Joe.t has the season ended already? Did I sleep through it? Don't get too overexcited yet my friend.

Gee, K, you and your 3 Muskateer friends were celebrating by the second week of April.

What a slide your Red Sox have taken. From 20-8 to 22-15, a record of 2-7 in the last 9 games.

You are absolutely right the season is still fresh, and it's going to be an interesting race to the end. And by the way, the Rays are heating having reached .500 by winning their last 4 games.

The Yankees have won between 2.2 and 3.2 games more than their adjusted figure, depending on which metric you choose.
The Royals have won between .6 and 2.2 games more than they should have.

What you'll find throughout is that the metrics tend to line up pretty well. I personally prefer 3rd order as it considers strength of schedule as well as run differential.
http://www.baseballprospectus.com/standings/

Let's see. Yankees won 3-2 beating the Kansas City Royals. Yankees got 1 run in Run differential.
Red Sox lost to the Toronto Blue Jays, 3-2. Red Sox lost 1 run in Run differential.

But who cares. Yankees gained a game in REAL standings, not some statistical standings of what they are supposed to be if stars were aligned up.

And luck is the factor? No. It's the team with the most runs once the final out of the game is made who wins.

Mariano Rivera just got his 14th save of the season protecting yet another 1 run lead. No luck there. Just an accomplished pitcher.

Ya know when ppl write "lol" you dont always laugh out loud" but oh man, that made me really LOL!

Seems april was a mirage for some teams in the AL East. As of this moment now in the month of May, the red sox are playing the worst of all 5 teams having gone 3-7 in their last ten. Compare that with the O's going 6-4, Yanks 7-3, Rays 6-4, and the Jays 4-6 in each of the last ten games for each club respectively.

It is not about team batting average or luck. The Yankees are winning with a good ball club and a very good Manager.

I seem to recall a lot of people laughing when the Yankees acquired Vernon Wells earlier this year from the Angels. Now the only people laughing are the Yankees, not only at you guys, but also at the Angels, for paying Wells $14.5 million per year on what remains on his contract so that he could have 9 homers and a .298 batting average as the Yankees starting left fielder (while the Yankees chip in the meager $6.5 million balance per year). Meanwhile, the Angels are getting a .207 batting average and .338 slugging average out of their latest $25 million dollar man, Josh Hamilton. Someone forgot to tell the Angels he has a 2 cent head to go with his physical abilities. So the Angels are paying $39.5 million for collectively one OF slot, and all they are getting is .207, 4 home runs and 11 RBIs for all that money.

Run Differential Saga

So the NY Yankees won another game by 2 runs. NY goes up by 2 games against Boston. Boston loses by 8 runs, 11-4.

So look a
t the run differential now. Yankees have a +19 run differential and Red Sox a +20 run differential. Not much of a difference.

S
tatistics is nice to play with, but there are plenty of exceptions to the means.

American League

LA Dodgers in the 1960's were an example of a team with very good pitching and a low powered offense. LA in 1966 averaged 3.7 runs per game offense while allowing an average of 3.0 runs per game. LA finished first in the NL and played Baltimore in the World Series. Baltimore won the world series, but the Dodgers won the World Series in 1955 (Brooklyn), 1959, 1963 and 1965.

Here are the other average Runs Scored and average Runs Allowed for the other years the Dodgers were in the world series:

Year Avg. Runs ScoredAvg. Runs Allowed
19663.73.0
1965 3.83.2
1963 3.93.4
1959 4.54.3
1955 5.64.2

Notice that the only year the Run differential was a lot was 1955. Yet the Dodges won in 1955, 1959, 1963 and 1965, only losing in 1966.

A team can certainly win with good pitching, good defense and a scrappy offense. I said scrappy, not crappy.

Hey Boyz,

Meanwhile Buchholz had another very good performance right after Lester's magnificent game.

really,

Merlot

I heard that Buchholz had a new shipment of cream brought in after the previous shipment was dumped.

Only this time, Clay ordered the beige color cream to blend in with his skin.

Look at Cleveland ...

Gee, the team that was proclaimed as the ultimate 6th place team is tied for first place in the AL Central with Detroit. How can that be? Our self-proclaimed resident ex-spurt said Cleveland Stinks? How can the Indians be doing so good, winning 8 out of their last 10 games? :noidea:

Daydreamer,

The difference between the 1966 Dodgers and the 2013 Yankees is that the 1966 Dodgers' offense was NEVER going to be any good whereas the Yankees' offense will be getting better the second half this year when half their team that is now on the DL returns. The Dodgers also had 2 of the better 1-2 punches of all time in Koufax and Drysdale which amply made up for the lack of offense, except in the World Series.

With a doubleheader sweep of the Indians tomorrow, the Yanks have a chance at days end, to sit atop of the standings, not just the American League, but ALL of MLB. Not to shabby, eh rumps, eh merlot, eh jayman?

The "boyZ" need to chirp, so i will be happy with a split

Iggy,

What is comical is not too long ago Rumpleforeskin was discounting the Yankees's wins over Cleveland earlier this year because the Indians were allegedly not a major league team. Cleveland is actually currently in 1st place in the AL Central. Considering the ass whippings the Yankees gave Cleveland earlier this year it might be tempting to desire a sweep. I will take a split of the DH.

Beav,

Seems that was not the first time 4skin was wrong and surely wont be the last. Vidal Nuno gets his first Yankees start in the 2nd game, ironically he was drafted by the Indians.

Unfortunately Nuno has not pitched in a while because lots of other guys in the bullpen are hot. Nuno had thrown 3 scoreless innings in long relief and on the shelf since then. He needs work BADLY. This guy is a crafty type pitcher who throws junk. Throwing him in the second game is a great move because it gets him work and also keeps the starting 5 fresh and on rotation without having to move someone up and start them on short rest.

Iggy,

I don't know if you saw the analysis of Vernon Wells on Baseball Tonight by Aaron Boone but what has happened is the Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long shortened up his swing and the result is that Wells is killing fastballs. Video analysis by Aaron Boone and ESPN. It is not an accident that the Yankees have revived some dormant bats. It is called proper coaching and improved technique. Even professionals benefit from it.

A change of scenery and a fresh look is probably good for some big league players. When Granderson returns Wells will probably stay in Left, Granderson will return to Center and Gardner will go to Right.

They said today on YES that Gardner will likely stay in center, Grandy to left and they wont take Ichiro out for Wells, Ichiro is one of the best outfielders in the game defensive wise and as good a bat or better than wells overall. Wells will likely be the right handed dh or full time dh......... nice problem for Girardi to have eh? DEPTH is a good thing.
