With lawsuits like this, http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/...-boogaard.html

and the head of the NHLPA looking to address fights, http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2...e-of-fighting/

the question is, which one of these two guys will be driving a cab in two years?

Guess I should have made that one year. :D

Gotta love it: the leafs have lost all 3 post-Olympic games. (If you count the Olympics, that's FIVE losses in a row for Tyler Bozak's roommate.)

Anybody else notice that when Cairo was on his enforced vacation the leafs had a hot streak? Not that I want TOO much of the credit, but since Cairo came back the leafs haven't won a single game!

It's like the reverse of the stinkin' leafs who are almost always badly outshot and outplayed yet are sometimes saved by "Delay of Game" Bernier. The Griffins (because - let's be honest - there have been more Griffins than Wings almost all season) outshot the Avs by a large margin but still lost. Can't ( Jimmy, cough cough) understand (Howard cough cough) how it (goalie cough cough) happened.

The key word is "idle". The leafs have been crap since the Olympics: LOST to the Isles, LOST to the Habs, LOST to the Blue Jackets...before FINALLY squeaking out a lucky overtime win. One win in 4 games - and even that one fluke was -as usual for the most disgusting team in pro sports - not in regulation time.

So you are QUITE correct that it is a great night in hockey when the leafs are IDLE. It would be great for the NHL if the leafs were ALWAYS idle - they are the ugly, oozing PIMPLE on the face of a great sport.

***Update***

A HUGE Merci to the Coyotes for destroying the Canadians tonight. I guess talk of the cup will now go away since the savior Thomas Vanek decided not to show up again, much like he does when he is playing somewhere he does not want to be. Heard earlier today from some hockey insiders that Vanek may not try all that hard for the Canadians so he wont risk getting injured so he can hit the Jackpot as scheduled on July 1, likely with the Wild where he wants to go because his wife is from there. Way to go Bergervin, trade away picks for a guy that is more about the $ than the team. Cant wait to hear what Don Cherry has to say on Coaches Corner this saturday on HNIC.

Ahhhhh, Great Night in the NHL!

Doc, you do understand that will be "saved for posterity", right?

I guess you're referring to the fact that Doc has publicly stated that Doctor Babcock is the best coach in the NHL. No argument there. Too bad for the leafs that they don't have a decent coach.

Babcock is ONE OF THE BEST coaches in the NHL, not THE best. I'd still take Ken Hitchcock, Lindy Ruff & Claude Julien over Babcock. Maybe even Dave Tippett & Paul MacLean. But he's definitely top 7 & fortunate that Steve Yzerman & Ken Holland were part of Hockey Canada or else i doubt he would have been named head coach of the Olympic hockey team. However, i'm sure they would have found him a spot among the assistant coaching staff.

I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but this is the fact: DETROIT SUCKS. And another fact is that no one sees them improving over the next 5 years. Too many old players, too many average-to-marginal players. Very average goaltending.

The only correct part of this quote is the final 3 words. If we can get rid of Jimmy Howard we'll be fine.

Perhaps you are unaware of the meaning of the word "facts", so I'll try to help you by giving you some examples of "facts".

It's a fact that Toronto has not even made it to the finals since 1967, a period of 47 YEARS and counting.

It's a fact that Brian Burke stated his goal was to make the playoffs every year and NEVER ONCE made them during his entire time as leafs GM before he got fired.

It's a fact that Dave Nonis gave David Clarkson a 7 year contract (!!!) for over $35 million (!!!!!!!) and that he is on pace to score only about 20 points this entire season. It is also a fact that the leafs do better without Clarkson (during his frequent injuries and suspensions) than they do with him.

It's a fact that Toronto gave up on Tuukka Rask and Ben Scrivens, who are both better than "Delay of Game" Bernier and James Reimer (although, to be fair - Reimer almost never plays).

It's a fact that Phil Kessel and Tyler Bozak are not just linemates but also roommates.

It's a fact that the one and only Leaf to EVER win the Conn Smythe was Dave Keon...way, way back in 1967.

It's a fact that NO Leaf has EVER won the Norris.

