Max Lapierre, to me, is the best choice 1) He shows up every night 2) He has been with the organization a few years now 3) He will have a breakout season (just watch) 4) He's french. Normally, that means fuck all to me but this team needs a who knows exactly what it means to be a Canadien.

And,

5) He's at best a 3rd line player, possibly 4th. He rarely will see time on the powerplay.

That doesn't cut it. The captain has to be on either the top 2 lines or among the top 4 defencemen.

It sucks, but that's the truth. Lapierre won't be the Habs next captain. I guarantee it.

Plus, how is he perceived by his peers? I get the feeling that he gets along with only the french-speaking players, which are getting rarer these days on the Habs (almost like dinosaurs!), and this is very important to those in management who will make that selection. I get the feeling that he's regarded as an arrogant little prick who has favorable treatment just because he speaks french & he's a local.

Management doesn't select the captain's, the players do. Plus, Lapierre will see lots of ice time as a 3rd line player as he will be out checking the other teams best line every night. If the Habs do it right, Lapierre could have the potential top round out into a Gainey or Carbonneau type player

It's a lot better to be a Gainey type player than a Gainey type GM!

Not necessarily. Some teams do it that way and some don't. The team has already stated that if no one stands out, there will be no captain but three A's instead. You can't have a third line player as team captain no matter what language he speaks. The way it stands right now, we'll have to wait until training camp and the pre-season games are over before any decision is made. But it's pretty safe to say that Lapierre won't be in the running. And as far as naming a goalie as captain is concerned, league rules prohibit a goalie from wearing the C on his sweater no matter if the team labels him as captain or not.

Very true. I also don't think Carey Price will ever be named a captain.

Maybe in the garage leagues, but on most NHL teams, it's the coaching staff (and after consulting with upper management) that will chose the captain.

As for Lapierre being named captain, the odds of that happening are as good as Georges Laracque being named captain. It won't happen.

I can't see anyone being named captain until at least the midpoint of the season. The guy who should have been (and would have) named captain is now playing for the Ottawa Senators.

There was a rumor that Chris Nilan might come out of retirement and be named captain. Apparently though he has decided instead to take up swimming and just spend the rest of his time trying to save a few bucks while shopping.

I actually find it sad. He's had alcohol problems for the most part of his life & i'm fairly certain that this recent incident & his personal demons must be related in some way:
