The Substance (2024)
This may be the best movie I’ve seen all year. The movie is about a fading celebrity who decides to go ahead & take a black market drug whose purpose is to temporarily create a younger & better version of yourself. I’m not going to add more to the plot since i might risk ruining the movie for you if you haven’t seen it already.

Directed by Coralie Fargeat & starring Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley & Dennis Quaid the movie is billed as an horror/sci-fi filled with nudity & gore. If i didn’t know better i’d swear that it was directed by either David Cronenberg or his son Brandon. Some scenes kind of reminded me of some of my all-time favorite movies like Alien, The Thing & Carrie. The movie received high praise at various movie festivals around the world & from movie critics. Some even suggested it could be Demi Moore’s best performance ever although i’m partial to her performance in G.I. Jane.

For those who don’t know the beautiful Margaret Qualley is actress Andie McDowell’s daughter. I remember seeing her in the fantastic Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She played the part of the Manson girl who hitchikes a ride from the Brad Pitt character & offers to suck his cock. Her performance in the movie is brilliant & her best role yet! Dennis Quaid has a supporting role in this movie & plays one of those shady tv producers. He’s very good in this role! The movie was written & co-produced by the director Ms. Fargeat. Is she the next Quentin Tarentino? Or is she the next Cronenberg? The movie is 2 hrs & 20 minutes & it’s an American, French & British collaboration. It’s the type of horror/sci-fi movie that you’ll likely remember for years & may one day end up among the classic films of the horror/sci-fi genre. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! 5 out of 5 stars!
Totally agree, it's one of the movies of the year, if not THE movie of the year.
The comparison to Cronenberg's work is totally accurate so it's not for everyone. :)
If you haven't already check her previous movie "Revenge", it'S also quite impressive.

Yesterday i watched The Order, i was expecting a lot from this movie and was unfortunately very disappointed, plot is interesting and photography is quite beautiful but the whole story development makes no sense and is very predictable.
i read a comment saying "Jude Law has great time acting, the audience, not so much" and that pretty much sums it up

Funny you mention that movie. It was one movie that i was contemplating to watch the other day but decided to wait. Now you got me curious so i’ll try to watch it this week.

Red Rooms (2023)
This is a great french-Canadian movie filmed in Montreal that is also called Les Chambres Rouges in french. I recently heard so many good comments about this movie that i finally decided to watch it & watched it in french. All i knew about it was that it was a psychologist thriller about a young woman obsessed about a trial. However that totally didn’t tell the entire plotline & it’s probably a good thing that i didn’t know much about the movie before i decided to watch it last night.

Basically the story is about a young Montreal model who decides to attend the trial of some guy accused of murdering three teenage girls & making a snuff film of their murders & then putting it on the dark web. So the minute i staryed watching the movie i said “great, another court trial movie. I love those.” But it turns out that it’s much more than this & really about the main character which as the movie goes along makes you wonder why she’s so invested into the trial & whether or not she’s a good person or not. The movie really starts getting suspensful & gets you on the edge of your seat in the second half of the movie as you ‘re trying to figure out what will come next. You actually end up not giving a damn about the trial & realize it’s not even a court trial at all. It’s about the main character & all the mysteries surrounding her!

It’s directed by Pascal Plante & stars Juliette Gariepy in a breakthrough performance! That movie is so good that it may now be actually the best movie i’ve seen all year after claiming yesterday that it was The Substance! I plan on re-watching the movie again & i’ll probably enjoy it as much! The critics & movie fans absolutely loved this movie & Gariepy’s performance & so did I! I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars and strongly recommend it!

Revenge (2017)
Well i took your advice & just finished watching Revenge. OMG what a great movie! I’m surprised that i hadn’t heard of this movie previously. I think i found my new favorite movie director! I’d even go as far to,say that this movie is Tarantinoesque! The beauty, the craziness, the extreme violence, the blood, the gore…you name it!

Director Coralie Fargeat definitely has a fascination with beautiful, sexy young lead actresses & doesn’t hesitate to showmthe viewer their physical attributes & beautiful nude bodies & gorgeous asses! In her more recent movie it was Margaret Qualley & in this one it’s Matilda Lutz, who portrays a woman who was brutally raped & then left for dead by her lover & his two accomplices. I loved all of their performances & especially the beautiful cinematography. The director also seems to have a fascination for gore & especially close-ups of gross, open wounds like in The Substance. I also loved the movie’s film score, which like the other movie greatly adds to the suspense. This is a great movie which was praised by the critics & tremendously loved by the moviegoers when it first came out. I absolutely loved it! I give it 4 out of 5 stars!

I watched Becky the other day on Netflix....an adult version of " Home Alone ". Lots of violence and gore.....you gotta suspend your disbelief...if you think that a 16 year old girl can take on a gang of dangerous escaped convicts....but hey I thought it was a hoot and a lot of fun. She must be John Wick's long lost cousin cause blood dosen't seem to faze her. It stars Kevin James from " The King of Queens " as one of the convicts....pretty convincing as a heavy. There are two movies..."Becky" and " Wrath of Becky ".I suggest watching Becky first as the other one is a sequel.

The Dead Don’t Hurt (2023)
I love a good western so i figured i’d watch this one which was directed by & stars Viggo Mortensen. The movie received very good reviews by the critics & moviegoers. It’s what i’d describe as being a smart western & it involves frequent switching back between two timelines. The present & the past. It co-stars Vicky Krieps & Solly Mcloud. Although it’s a slow-moving movie i enjoyed it. It involves love, rape & revenge. I give it 3 out of 5 stars.

Hit Man (2024)
Watched this movie yesterday & loved it tremendously. Very good acting performances by all of the actors especially main actor Glen Powell. Adria Arjona is also great & very sexy as the female lead. Very good script. Now i know why the fans & critics alike have been raving about this movie. I absolute loved it! I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

A bit out of topic maybe but it could interest some of you
There's a huge community of Star Wars online who didn't like the latest versions of the original trilogy and decided to hunt for original 35 mm copies of the 1st three movies all over the world to create new HD versions of those.
It's not for everyone since picture quality is often inferior to the latest 4k versions but the movies were not modified so they are the closest versions to what was available in theaters in 1977/1980 and 1983.
I can't obviously post links to this forum in here but if you're interested PM me.

I’ve never been much of a Star Wars fan. As a matter of fact i’ve only seen the first movie. I own the first 4 movies in blue ray yet have never even opened them yet. One day i will. Anyways when i was a kid i used to own my own Super 8 movie camera & projector. I sometimes would make my own movies with friends of mine. I remember even doing a remake of Rocky! Lol. Anyways i also began purchasing several Super 8 movies & one of them was Star Wars. It was actually how i ended up watching Star Wars for the first time. I still have all my Super 8 movies.

Yesterday i (re)watched Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, so yeah it's not particularly new but i had a different perspective on this one.
The first time i watched it was on the 1st release in 2001 and i was interested but i had mixed feelings about it, i was living in France at the time and i wasn't particularly affected by Jeunet's vision of Paris.
Jeunet directed this movie after his "US periode" when he went to Hollywood to direct "Alien Resurrection" and then came back to France, so his vision of the city was full of nostalgia and i didn't really get that at the time.
Now that i live in Montreal and that i'm older probably watching this movie affects me in a different way.
