Yup, plenty of time for them to find a few more starting pitchers, maybe take payroll up to $225.

I agree with Buster on the bullpen and defense, but until the "Bombers" lol come up with legitimate 3-4-5 hitters, they're probably more like 20-25. They're real strong at 1-2 with Gardner and Ellsbury. They have a bunch of 6-7 hitters, a couple of 8-9. Maybe McCann is a number 5, but the middle is empty. No way are they have a top 10 offense with no number 3 and no cleanup hitter.

Seems Buster agrees with me. "Manager Joe Girardi will have some unusual issues to sort through, because it's really hard to say who should be hitting third, fourth and fifth in that lineup. Maybe Carlos Beltran will bat in one of those spots if he has something left, and maybe Mark Teixeira will, following an offseason investment in himself." How he can say that the Yanks have no idea who will hit 3-4-5 and rank them as high as 10th is mystifying.

Buster, by the way, did nail the number 1 offense.

MLB wants Orioles & Jays to resolve Duquette drama

TORONTO – A tipping point in the Dan Duquette saga may be approaching, and while some deft manoeuvring is still required, leverage may be shifting to the Toronto Blue Jays in their pursuit of the Baltimore Orioles executive.

To be sure, Major League Baseball is running out of patience with the ongoing mess and the damaging perception that’s been left to linger. One industry source tells Sportsnet baseball officials are nudging the Orioles to either strike a deal for Duquette or shut down the matter entirely.

Time is ticking down on this.

Realistically, despite the firm lines in the sand drawn by Orioles managing partner Peter G. Angelos, retaining Duquette when he wants to leave would be counterproductive, and he only needs to look to the Blue Jays’ experience with John Farrell for proof.

After the 2011 season, the Blue Jays rebuffed an approach from the Red Sox for their then manager by demanding Clay Buchholz as compensation, winning the day and setting the stage for Bobby Valentine to gong show Boston’s 2012 season.

But bigger picture, retaining Farrell – who wanted to return to Boston – was a mistake, and his desire to leave eroded the organization’s faith in him and led to mistrust of him among players in the clubhouse during a difficult campaign.

Shortly after the season ended, the sides settled on Mike Aviles as compensation for Farrell, with 40-man filler David Carpenter sent to the Red Sox to complete the transaction – probably the place where they should have landed a year earlier.

Can the Orioles really believe they’ll avoid similar toxicity if they retain Duquette, who is under contract through the 2018 season but wants the Blue Jays job as president and CEO the way Farrell wanted to manage the Red Sox?

Forcing someone to stay in a relationship when their heart is elsewhere is no recipe for success. Neither is retaining someone strictly on principle (or spite), especially when not everyone is on the same page.

One path to a deal may be by helping the Orioles save some face by offering a player or prospect marginally better than the token bodies established as precedent for such transactions.

A player like Dioner Navarro, as Sportsnet colleague Jeff Blair suggested earlier this week, makes some sense. Totally ludicrous would be another story making the rounds – a package of Jeff Hoffman and Max Pentecost, both first-round draft picks in 2014 that cost the team nearly $6 million total in signing bonuses.

Edward Rogers, the deputy chairman of team owner Rogers Communications Inc., is handling the negotiations, based on comments made by Angelos to the Baltimore Sun, and given that he’s listed as the club’s control person with Major League Baseball, it makes sense that he’s driving the bus.

Now is the time to give the Orioles an opening, but not break the bank, because they have far more to lose here than the Blue Jays.

While it would be ideal to have a president and CEO in place to make a mid-season call, if needed, on GM Alex Anthopoulos (who is in the final year of his deal), the team still has Paul Beeston (the franchise icon currently trapped in no man’s land) in place if all else fails, with an appealing job that many in the industry will still covet.

That’s a much better situation than the Orioles will be in if everything falls apart for all the reasons above, and should provide enough incentive to get a deal done.

The great Ernie Banks, dead at age 83

Ernie_Banks.jpg

The lawyer for the family of Chicago Cubs great Ernie Banks said Sunday that the legendary player died Friday after suffering a heart attack, just a week short of his 84th birthday.

Banks passed away Friday at 83 after a storied 19-year playing career and 40-plus years as an ambassador for baseball and the city of Chicago. At a news conference Sunday, his widow, Liz, spoke briefly and introduced family attorney Mark Bogen, who read a short statement and declined to take questions.

