Gokudo on Cathcart
Went there for drinks for the first time. A little upscale but delicious cocktails in a very nice dark and modern Asian setting.
Decided to cancel our dinner plans elsewhere and opted to try multiple items on their menu - did not regret.
Would bring a date here for sure.

Some places that serve Canadian/American style Chinese food are OK. If you want really good Chinese food then only the places where Orientals eat will serve good food.

IMADAKE IZAKAYA on St.Catherine is always a fun time. I would not want to eat their food (Japanese pub style) every day, but the vibe is fun, food is good and Sake bombs! Of course, it's been 2+ years since I've been there.

If you want good ramen, check out Kinton Ramen on Bishop street.

It's my go-to ramen spot for downtown.

I had this yesterday. Spicy pork ramen!

Mama Bangkok, on the second level of 1616 St Catherine, is the most authentic Thai food I've had in Montreal. Give it a shot!

did try them. huge carb bomb. usually i've had stuff like pad thai in smaller noodle portion with more of the non-noodle stuff tossed in. ordering process using their dated touch screen POS system makes ordering slow. Then their 3 person shop couldn't keep up w/ the 6:30pm rush even though they were working non-stop. I think I waited 35 min for this fastfood.

was the pad thai tasty? yes. the rice noodle they use is very firm /aldente and is not water logged like more places, it's almost like they (mama) likely use a fresh noodle. strangely however it's a really smaller rice noodle. if anyone has been to BK thailand, even their noodle right from the street stalls are like linguine in width.

however MB the end product is missing some smoke infusion. Sadly as well, their 'grilled' lemon chicken' was dry if I remember that as another item I ordered with this protein... it had the texture of previously grilled and simply reheated... something I was not expecting from them for some reason (with the wait lol).

would I go there again, sure if I was in the area.

I hear Mama Bangkok is good but every time, I get ignored by the staff working there.

Like...they clearly see me waiting to get served but they chose not to acknowledge me.

Customer service there is non existent

i got no problem just avoiding that one item of the menu if all else is worth it. I don't change my whole car if I only got a alternator problem.

for instance it's not like their chicken pad thai, which is not char grilled, is previously wok cooked.
now, I'd had pho from viet places where the bbq chicken pieces are clearly to me, pre bbqed and tossed into the pho (they hoping it rehydrates since it's added to the dish, almost like a garnish...beause hey that's how proteins are used in alot of asian dishes, but pass for me).

in contrast, i've also had the misfortune of while passing through boston a few years ago, tried one of their 'famous' italian places on one of their major streets in the north end.

i tried several of their american italian classics... one being chicken parm w/ a pasta.

sigh.

reheated cutlet with a simple canned sauce topped over. i don't think i'd be displeased if it wasn't around $24USD or so and labour costs of migrant workers.
That's a huge no no for a anchor dish and requisite price... (unlike a $11 pho with accented protein).

I'm at this packed italian place looking around like god... does nobody else know this is crap?

omg there was a customer there waiting as I was, but he got visibly frustrated at their unclear directions of where he was supposed to grab his order.

I needed them to repeat what number they were calling out.

Are they using white meat chicken for the General Tao chicken?

Yes they are (wok cafe) Incidentally I tried several of their dishes the other night, I confirm they use chicken breast for their GT.

The best Asian food in Montreal is served by Alinna. She advertises here on Merb. Go check her out when she comes back from vacation.

The first thing she does when you arrive at her condo is she sits you down at her kitchen table and feeds you. The last time I was there she fed me pork dumplings and some fish, followed by some fruits. Great Asian meal, homecooked.

After that, it was off to the bedroom for the main course!

She only served me oranges and berries :(. She's a nice girl but barely does it for me, I find the experiences a bit bland.

This is exactly the problem George Costanza had. He started eating during sex, at least that's how I remember it in the episode of Seinfeld I watched.

YMMV, I understand that. Two weeks ago, I spent time with one of the very popular ladies at XO, who has pages of glowing reviews and it just did not quite do it for me. Happens. For me, a good connection and feeling comfortable as well as DFK, BBBJ and CIM etc are key.
