I have always taken that question as small talk and use it to become friendly with them as well. It’s a conversation piece that can be considered air or using it to further your connection to the provider and vice versa. I have not taken the latter route, but if it does then I would for sure consider compensating them for their time. Unless it is agreed upon by both parties where it is no longer business, always assume it is and be willing to pay for it. Pretty sure most have it written somewhere that the donation is for their time too
I had booked a provider for a lengthy amount of time, we chatted for most of it since it was our first meeting as we hit it off. Eventually it went to the next step, she asked if I was ok for time and we continued until we were both satisfied. Before we even discussed her compensation, I was already going to give her something for her time she spent extra with me. It’s a gentlemanly thing to do, be that person that she wants to see. You will have a much better time.