Get the picture? A fact is something that can be proven with statistics or documentation. Many, many, MANY people say "LEAFS SUCK"...but that in itself is not a "fact". However, we can use facts - including some of the ones I've mentioned here - to show WHY so many, many, MANY people DO say that the "LEAFS SUCK" and have been doing so for 47 YEARS and counting.

No need to thank me - as always, I am very happy to assist you in your ongoing education.

Best wishes.

I think all of Canada is fortunate that Stevie and Kenny were part of Hockey Canada! With those two brilliant hockey minds in control, and with Doctor Babcock as head coach, it's no wonder that Canada won its second consecutive Olympic Gold Medal.

On the other hand, and needless to say, the people even remotely connected to the leafs were UNABLE to win ANY medal at the recent Olympics. No surprise there!

That's not what you wrote in the Olympics thread on February 22. Has a lot really changed in 16 days?

Yea, he will have to be THE BEST coach in the entire NHL to win any playoff games this season, hell he will have to perform miracles to even get that sad sack team from deadtroit to the playoffs! He looks like he has aged 5 years after zettyburg went down in Sochi and another 10 since he found out datysuk was lost as well... now lets see what babCock is really made of. Great players make even a decent coach look good and anyone could have coached team Canada to gold and probably much easier and better than ole "babs" did it.

I wrote a lot of gibberish back in February in the Olympics thread. I was suffering from Olympics fever & had jumped on the Canadian bandwagon. Whatever i wrote about Babcock back then should have been taken with a grain of salt.

p.s. My apologies to Joel Quenneville & Bruce Boudreau for mistakenly omiting their names in a prior post. They are as good coaches as Mike Babcock is. So i revise my statement: Mike Babcock is definitely a top 10 NHL coach.

Great players make even a decent coach look good.

You could be right: The fact that Detroit has had so many great players for the last two and a half decades - making the playoffs for 22 consecutive seasons and winning 4 Cups - has certainly helped to make all Detroit coaches look very good.

Toronto, on the other hand, has had very few players who were even half-decent for almost half a century. We all know about the 47 YEARS of complete and utter failure. We all know that the leafs haven't made it to the finals since 1967! We all know that when they made the playoffs last year (in a SHORTENED season) it was the first time in a freakin' DECADE that they did so! (What an embarrassment to Canada!) We all know that they then lost - as expected - in the first round, by staging the most cowardly and EPIC COLLAPSE in the entire long history of Stanley Cup Playoff game sevens! We all know how laughably bad they were, still are, and will forever be....and THAT certainly doesn't make their ownership, management or coaches look even close to competent. Still, if you're Dave Nonis or Randy Carlyle, a paycheque is a paycheque. And if you're Tyler Bozak, you get a big fat paycheque and don't even have to pay rent - thanks to your linemate and roommate Phil Kessel.

anyone could have coached team Canada to gold.

Well, maybe anyone except Randy Carlyle. There's a reason that there was not a single leaf associated in any way with Team Canada - not as a player, not as a manager, not as a coach. In fact, the only leafs who went to the Olympics were JVR, Tyler's roommate and Kulemin. What did these 3 have in common? Simple: zero medals...to go along with the zero Cups their team has had since 1967.

 Well well well, sure was quiet at Honda Center tonight besides the "Go Leafs Go" chants from half the crowd, and of course from the BOO's by the home town fans as the Leafs slap the scabs back to third in the east and further distance themselves from the dead things in the east with a 3-1 win over one of the top 3 teams in all of the NHL.

Phil The Thrill Kessel had another 3 points as did is "roomie" Tyler Bozak and Jonathan "Big Game" Bernier was simply amazing in net once again. Actually the Leafs D played really well and Bernie only had to make one or 2 tough saves while the rest looked routine as he was seeing everything thanks to the D boxing out the Ducks all night long.

There is the 2 points we MUST have on this Cali 3 game road trip, anything else is gravy but what the heck, lets get 2-4 more "BOYZ!"

Oh man i would love to see the postgame presser by Torts tonight! BabCock would be a good fit in VanCity but Torts would be suicidal in Deadtroit!
Who knows....maybe in a few months after both Detroit & Vancouver miss the playoffs, both teams may trade one another's coaches & Torts may wind up in Detroit!
