I agree with Reverdy. It was an embarrassing performance (again!) by the lowly Red Wings, who once again proved that they are a team in decline. A team that has lost several of its core players from the past, which haven't been replaced. You replace the likes of a Lidstrom & a Holmstrom with an Alfredsson?? Really Kenny boy??

The very average Jimmy Howard was pulled extremely early when he allowed 3 goals on only 8 shots. I expect this will happen more frequently this season. Get used to the Monster, Red Wings fan. Beware, beware, beware!

On another note, Ottawa came to Detroit ready to play & was lead by their captain, Jason Spezza. Mr. Alfredsson will regret leaving his beloved Senators for the declining Red Wings, who are the hockey personification of the Detroit economy. Sad.

"Embarrassing performance"? Yes, definitely. "Again"? No, definitely not. It was ONE bad game, and those occasionally happen even to magnificent franchises like Detroit (sort of like EPIC COLLAPSES IN THE PLAYOFFS sometimes happen to a certain hockey team located in Toronto).

As for "lowly", please check the standings. If Detroit is "lowly", then so is just about every other team in the league, including a certain hockey team located in Toronto and posting almost the same results as the Wings a mere 10 games into this 82 game season.

As for replacing Lidstrom & Holmstrom: You CANNOT replace the second greatest d-man who ever lived and you CANNOT replace Homer, who was the best in the world at what he did. That doesn't mean that the great Kenny Holland has erred - You might as well ask why Edmonton never replaced Gretzky!

Wow ! was around the world for a while.
Came back for a week in MO and here on merb it's the same circus with TO starting season and their beloved fans.
Can't wait to see what stupidity they will pull this year to beat last year's epic collapse !

Just spoke about it, with one of them 'fans', last month at the SWFC and all he could do was...

We laughed at how there was more chances for Chinese to buy heir own Hockey team in the NHL and win the cup than TO to make it thru the playoffs without being the laughing stocks once again.

Have a nice hockey season and.... laugh !

Although not yet cleared to play, it looks like the Stache was given the okay to train for a potential fight with Phil Kessel.

Better double up on the shin pads George.

Good one, balls man!

However, i'm pretty certain that Big George Laracque.....oops, i meant Parros.....won't dare approach one of the greatest players in the league since he knows that either Colton Orr or Frazier MacLaren will come knocking.....I doubt Parros wants to get knocked out again by Orr!

p.s. Why did you post a picture of Parros & Desharnais at today's practice? :D

Phil Kessel, ONE of the greatest players in the league should read ' one of the thousands of players of the league', if that.
He sure knows how to get out of a sticky situation, doesn't he. Absolute coward and your proud of him,Geez

Phil "The Thrill" Kessel has been a top 10 NHL scorer in both points and goals on a yearly basis. He is indeed one of the greats in the world's top hockey league.

Phil Kessel is easily among the top 10 hockey players on the planet. :thumb:

Phil " The Schtick " Kessel has made the top 10 in the last two seasons not season after season.
Crosby had more points thanThe Schtick AND play exactly 1/2 the amount of games. Now that is a top ten player !! Crosby that is !
I would put him top 50. Martin St.Lous won a scoring championship but I would not put him as a top ten player in the PLANET.
When did Canada vote The Toronto Maple Leafs Canada's team? I honestly thought it would the Montreal Canadiens.

Nope. The habs are Quebec's team, a province that doesn't want anything to do with the rest of Canada & continuously shows it's intention to separate from Canada by electing separatist provincial governments, on top of supporting a federal party (BQ) whose sole intention is to protect the rights of the separatist province in pursuing its ultimate goal: separation.

On another note, a strong case could be made that the habs are Team Europe.

By the way, it's not to late for you folks to sign up to Canada's team:

Quebec was ruled the last 10 years by a federalist party ! Duh !!!!!
You maybe know about satistics in Hockey but you stink at Hockey on the whole as much as you do in politics.

All I hear everywhere around the world is how Canada is loosing it and going down on all sorts of issues which is no surprise a majority in this country now would vote for losers in hockey as well as their leaders who specialize at self sabotage.

Keep it up :thumb:

Correction: Phil "The Stick" Kessel was a top 10 scorer exactly TWICE, and one of those was in a joke of a dramatically shortened season. His career average in points is WAY below point-a-game and he has NEVER even scored 40 goals in a season.

The most goals he ever scored was 37.

His best season in points was 82 and his second best was 64.

These would be good stats for a defenceman (!) but not for an offensive forward who doesn't hit, doesn't check, doesn't fight, doesn't do faceoffs, and doesn't play anything remotely resembling a two-way game. The guy is paid a ridiculous amount of money to score, which is ALL he can do, and for a "scorer", his numbers are anemic.

Phil Kessel is easily among the top 10 hockey players on the planet.

Well, let's be generous to Phil and limit "the planet" to the NHL. Let's continue with the generosity and limit it to ACTIVE players. Let's be even more generous and not include any goaltenders.

Now, let's start naming players who are FAR BETTER than Kessel: Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Toews, Kane, Hossa, Bergeron, Chara, Lucic, Subban, Crosby, Malkin, Neal, Kunitz, Letang, Ovechkin, Backstrom, Spezza, Karlsson, H. Sedin, D. Sedin, Stamkos, St. Louis, Staal, Perry, Getzlaf, Suter, Parise, Tavares, Moulson, Giroux, Nash, Marleau, ...

Those are just the OBVIOUS ones off the top of my head. And I didn't even bother listing past-their-prime veterans such as Selanne, Jagr, Alfie, Bertuzzi, Lecavalier, Iginla, Thornton, etc, etc - many of whom are STILL better than "The Stick" and ALL of whom have had far better careers that "The Stick" will NEVER be able to match.

Top 10 my ass!

I believe Quebec is still a member of this great nation named Canada. Show me that strong case that the Habs are Team Europe. Dig deep now.

Yes, unfortunately. No need to remind me. For as long as Canada is stuck with Quebec, income taxes will continue being high. I've never seen a province that has been such an economic burden to the rest of Canada! Quebec's philosophy seems to be 'give me, give me, give me!'

On another note, TEAM EUROPE beat the sad-sack Rangers last night. Congrats.

Look behind you.
Seeing that there are a lot of Leaf fans here and the Oilers play them tonight.... Hoping that Richard Bachman the goalie they brought up from the minors is playing and has another good night... Do not like to see anyone hurt but hope Dubnyk's injury is a long one ( all season ), may be the only way the Oilers will try someone else.
GO Oilers GO.

Is Bachman the same guy who was with Minnesota?

What's wrong with Dubnyk this season? He was a very good young goalie last season. And from what i've heard, he came to camp in great shape. Did his play regress because he got married this past summer?

I heard today on Hockey Central at Noon that the Oilers would love to have Dion Phaneuf in their lineup and would give him whatever he wanted if he became a free agent after this season. This got me thinking on why the Leafs called up JML and took him on their west coast trip. They claim he likely won't dress and is only there as a 7th defenceman. So i wondered why not just leave him with the Marlies. Now i'm starting to wonder if Nonis isn't working on a trade where he'd send a defenceman to another team, and Liles is there as a back-up plan if the trade does materialize.
