The Cash-man comes through yet again

http://tsn.ca/mlb/story/?id=303299

Great Fourth Starter added to the Rotation........ fifteen wins with atlanta and a 2.87 era, that era will go up pitching in the AL and in Yankee Stadium but he also has a much better offense to support him so look for that win total to go up but the main thing is that Vazquez is a innings eater and is the perfect fit for this team......... good job Brian Cashman......

Hmmm...maybe. Coming to the AL adds 1.00 to his era. Coming to the AL East maybe more...but it looks good on paper...;)

his era will most likely go even higher than that but as a fourth starter and with a great offense in front of him, he should be able to get the Yanks alot more production from that 4th spot than there was in 2009, barring any long term injuries

i look at it this way, he has to produce more than wang did last year, and that shouldnt be to hard with wangs one win all 2009...... great trade by Cashman, now with Melky gone, Damon will probably get signed

Equivalent to the Sox signing Penny last year. ;)

Vazquez has a lifetime ERA north of 4 and his last stint in NYC was a bust...time will tell....:D

Hard to guess what's going to happen here. One thing, however, is clear. In the wake of the Lackey signing, Cashman was acting out of desperation.

Ironically, Baseball Prospectus issued their list of the Yankees top 11 prospects. They have one 5 star prospect, one 4 star, and eight 3 star, not a particularly good system. They just traded their second best prospect for a pitcher who a) has had two good years out of the last 6 b) sucked under the lights of New York in his first go round. c) is a fly ball pitcher moving from a big pitcher's park to a launching pad.

I do agree with our ignarant friend that he's a fine fourth starter, but $11.5 M and half your farm system for a fourth starter is a mighty price to pay. This is the equivalent of Theo trading Casey Kelly for Nick Blackburn.

The rest of the deal is meaningless. Melky is a fourth outfielder, the rest is chaff.

As for the Yankees signing Damon, who knows. After this deal was made, Cashman made the comment that he still planned to come in under $200 M. Considering that he's now got $204.5 M tied up in 15 players, he's got quite a task in front of him.

Couldn't have said better myself my good man, also if Vasquez fails it's not a big deal, on the other hand if Lackey fails it will be a monumental disaster for the Red Sox.

Vazquez

Vazquez is a flyball pitcher but he also is a strikeout pitcher, placing second in the NL in Ks behind Lincecum last year. He has had 200 strikeouts or more in each of the last 3 seasons, which is an impressive mark of consistency. He also won 15 games and was the #2 starter for the Braves. So he is not exactly dog crap as a #4 starter. The Yankees learned last year that strikeout pitchers can make a defense look real good and also save wear and tear on the defense.

It's true that his first stopover with the Yankees was less than successful, overall. However, he pitched really well the 1st half of the 2004 season, made the 2004 AL All Star team, and looked like a steal coming over from the Expos, but then things went south on him big time in the second half that year, culminating in none other than Yankee WS hero Johnny Damon grand slamming him in the ALCS. I remember the Yankees being very high on him back in 2004, and being mystified by what happened to him in the second half that year. Then the Yankees traded him away to Arizona in the Randy Johnson deal, which I still think was one of the few really bad trades Cashman has made.

One thing I have to agree with Rumples on was the fact that the Yankees last year won a World Championship with an outfield defense that was possibly the worst ever for any World Champion in baseball history. They have upgraded that outfield already and obviously another move is coming as the Yankees need a left fielder.

He'll have trouble reaching that mark again with Granderson on the Yankees.

The other question is whether or not Javier "Ed Whitson" Vazquez has the emotional makeup to pitch in the Bronx.

Hola Rumples...

I remember stories of people waiting for Ed after bad outings and following him home on the Palisades Parkway, giving him the finger, and yelling at him

He didn't last long

Longer than Britt Burns though...LOL

You asked the same question about A.J. Burnett last year, and the answer was one you did not like or expect. I suspect that the Yankees have an idea of what the answer is with Vazquez because they already had him for a full year. I cannot remember what the theories were at the time but he was great first half of 2004 and looked like he was on his way to 20 wins, and then awful second half. He is a seasoned veteran now. As a #4 starter expectations will not be high. He should be able to win at least 13 games, one would think.

Yeah, but there is something about failing on that big stage and then returning to the big stage to fail again.:eek: Should be interesting. I question the wisdom of bringing a "flyball pitcher" into the Bronx sandlot launching pad...:D

Also let us not forget he was pitching in the NL aka Norunsscored league...;)

quite the contrary, it seems Theo was acting this way by signing Lackey in the first place..... very desperate indeed, besides the Yanks already have their top 3 , now 4 starters set, and word on 66 WFAN NY today is that Hughes will be penciled in to start the season as the 5th starter.... a 3 man rotaion and "fill in's" won the World Series this Year, and now that rotation has just got stronger. is it april yet?

Igna69xxx,

This is a great point, The Yankees got away with a 3 man rotation in winning a World Series. Of all 15 postseason starts, I believe that only one was non quality, when Burnett got raked on 3 days rest in the World Series. All 14 other postseason starts were quality starts. It's amazing when you think about it, but the Yankees top 3 starters came through big fucking time (BFT) with good starts in 14 out of 15 games against the best competition MLB has to offer.

Now the Yankees can go with a more traditional 4 man postseason rotation. From what I read reported by Mark Feinsand of the NY Daily News, Vazquez pitched with a hurt shoulder in the second half 2004. Cashman did not want to trade him, but was ordered to do so by George Steinbrenner who did not want him back after he gave up the homer to Johnny Demon in the 2004 ALCS. Steinbrenner traditionally impulsively deposed players he deemed responsible for postseason losses. Cashman liked Vazquez then and now, but the difference is Cashman is now calling the shots on the deals, not George, who is in a semi-vegetative state and no longer is involved in the running of the team. The Vazquez/Randy Johnson trade was classic Steinbrenner impulsiveness. Cashman did the deal, but he had Steinbrenner's gun to his head when he did it.

Not yet, but after I heard of the Vazquez trade I immediately placed a call to my cable carrier and bought my baseball package for next year, that's how excited I am, great trade by Cashman.
