big public bets are not allowed on Merb under former moderation (not sure about the new mods but i doubt it) but if they were i would take that bet anyday, Mtl is not as good as they appear. If and only if they ever get to the the cup finals, playing the western champs is gonna be a whole different story.

Lets see what Joe.T predicts

***EDIT*** Should have known you would be all over that first post and beat me to the punch with your response Mr.T :)

FACT- Price is playing lights out hockey and is considered by many hockey experts to be the best goalie in all of hockey, they also may have the best back up in the entire NHL.

Here is another fact - http://www.nhl.com/ice/standings.htm

Sorry iggy but all evidence is showing that there is a good chance that the cup will be coming back to Canada in June, can you imagine the hot chicks on St.Catharine on that day, I will take pictures for you.:)

BTW- I hope "FACTS" don't bother you, some people can't stand "FACTS"

They are getting the wins but Chicago and Tamp Bay beat them pretty easily.

Pittsburgh and St Louis will be a good test this week.

It's still too early to plan a parade route.

Lets calm down ! There's not 20 games played ! What they're building right now is character and confidence! We're lucky that our second goalie is that good . Also that With a rookie goalie this team went to battle to the end the final of its conference and lots a game 1-0 ( unlucky shot of Vanek who touched the end of the stick of the blue shirts in the third period ) . They could have been in final.... L.A , Anaheim, Tampa are still good contender for the cup but the Habs are on fire right now. The playoff are another season by itself .
Let's enjoy it !

The East is very weak compared to the West. Proof of this occurred a couple of weeks ago when the Calgary Flames destroyed the habs on two occasions. The Flames will be lucky to make the playoffs in the West.

Montreal being atop the East standings has been somewhat of a mirage. They didn't play very well until a few games ago. The shootout has saved them several times. Carey Price has been ordinary, but has managed to steal a couple of games (with the help of goal posts) on a few occasions when he needed to. Tockarski has actually played better than him.

I still can't see how adding a 40-year has-been defenceman will help the team in the long run.

But the key to the habs' success so far has been their lack of injuries to most of their players. Bournival got hurt, but that happened in the first game he played and he was expected to see more time in the press box. Had he not been injured, he probably would have been sent down to Hamilton.

Injuries happen to every team & it's a long season. It's just a question of who will get injured and when.

Montreal has been at the top of the standings, but people should not be fooled. Once again, it's a long season & there's a whole lot of hockey to be played.

i agree. The habs have and will continue to struggle against almost any team from the West.

The habs don't have a bad team when everything is clicking right at the same time. However. they've struggled all season long to score goals, and Carey Price hasn't been his ol' self. The last time i checked, he was 30th among all goalies in G.A.A. As of today, Dustin Tockarski has better stats, but he hasn't played that much. So far, every game he's played was on the road. Maybe the coach is afraid he doesn't handle pressure as good when he's at home, who knows.

But where the habs have been very lucky so far, as i've already mentionned, is injuries. But they will have injuries, i'm certain of this. Look at today where the Pens announced that Pascal Dupuis will miss at least 6 months due to a blood clot on his lung. I wish him a quick recovery & the very best. This is a life-threatening situation.

Habs lost again last night. It's a team weaker than last season's version which is struggling to score goals. I think they're already realizing that signing PK Subban to that ridiculous 9 year/$72 million US contract was a boneheaded move. But blame the clueless owner for that one, not Marc Bergevin who was totally against giving him anything more than $7 million per season.

Let me make a bold prediction: the Habs will NOT make the playoffs this season.

The habs have already 17 wins and if they play for .500 they will do the series!!! So the team is winning and the coaches have asked to Pk to play a more defensive game to learn how to balance is offensive capabilities.

Habs still a young team learning how to win !

Marc7 buddy, Your beloved Canadiens lost with Price in net against a divisional 5th place team because they couldn't score more than one goal against. Your team is +1 overall. You need scoring badly. If Subban is not playing good defense already what is the possible justification for that outrageous contract since he is not a major scorer. Is it being a world class instigator/flopper?

My prediction: Unless some important additions are made the Canadiens will be an early playoff exit at best; similar issues as the Bruins no matter who is doing better between them.

Answer to thread question? NOPE!

Cheers,

Merlot

Agree with Merlot, they are not built to win the cup.

A semi-finale conference would be great enough to embellish Montreal 's early summer evening...

Subban is having a bad year (to his standards) and the habs have been flirting with first place for the first two months of the season. Add to the fact that the team allows as many goals with him on the ice than when he's not & it shows us that they can win without Subban, which makes the $72 million/9 year contract even more ridiculous than it already is.

Recently, they showed his stats on L'Antichambre (RDS) and he was one-hundredth-and-something for plus/minus among defencemen, thirty-something for points among defencemen, etc. Former habs coach Guy Carbonneau even added that P.K. wasn't even a top 30 defenceman in his eyes. The only category that Subban was among the leaders was in giveaways allowed. He was 4th. So i got to thinking...."what exactly does he bring to the team? what value does he have?"

What the habs really need is a #1 center. David Desharnais simply ain't the answer and he's having another terrible season. With the Flyers being among the worst teams in hockey this season and the team going nowhere, it wouldn't surprise me if star centerman Claude Giroux would be on the trading block (along with most of the team). Since he's being paid something like $10 million this season alone, trading partners are very limited. You'd need to trade him to a team that has a similar cap player to trade. And since Subban hasn't helped Mtl AT ALL and they need a #1 center, i believe that trading Subban for Giroux straight-up would be beneficial to both teams. Philly isn't going anywhere, as i mentionned, and their defence is absolutely terrible. So i'd say it may be a match made in heaven.

I didn't watch the entire game last night, but found out today that Carey Price was miraculous at times and if weren't for him, Minnesota would have scored 5-6 more goals easily. Galchenyuk scored his first goal in 10 games with the goalie out, so that goal doesn't really mean anything. The bottom line is that you need to score goals to win games, and when you score on average only 1-2 goals a game, then luck will eventually ran out.
