What is the best recent movie you’ve seen.

I'm not a movie goer, with few exceptions. When I see that a novel I have read has been made into a movie, I'm generally interested. I tend to stick with the crime fiction/detective/mystery genre. On an Air Canada flight today, I saw the Lincoln Lawyer starring Matthew McConaughey as lawyer Mickey Haller. Haller is a Los Angeles lawyer who uses his two Lincoln Continentals as his office. There have been several of Michael Connelly's novels made into movies and each have been done very well. I recommend this movie if you like this genre of movie.

THERE BE DRAGONS - Set during the Spanish Civil War with a heavy dose of Catholicism, this film couldn't grab my attention during the first fifteen minutes. I've enjoyed films with interplay of Catholicism and the Humanist Movement. I won't rate it as I'm sure the film will appeal to many........

you know you're old when you can appreciate Larry Crowne.

you also know you're old ... but that you're not a chick when you can't get into One Day... which is a terrible movie to be forced to watch because the girl you're with has read the book and insists it's the best movie ever but guarantees hot sex immediately after. the plot spans 30+ yrs and i swear it felt like it played out in real-time!

Watch a new series on tube via Hulu called Alcatraz ( http://www.fox.com/programming/shows/?sh=alcatraz ) this evening. Interesting premise with lots of possibilities. Quality of production (and reproduction) seems pretty good. Set both in the present and in the late 50's/60's, this one's another of those time paradox shows.

Saw the new film "The Artist", as it received a number of academy award nominations. Its about a 1920s era silent film star who sees the end of his career unfold as he can't make the transistion to "talkies". I thought it was an interesting film and well directed, but in the end being made as a black and white silent film itself seemed a little "gimicky". It's a worthwhile film to see, but I'm not sure it's worthy of the academy award for best picture.

Contraband with Mark Wahlburg

Longhairs that like to watch critically acclaimed foreign movies with sub titles about the coming of age of two young lesbians please move on. Contraband is not for you.

Yes, Contraband is another Hollywood action film that couldn't possibly happen in real life. I had no expectations going into the theater and in the first 10 minutes I thought "Here we go again." Thankfully there turned out to be a few interesting twists that made Contraband a little different than some of the other overdone Hollywood action flicks that have been released in the past 10-20 years.

Whalburg plays John Bryce, a retired smuggler that has started a security service. His brother in-law is about to get nailed for smuggling cocaine and he drops the drugs overboard. The drug kingpin in the US wants to be reimbursed or he will kill the in-law and make Bryce responsible for the debt. Bryce agrees to come out of retirement for one more run.


I give it 7.5 to 8 out of 10 stars.

The Iron Lady (2011)

This movie stars the great American actress Meryl Streep in the role of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

The Iron Lady is a surprising and intimate portrait of Margaret Thatcher, the first and only female Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. One of the 20th century's most famous and influential women, Thatcher came from nowhere to smash through barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male dominated world.

The movie deals with her battle with dementia after she left office, and the damage her career caused on her family. It begins in 2008, where we seen an elderly Margaret Thatcher buying something in a convenience store, and we are then taken to many flashbacks of her life throughout the movie.

Streep's performance was masterful & she may deservably win the best actress Oscar at the upcoming Academy Awards. As for the movie itself, it can get confusing at times since there is a lot of 'back and forth' and she spends nearly the entire movie speaking with her dead husband, which she is imagining due to her dementia.

We are taken from her first election to parliament, on to her nomination as leader of the Conservative party, and then her ascension to the Prime Minister's office. Her various political battles follow, her unpopularity among the British, and then her decision to go to war against Argentina in the Falklands. It appeared that she then became very popular among her people once Great Britain won the Falklands War & then became a respected world figure along the likes of Ronald Reagan, among others.

We also see her downfall, led by her transformation to a near-autocrat, eventually becoming near-impossible for her cabinet to deal with at times where she'd regularly humiliate some of her colleagues, which led to her eventual resignation.

Even though i was never a huge fan of Margaret Thatcher's, i found the movie to be quite interesting & the two hours it took to watch it flew by quite well.

My rating: 3 stars out of 5.

Has anyone here mentioned the movie Shame? (a movie about sex addiction).
I think it received some good reviews, but overall...mixed reviews because of the subject-matter maybe?
Wondering if I should add this movie to my list of movies to see. Anyone here seen it?

I've seen SHANE, but never SHAME. SHANE remains one of my all-time favorite movies. It stars Alan Ladd, Brandon Dewilde & Van Hefflen. Jack Palance made his acting debut in that movie. An absolute classic!

