. Lupul has got new life in Toronto and lets give him a chance to see why he earned the contract he has, he is finally healthy now and looking good on a line with Kessel. Bozak is a UFA and if we ever get that true big #1 centre, Bozie would look great as the 3rd line centre at a cheap rate. Get rid of Grabo? Really??? lol... the same with Armstrong, he as well as Grabo have been 2 of our best players this year and the only thing with Army is he has been hurt, but he is a force when in the lineup. Jiggy will be gone at seasons end and free up $7 million. The only way i would trade Grabo would be for a unbelievable return, he is maturing into a very very good player and i think the sky's the limit for this guy and we would be sorry if we let him go, unless for big time talent.

Again, BB has stockpiled the farm, and put us in the best shape this orginization has been in, in years, and he is nowhere close to being done as far as he is concerned, be patient.

"From Doc Holliday"

"I totally agree with Iggy. Grabovski & Armstrong have been two of the top Leafs players this season. They're keepers & worth every penny they're making. Grabs has actually been a bargain this season. Well done, Mr. Fletcher!
As for Evilthings' remark that Komisarek is damaged goods, what exactly does he mean? Komisarek has been one of the healthiest Leafs players this season. If he's damaged goods, what does that make Andrei Markov?
Finally, i'd like to make a small correction in regards to Iggy's remark in regards to Tyler Bozak's status after this season. He will be RFA, UFA. Same with Clarke MacArthur. Brian Burke holds the leverage in his negotiations with these two fine players."

Your right Doc, i meant to say Bozak was a RFA not a UFA.... Komisarek actually is getting minutes again since Kaberle's departure and making the most of them, SO FAR :) What a difference the PK looks with Armstrong in the line up, all i ever hear is how overpaid he is for a thirdliner, but REAL Hockey fans know he does so much more for the team than "having" to score... he does all the intangibles a coach loves and every team would take Army in a second.

Gotta love Doc for trying to stir the Habs/Buds rivalry thing with me... Doc, I like both teams!

But you're right, Markov like any pro athlete with a bum knee is worst than damaged goods, they've clearly got 1 foot in the grave.

Komie is damaged because he's got a bum upper body and doesn't hit the way he once did... well, precisely before his infamous tilt with Lucic where he was manhandled. Komie's last healthy season he was Top10 in hits by D. This yr, he's lucky if he's inside the Top30 for D. Just not the same player Burke signed.

Hell... Doc should be happy now. His dream team won 3 positions since he drove his corvette on the 'autoban' :)

I think mister white corrola got a deserved break out of this !

Anyway... I'm fre*kin' glad Lapierre is with the Canucks cuze unless a miracle (for the Habs) this year... I hope Vancouver gets the cup !

This would shut the.... for the 'Beloved Canadian team'. :)

And we would maybe get a little show outside (like in 94')... Not to mention all the funny sh*t the Green men would bring to the game :)

Hope so JH Fan. Knowing MTL, there will be parade on Ste-Cat if the Nucks win the Cup... afterall, Luongo should've been a Hab and exHabs Higgins + Lapierre are still Canadiens Alumni. Canadiens, Canucks, same thing no?! LOL
