What is the best recent movie you’ve seen.

Pacific Rim: Entertaining, but hardly exemplary of either Si-Fi, story, special effects or acting. It's one of these movies you want to see just to cross it off your "bucket list" of movies. Wait until you can catch it on Netflix or Amazon Prime as it's definitely worth time invested. Basic plot of Armageddon Scenario with heroes involved. A couple of subplots of personal catharsis. Special effects were good, but lacked real creativity. Definitely see it, but don't pay to see it.
Monsieur Hire (on Netflix, French with English subtitles)
Mr Hire is an asocial man who spends all his evenings watching his pretty neighbor. Meanwhile a young woman is found murdered and the detective considers him a prime suspect.
From the description I expected something simple about voyeurism, and how abnormal people are always considered suspicious. I expected he was a dysfunctional chronic voyeur, but he has sex regularly with prostitutes, until he gets infatuated with his neighbor and starts watching her.
The story is more complex and satisfying than I thought. I can't really tell more without spoiling it, but I highly recommend to everyone who likes good dramas. It's a slow movie, with an understated erotic atmosphere (there is no actual sex).
The ending is excellent. I started by really disliking the main caracter, but I gradually felt sympathy and a certain liking for him as the story developped. Ah, the stupid and tragic things we do for love of a woman.

After watching just 5 minutes of movie Mr Hire on Netflix, I remembered a movie I saw back in the nineties starring Michel Simon. It turned out that Mr Hire was first released in 1946 and was directed by Julien Duvivier, the original title is"Panique". Leconte just did a remake of it. I have just watched the remake on Netflix, though I really loved the original, it was much more dramatic, and was one of the few movies that I will keep remembering until the end of times. I think that this was the first time I watched Miched Simon playing, and he was just grand in that movie. The last scene was much more emotional in the original than in Leconte's remake.
Unfortunately, I could not find the original movie on Youtube, but just a few minutes of it. The glorious days of black and white french movies.

My all time favorite movie is Cocteau's La Belle et la Bête. Well, that and Casablanca. Well, also On the Waterfront.
I never thought Mr Hire would be so well known here. Since we are talking remakes:

A Chinese remake of the Cohen brothers ''Blood Simple''. A jealous husband hires a crooked officer to find evidence that his wife has an affair with one of his employees and then to kill the pair. The hitman fools the boss into believing he did the job and after being paid he kills him with the woman's gun to frame her for the crime. Complicated imbroglios ensues.
Objectively it is not as good as the original. It's much more colorful and carnivalesque and some of the characters are extremely caricatural, but I also found it more fun and enjoyable. Visually it is very beautiful and the old-time Chinese desert makes it an interesting setting for a remake of that story (and the woman is more attractive than Frances McDormand; I'm just a sucker for Chinese women).

I agree. "Chloe" was very well made. Filmed in Toronto & starring Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried and Julianne Moore, it's the story of a high-end escort who's hired by the Moore character & asked to seduce her husband, played by Neeson.
Liam Neeson lost his wife, Miranda Richardson, while filming this movie. Richardson died in a Montreal hospital hours after a fall while skiing at Mont Tremblant.
I also liked "Exotica" very much. The film was more low budget, but well made. It was Mia Kirshner's breakthrough movie. She later played a sexy terrorist in the fantastic tv series "24". Agoyan's wife also had a small part in the movie. I became a Leonard Cohen fan after watching this movie, since it contains several Leonard Cohen songs & the stripper (Kirshner) regularly dances to one of his songs (Everybody Knows).

However, one Atom Egoyan film that i liked very much was "Ararat", which deals with the massacre of Armenians earlier in the 20th century, which has always been denied by the Turks.

Hilarious. Second Aniston movie where I couldn't stop laughing at times. The other one was Just Go With It. Don't know but I just don't think Aniston is a very good actress but yeah she sure can move yet in her own rigid way. Must be that Brangelina thing that is still lingering.
Oblivion was good, if you're into that type of movies...I liked it despite the fact that I just hate Tom Cruise...C'mon, man, Scientology, really ?? ...Ya should know better than that... Now, concerning Oblivion: Great action, a lot of mystery (although you see a few things coming...). If you have a good home theater system, you will enjoy the crisp HD image and the fantastic 5.1 (in this case 7.1) sound... Beautifully crafted.

What irks me is why the main character would need to borrow $100,000 from the Russian thug when he only needed $12K which he can make on his own from online trading to make that 2 mil at the day trading firm in ten days?!?!?!?!? Another thing, at a day trading firm you can get the leverage of 4X your money not 2X. Plus day trading is "dead" nowadays. Ahhhh too many loop holes.

Just came out of seeing "The Wolf of Wall Street". Fantastic film...it's probably Scorsese's best since Casino.
I also have to mention that DiCaprio's second wife in the film is super hot (ie. Margot Robbie)! I'd kill to see a SP with the same looks as her! :eyebrows:

And that nude scene of her in lingerie blew my mind: whoa!!! Definitely model material!
I was impressed with the Brooklyn accent as well (given that she's Australian, originally). She definitely held up her own, acting-wise. I have a feeling her career will take off after this film.
I have just seen The Wolf of Wall Street. I already read the book a couple of years ago. A lengthy book, supposedly an autobiography, but I found that some parts were hard to believe. Also, Belfort sounded very arrogant in that book and he was almost bragging about his drug-addiction problem.
The movie is long too (about 3 hours long). We had many laughs and there are many debauchery scenes in there. The last part of the movie was boring though and I could not wait for it to end. A few people left the theatre before the end of the movie.

I just finished watching "Prisoners". It's directed by Quebecer Denis Villeneuve, who masterfully directed "Incendies" just a couple of years ago, which wound up nominated and winning many major awards.
'Prisoners' stars Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, Terrence Howard, Melissa Leo & Maria Bello.
How far would you go to protect your family? Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman) is facing every parent's worst nightmare. His six-year-old daughter, Anna, is missing, together with her young friend, Joy, and as minutes turn to hours, panic sets in. The only lead is a dilapidated RV that had earlier been parked on their street. Heading the investigation, Detective Loki arrests its driver, Alex Jones, but a lack of evidence forces his release. As the police pursue multiple leads and pressure mounts, knowing his child's life is at stake the frantic Dover decides he has no choice but to take matters into his own hands. But just how far will this desperate father go to protect his family?
Jake Gyllenhaal is the movie's main character & plays the police detective in charge of the investigation into the children's disappearance. Melissa Leo plays one of the suspect's mother, while the remaining characters portray the children's parents.
It was a very entertaining movie & it lasts just under three hours. But it's such a good movie that it seems like only 2 hours. You might actually wish that the movie is longer than it is once it has reached the ending.
As usual, Hugh Jackman is superb. He's currently one of our finest actors today.
I give it 4 stars out of 5. It was very well received all over the world, including at the recent Toronto International Film Festival.
