I would say for some trans people LL can be a good place to find clients as many people who are interested in us in that way are more familiar with LL than they are with MERB, Tryst, Indy, etc.; not to mention there aren't really dedicated spaces here on MERB for trans SPs to advertise and even if there is a trans filter usually there's not many options compared to the amount of trans people you can find on LL. So it's no surprise to me that a lot of my other friends who are trans masculine tell me that they primarily use LL, and that has also been the case for some of my trans femme friends too (although it seems perhaps slightly less important as a source of clients for trans women compared to trans men).
Personally, I have found that social media, Tryst, and Indy mostly bring me straight clients who are hiring me as a woman. To be clear, this is totally fine for me because I happily work as a woman using she/her pronouns or as a man using he/him pronouns. On the other hand, when I advertise on LL those clients are typically bi, pan, or gay and they are hiring me as a trans guy (he/him pronouns).
If I had more gender dysphoria or didn't feel as comfortable with my gender identity, I probably would want to stick with advertising on places like LeoList and gay escorting sites such as RentMen and Jock2Go to avoid getting straight men who would only want to hire me as a woman because I still have a pussy. Honestly, when I first started working I only advertised on sites such as LL, RM, and J2G because they were the only places where I got clients who didn't misgender me, which was important for me at a time in my life where I felt more fragile about having my gender identity affirmed.
Thankfully, I'm at a place in my life now where I feel very solid in my gender so I am able to advertise in places typically catering to straight hetero dynamics and I just go into those dates knowing that the expectation is that I'm being hired because the client views me as a woman since I still have my vagina.
But yes... unfortunately LL is super expensive to advertise on and I hate to admit that there are indeed a lot of people who aren't real or are just trying to scam others.
It has already been mentioned by people in this thread, and in other threads, so I won't repeat too much but I will place the emphasis on looking at whether or not the person has a website linked that you can visit, if they have a social media presence, and if they are advertising anywhere else with the exact same photos and the exact same ad copy that looks suspiciously generic. On LL specifically you can look for those who have verified photos and are therefore part of the verified directory, and you can pay attention to the dates of those verified photos to see how recent the pictures are to make sure it's not someone who had their pics stolen years ago to be recycled by scammers/bots.