I'll watch it again one of these days & post a review afterwards.

J. Edgar (2011)

J. Edgar is a 2011 American biographical drama film directed by Clint Eastwood & stars Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role. The film focuses on the career of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover from the Palmer Raids onwards, including an examination of his private life as an alleged closeted homosexual.

As the face of law enforcement in America for almost 50 years, J. Edgar Hoover was feared and admired, reviled and revered. But behind closed doors, he held secrets that would have destroyed his image, his career and his life.

I found the film a bit long at 137 minutes. It was also the type of movie that i won't care to watch again. Why? Probably because i disliked the main character & he didn't do much to be liked. I'll admit that J. Edgar Hoover made his mark in American law enforcement history. He also used (abused?) his office in order to spy on & harrass politicians & cultural icons (e.g. Martin Luther King Jr.) that he despised.

He was a miserable & mean person on many occasions, and was very eccentric. As mentionned, he was director of the FBI for forty-some years and that's the reason why today the person heading the FBI only does it for a 10-year term, although there could be exceptions.

As the decades roll by, we see Hoover & his involvement with several 'famous' investigations. One of them is the infamous "Lindberg Kidnapping Case", where American hero Charles Lindbergh had his young infant son kidnapped, only to be found death some time later. Way too much time in the movie was spent on this particular case, in my opinion. After a while, i was wondering if this was a movie about J. Edgar Hoover or a movie (another one!) about the Lindbergh kidnapping. I mean, most of us already know the story quite well & saw it re-told in several movies. Enough!

It was a very good performance (as usual) by Leonardo DiCaprio & the make-up to age him was done very well. It's interesting to note that we will never know what his 'secret FBI files' contained, since his long-time secretary, played by Naomi Watts, destroyed them immediately after his death.

I give the movie 3 stars out of 5.

The Grey (2012)

This movie stars Liam Neeson and it's an outdoor survival movie in Alaska. After a plane crash, a stranded oil drilling team struggle to survive in the wild. Battling mortal injuries and merciless weather, the survivors have only a few days to escape the icy elements - and a vicious pack of rogue wolves on the hunt - before their time runs out.

I decided to see this movie because i'm a huge Liam Neeson fan, having enjoyed him in movies such as Rob Roy, Schindler's List, Michael Collins, Chloe, Taken & Unknown, among others.

I generally enjoyed the movie for the most part. However, i kind of found it somewhat long, being just under 2 hours in length. For some reason, it felt longer. There are some terrifying/suspenseful moments, the one or two annoying guys in the group that you can't stand & hope the wolves would have them for dinner, and of course, the 'survivors' being taken down one by one by their predators.

You could say that this movie is part 'The Thing', part 'Jaws', part 'The Edge', part 'The Survivors'. However, i was left somewhat disappointed with the movie, especially how the movie concluded.

I give it 3 stars out of 5.

Casino Royale 2006

I finally saw this movie on Netflix last night. I was very impressed. I though it was a very well done, well acted film that did not lag despite its length (2:24). In the first third of the movie, although I was aware that Daniel Craig was playing Bond as originally written in the earlier Ian Fleming novels as a ruthless and coldblooded killing machine, I thought it was kind of a one note performance. But the second half of the movie changed all of that as Craig humanized the killing machine. Very solid job by Daniel Craig playing Bond in this movie, especially at conveying a sense of moral outrage and repulsion towards the bad guys. There was tremendous chemistry between Craig and Eva Green who did an amazing job pulling off a British accent. Sounded better than Craig's real accent.

My favorite line in the movie is when Le Chiffre, having brutally whipped Bond's penis and testicles, thinks he has Bond broken and demands the password to Bond's bank account where the $110 million poker winnings have been deposited. Bond tells Le Chiffre, "I have a little itch down there, can you help me out?" Might be the best Bond one liner of all time.

Part of the movie was filmed at the Atlantis in the Bahamas and I immediately recognized the buildings from having been there and seen them in person. I also drove along that same road that goes from Nassau airport to Nassau and finally Atlantis.

I did not put Quantum of Solace in my queue because I read that it kind of sucks and the plot is confusing or incomprehensible. I will skip that one and wait for the new Bond film to come out in a couple months.

I recently saw the new Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises". It is definitely a sequel to the previous two recent Batman movies, and you really need to see those before watching this one. I thought it started kind of slowly, but picked up toward the end. All in all it's a decent film and worth a look.
