Incendies (2010)
Incendies is a Canadian movie directed by Montreal's Denis Villeneuve. It stars Lubna Azabal as Nawal Marwan, the movie's main character. Co-starring Melissa Desormeaux-Poulin, Maxim Gaudette & the always wonderful Remy Girard, the movie begins with the reading of a mother's final will where her two children are each given a letter, asking them to locate their missing father (whom they had believed to be dead) and brother (which they didn't know about) and each give them a letter. In order to do so, they must travel to the middle east & retrace their mother's life, discovering that their mother was not what they had imagined her to be.
This movie is a masterpiece. A filmaking tour-de-force on the part of Denis Villeneuve, whose best known movies were Maelstrom (2000) & Polytechnique (2009). Those who've seen Polytechnique will recognize actor Maxim Gaudette as the mass murderer.
Nawal's story begins somewhere in the middle east (possibly Lebanon) where her brothers catch her with her boyfriend, a muslim. Since she's a christian, it's considered shameful for her to associate herself with a muslim who also happens to be a refugee. They shoot her boyfriend & then just as they're about to kill her in order to preserve the family honor, her life is spared by her grandmother. She tells her grandmother that she's pregnant & later delivers a baby boy, who immediately is taken away & sent to an orphanage. However, her grandmother tatoos one of his heels just after he is born, in order for Nawal to find her son later in life. Nawal vows to find her son one day & her story is about her journey & many struggles over the years in trying to locate her orphan son.
Her daughter travels to the middle east in order to discover her mother's past & when things begin to get entangled, she asks her brother to come & join her. Remy Girard plays the family lawyer, who was also a friend of the family & employed Nawal. We learn at the beginning of the movie that one day, Nawal suddenly stopped speaking. We are led to believe that she had a stroke & spent her final days/years in a hospital, only speaking once to her friend & lawyer, requesting him to write the letters for her.
The movie switches back and forth between the past & present, and it is beautifully done. The movie continues to entertain & maintain our interest as the plot moves along, and i must admit that this movie had one of the best finishes i'd ever seen in recent years. I absolutely loved this movie & it's probably the best movie i've seen all year, surpassing even "The King's Speech" and "The Kids Are Alright." I watched the movie in blueray & the cinematography was marvelous! I enjoyed watching the documentary that was made during the movie's filming, which is available as one of the extras on the blueray disc.

Ironic that you mention it. I bought the dvd two weeks ago, but have yet to view it. Now i can't wait to watch it!

Hangover Part 2 is stupid and not funny, the first one was stupid and funny. Mel Gibson gets the last laugh for not being in it.

I watched Super 8 & The Hangover II last week.
I loved the both of them! I didn't know what to expect when i saw 'Super 8' since i hadn't seen the previews. However, anything made by JJ Abrams has to be good, right? And it was!
As for The Hangover II, i wasn't sure how much i'd like it after having seen the first one (and loved it!). It took a while for the movie to get me interested, but by the the halfway point, i was laughing so hard at times that people around me gave me dirty looks at times.
Both very different, but very good movies......i'd watch them again!
By the way, am i the only one who's tremendously disappointed with the final season of Entourage? Man! The first season or two were so damn good!

I went with a group to Horrible Bosses and I didn't really care for it either. Everyone else loved it. First of all they shouldn't of used Jennifer Aniston as the boss trying to extort sex out of her male employee. I mean come on - I wasn't buying this. Who wouldn't fuck the hell out of her? I would let her cut my salary 20% If I could fuck her on a quarterly basis. what bull shit.
See Pinapple Express or Forgetting Sarah Marshall instead. I willl check out Bad Teacher and the Baby Sitter and report back.

For X-Mas I received as a gift a DVD movie 4-pack of some of Alfred Hitchcock's earlier black-and-white films (someone really likes me!
). Included among them is the stellar STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, SUSPICION with Cary Grant, The WRONG MAN with Henry Fonda.
The fourth one was a film I'd never heard of before, I CONFESS with Montgomery Clift. What was especially of interest was that in the opening sequence it is revealed through various street signs that the story takes place and was partially shot in Quebec City!! Hitchcock shot one of his films in Quebec City in 1953, and me being a rabid film buff did not know that!?!
The story is about a priest in Quebec City (expect a few exterior shots of Quebec churches--LOL!) who is told of a murder during a confessional and the ensuing dilemna...

