Blue Jays acquire Jose Reyes in monster trade with Marlins

Josh Johnson, Mark Buerhle, Yunel Escobar, Adeiny Hechavarria, Henderson Alvarez involved in deal

The Toronto Blue Jays appear to have solved their dilemmas at shortstop and on the mound in a monster swap with the Florida Marlins.

According to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Morosi of Fox Sports, the Jays have acquired Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson and Mark Buerhle in exchange for Yunel Escobar, Henderson Alvarez, Adeiny Hechavarria and Justin Nicolino. More players may be involved in the deal.

More to come.

Wow!! I'm shocked to see Escobar, Alvarez & Hechavarria all leaving the Jays at the same time!!! Shocked!!!

However, i'm not surprised to see Escobar leave after the controversy last year. It looks like the Jays got some very good players to help them next season. Wow!!!!!! :eyebrows:

I love this deal, that .337 batting average that Reyes had just two short years ago would give me goose bumps if I was a Blue Jays fan, Buerhle and Johnson are solid starters that will fill the rotation nicely, it definitely looks like a two horse race for the East between the Yankees and Blue Jays, meanwhile the Red Sox have been busy acquiring the living legend himself, non other than the incomparable David Ross:rolleyes:, the Red Sox message to their fans is quite clear.:yield:

I have a had a change of heart, after taking a closer look at the career numbers of one David Ross I can see that this is a great pick up, acquistions like this one will help the Red Sox challenge for the East, great pick up by Boston.:thumb:

Now i wouldn't be surprised to see A-Rod dealt to the Marlins since they have now the cap space to accomodate his crazy over-inflated contract.

Wow. The big loser in this deal? The people of Miami, Florida who now know what the people of Montreal know: Jeffrey Loria is one major scum sucking pig. He has now destroyed baseball in two cities, this time after getting the taxpayers to build him a zillion dollar stadium.

The comments in the Miami Herald suggests the folks aren't particularly happy in Miami.

Update on the blockbuster trade by the Jays & Marlins:

The trade hasn't been made official yet. Now it looks like as many as 12 players might be changing teams. Latest rumor is that the Jays are sending shortstops Yunel Escobar, Adeiny Hechavarria, starting pitcher Henderson Alvarez, Jeff Mathis, as well as a trio of highly ranked prospects — Justin Nicolino, Jake Marisnick and Anthony Desclafini — to Miami in exchange for starting pitchers Josh Johnson and Mark Buerhle, shortstop Jose Reyes, catcher John Buck and utility player Emilio Bonifacio.

More to come....

I still haven't heard anything positive about Miami's side of the trade. Heck, even the usually negative Toronto sports media even likes the trade the Jays made.

By the way, i'm in agreement about Loria, who was one of the architects (with his step-son David Samson) for baseball's demise in Montreal.

Why would you? There's nothing in this deal for the Marlins other than salary relief and big bux in Loria's pocket. Giancarlo Stanton is livid and wants out now, but that's not likely. The Marlins now have $0 committed for 2014.

The Marlins got $409M in public funding (on false pretense) that will cost the city $2.4 BILLION to pay off.

WOW! Nice Job AA! This is EXACTLY what the Jays needed! Starting pitching and star power in Reyes! Now go get Greinke Double A!!! This makes the basement a LOCK for the red sox.

Ohhhhhhhhhh Baby! the AL East just got better and tougher to compete in, let the games begin! (Oh man, it's only November, lol)

I dunno. CC Sabathia coming off elbow surgery, Phil Hughes, David Phelps ain't much of a pitching staff. No catcher, declining first baseman, declining third baseman, elderly shortstop coming off a broken leg, no right fielder, no DH. No money to spend. This looks a lot like the 1965 Yankees.

I hate to say it, but everything you wrote is absolutely true. I'm also not sure that the return of Mariano Rivera is such a good thing for the club, considering the money he'll be asking & his future somewhat uncertain. So let's look on the bright side: Robinson Cano. David Robertson. Maybe Ivan Nova? The jury's still out on him. Granderson hits 30 homeruns a year, but he strikes out as much as Dave Kingman did & doesn't hit for average. Indeed, there are huge question marks in the Bronx.

Will Russell Martin be back? Even if he does, he's not that much of an upgrade at the catching position. Maybe the Yankees should talk to another team & get them to talk to the Jays in order to set up a 3-way trade for one of their proven catchers.

As for the Jays, i expect them to name a manager within the next two weeks. My money is on Sandy Almomar Jr., but Manny Acta could also get the nod. Both Art Howe & Ken Macha want the job, but i'm not even sure they'll be granted an interview. I heard Don Wakamatsu's name being mentionned, but i also heard he wasn't even interviewed yet. Tim Wallach remains a possibility, being interviewed twice. So does Matt Williams, who was also interviewed.

Please stop with the personal insults merlot. Haha, just kidding mate, I do not take it personal and i dont see it as a personal insult... a personal insult is point blank telling another poster he is (insert naughty/nasty/ugly words here) ..... Attack the players and the teams but joke around if you'd like with each other as long as it adheres to M8's rules in the other official sports threads, Merci Beaucoup!

What a great night for the Jays and for us fans! Oh man, Christmas come early!

The big difference between the Sox and Yanks right now is that the Sox pulled the plug and made a move toward youth. With Lackey, Middlebrooks, and Ortiz coming back healthy and a ton of money to spend this winter, the Sox could look pretty good next year. It really all depends on how Cherington spends the money and whether or not he's willing to part with some of the pieces from what has become a very deep farm system.

The Yankees just look...what's the word...oh, right...old.

Were I a Jays fan, I'd be pretty excited about now.

Did you not say the same sorta things the last 3 seasons? When you gonna learn, dont ever bet against Hank, Hal and Brain, i mean BRIAN.
The last three seasons?? When the Yankees lost, lost, and lost again, blowing $600,000,000 in the process??? Those three seasons???

Blowing $600,000,000? Sorry Charlie but the Yanks make more than ANY team.... money well spent my friend, business is good for them. We hear the same ole same ole every offseason from you "yanks will be lucky to compete in the east" (yet they win the east) and the red sox are the best team "evah" (yet have not made the playoffs in 2 going on 5 years) thems your words pal, not mine, lol

This trade for the Jays just keeps getting better and better!

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington knew the Marlins had players on the trade market. But like everybody else in baseball, the magnitude of the team’s deal with the Blue Jays surprised him.

“Wasn’t expecting to see that,” Cherington said Tuesday night after learning the Jays reportedly acquired were on the verge of obtaining John Buck, Emilio Bonifacio, Mark Buehrle, Josh Johnson, and Jose Reyes for a large package of prospects.

The American League East sent the Yankees and Orioles to the playoffs last season with the Rays finishing three games behind in the wild card. Now the Jays have made an aggressive move.
For the Red Sox, a tough road back to respectability could be even tougher.

.......................................................................................................................................................................................................

Shortly after news broke Tuesday that the Blue Jays and Marlins were on the verge of a megadeal, a major league source confirmed the Red Sox had been discussing a smaller deal — albeit with some of the same players — with the Marlins.

The Sox, according to the source, were working on bringing All-Star shortstop Jose Reyes and righthander Josh Johnson, a player the team has long coveted, to Boston. It’s not known what the Sox were offering, but it certainly involved some of their top prospects.

Personally, I root for my team in wins and losses, not dollars on the bottom line. I'd also have a hard time feeling my team accomplished something, knowing that they'd bought their victories rather than earned them. In that sense, I feel sorry for Yankee fans.