I love classic movies! I'll make sure to watch Strangers on a Train, The Wrong Man & I Confess. I already own Suspicion. I'm a big fan of Cary Grant's movies.
I've had to find ways to kill time over the past two weeks. So, i decided to watch some movies through my new Netflix account.
The first movie that i watched was a foreign movie. I love foreign movies when they're very good! I came upon one that i had never heard of before, called "Winter in Wartime". I love WWII movies! This movie was made in 2008 & it's from the Netherlands. It's the story of a 14-year old boy who comes to the aid of a doomed British solider near the end of WWII. The cast & director were unknown to me & the movie gathered many awards & nominations throughout the world, including a nomination for best foreign film at the Oscars.
The second & third movies that i watched last week were "Paranormal Activity 2" & "Paranorma Activity 3". I had seen the first one a few months ago & liked it. I'm not a big fan of sequels, so i didn't bother watching this one until now. I heard good things about Paranormal 3 when it was released a few months ago, so i figured i might as well watch the second installement before watching the third one. To be honest, i really loved Paranormal 2. I even found it superior to the third one, which i watched a couple of days ago. All three movies, as you well know, involved people haunted by demons. I didn't realize until i watched Paranormal 3 that the characters appear in all three movies. Very well done movies! People who've enjoyed 'The Blair Witch Project' will like these movies.
Two days ago, i decided to watch one of the many blu ray movies that i purchased some time ago but hadn't yet had the chance to watch them. I had heard good things about an unknown movie called "Black Book" on this very site. It's a movie about WWII & deals with the holocaust & the resistance, favorite topics of mine. Black Book was made in 2006. It's from the Netherlands & directed by the well-known Paul Verhoven, who also directed 'Basic Instint', 'Total Recall', 'Showgirls' and 'Hollow Man'. The movie is about a Jewish singer infiltrates the regional Gestapo headquarters for the Dutch resistance during WWII in Nazi-occupied Netherlands. It stars Carice van Houten in the lead role and co-stars Sebastian Koch, whom i've seen in several movies before. It won many international awards & was also nominated for best foreign film at that year's Oscars. Great movie!
And finally, I was switching channels yesterday afternoon trying to find something to watch. I saw that the series "The Walking Dead" was playing on AMC. I also noticed that they were showing the entire first season throughout the day. What i was watching appeared to be very good, and i then realized that i was watching the first minutes of the pilot episode. I wound up watching the entire movie, and then the next one, and the next, and the next.....what a great series! I never thought i'd get hooked on a tv series dealing with zombies, but this one was highly praised by critics & fans alike and now i know why! I still have about six episodes left to watch.....recorded some of them, and will watch the ones i didn't record via Netflix.

I'm very glad you enjoyed the "Black Book". I think it could be a great "gateway" film to unlock some truly great foreign films. Saw another great WWII Battle of the Bulge film (yes, I know it's been done over and over and over), but Everyman's War http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1209319/ is less about war and more about war's sad realities. If you throw out the embarrassingly fake tank scenes, this period peace is remarkable in what it accomplishes on a shoestring budget. Not as good as Black Book, but it deserves to be mentioned in the same paragraph. You have to be ready for camerawork that's more reality than cinematic.

Hope you like the 3 movies. Be forewarned, don't expect the ''Master of Suspense'' Hitchcock when you'll see I CONFESS, The WRONG MAN and SUSPICION. The filmmaker who made REAR WINDOW, THE BIRDS and PSYCHO was still a few years from blossoming into the master. These three films are more crime dramas, with STRANGERS ON A TRAIN closer to the suspense thriller label.

Unfortunately, Hitchcock felt a double sting from this movie. It was one of his least-favorably received by international critics (which might explain why I'd never really heard of it), and he was enraged at the premiere night in Quebec when he discovered the Quebec censor board had chopped out what they considered inappropriate material, no doubt a pre-emptive measure to appease the incredibly-stifling Quebec clergy of the time:

I watched this movie during the holidays, upon the recommendation of a friend. Even though he was aware that i'm not much of a UFC/MMA fan, he was certain i'd love this movie. So, i reluctantly decided to see it & 'Warrior' probably was one of the best movies i've seen all year!
Haunted by a tragic past, ex-Marine Tommy Conlon (Hardy) returns home for the first time in fourteen years to enlist the help of his father (Nick Nolte) to train for SPARTA, the biggest winner-takes-all event in mixed martial arts history. A former wrestling prodigy, Tommy blazes a path toward the championship while his brother, Brendan (Edgerton), an ex-fighter-turned teacher, returns to the ring in a desperate bid to save his family from financial ruin. But when Brendan's unlikely, underdog rise sets him on a collision course with the unstoppable Tommy, the two brothers must finally confront each other and the forces that pulled them apart, facing off in the most soaring, soul stirring, and unforgettable climax that must be seen to be believed.
The movie stars Tom Hardy, Nick Nolte & Joel Edgerton. It was directed by Gavin O'Connor. Do not be surprised to see nominations come out of this movie for the upcoming Golden Globes & Academy Awards. It's a very powerful & moving story & i absolutely loved it!

Whoa!! Easy there, pal. The master was the master decades before Rear Window. Have you seen THE 39 STEPS? THE LADY VANISHES? Both masterpieces.
Have you seen NORTH BY NORTHWEST, Doc? An absolute gem. Cary Grant. James Mason. Eva Marie-Saint was absolutely gorgeous. One of Hitchcock's very best.
I've seen both, as well as Saboteur, the Skin Game, Rich and Strange, Rebecca, Spellbound, Dial M for Murder and many, many more of Hitch's films. While those films I like, I still stand by my opinion that he finally brought his A game starting with VERTIGO in 1958 (mind you, his C-Game is most other current filmmakers' magnum opus...