Known worldwide as "Mr. Cub," Banks became the Cubs first African-American player on Sept. 17, 1953, and went on to become a two-time National League Most Valuable Player. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1977. In 2013, he received a Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of his goodwill. At the time, he equated the medal to the Nobel Peace Prize.

Bogen praised Banks for his contributions inside and outside of baseball, including support for the military, gay rights, kids with disabilities and numerous charities.

Mr. Cub dies at age 83

I met 'Mr. Cub' back in 2006 during one of my trips to Las Vegas. He was having an autographs session at Caesar's Palance. I was actually on my way to see Pete Rose & just happened to bump into Banks' booth on my way there. He was by himself & at first i wasn't sure who he was. And then i realized who it was and told him "Mr. Ernie Banks, i presume?" He smiled, shook my hand and joked "You must be on your way to see Pete Rose. He's upstairs."

We spoke for another 30 seconds and he was kind enough to take a picture with me, which i will post once i find it.

Rest in peace, Mr. Cub.

Yoan Moncada Cleared to Sign

For those not sure who this kid is, this guy is a 5 tool talent and most experts say if he were to be in the draft he would go #1 and a can't miss prospect. All he will cost a team is money, and lots of it! He has been described as a guy that an orginization is built around, a franchise type of player ala a Derek Jeter or Mike Trout if you will. He will get a huge signing bonus (30-40 million up front!) and then likely 1-2 years in the minors as he is only 19 but if he is really that good he might be up to the "show" sooner than projcted, who knows?

Been following him for quite awhile now and he would look so good in pinstripes for the next 20 years. It likely comes down to where he wants to play as a handful of teams will open the checkbook for him. The most likely place being the NYY and LA Dodgers based on history and marketability with endorsement deals as those 2 city's are #1 and #2 in that department.

If either the Sox or Yankees sign him, they will pay a 100% penalty on his contract since they both blew past the international spending allotment this year. Also, after June 15, neither team will be allowed to sign an international free agent for two years. So a $40 million deal will cost $80 for either team.

Yup.......... big big investment for a kid but they have that kind of $ to risk.

Simple fact: the landscape has changed. The Yankees can no longer bludgeon the rest of the league with their checkbook. They are all drowning in money. Baseball is a $9 billion industry. The "poorest" of the "poor" teams is turning a very healthy profit as the value of their franchises soar.

Oh, the Yankees negotiated the TV contracts with ESPN and Fox. I didn't know that.

No, but I know who he likes now. The team with the biggest offer. The Yankees do have one advantage. They need a 2b, a SS who can hit, a 1b. Lots of openings on the Yankees that neither the Dodgers or Red Sox have.

From a Yankee blog:
"Moncada is a can’t miss kid. Well, so was Billy Beane, Brien Taylor and Todd Van Poppel. This game chews up top prospects and spits them out.

First of all, once he gets cleared, the Yankees have to sign him. The Dodgers and Red Sox are interested too and guess what? They’ve got money too. The industry is flush with cash right now. Either of those teams could push their chips to the table. Plus, they each have Cuban players playing on their teams right now, which may give them a slight advantage.

The Yankees were supposed to have interest in prospects like Rusney Castillo, Yasmany Tomas and Yoan Lopez and all three ended up signing elsewhere. The Yankees went all in on the international free agent market, and Moncada can be the icing on that very expensive cake, but as I said, they’ll have competition."

Lets be real here, it is because of the Yankees and mainly because of King George and he being the pioneer that he was with signing star players to big money contracts, that baseball is the success that it is today, or at least a huge huge HUGE part of it. Each and every owner should have a picture of Steinbrenner above their bank vault doors. ;)

As far as Moncada, who knows what is gonna happen but the kind of $ he will get is pennies for the big money teams and worth the risk, it would not surprise me if he gets more than is predicted.

Congratulations, iggy. This is the single silliest post in all of your 8,313. In fact, it might be the silliest post in the 12 years of merb. Good work.

As much as I don't like an awful lot of he did, Bud Selig did a magnificent job of turning baseball into an economic powerhouse.

Yup, and they've since added Castillo, Betts, Ramirez, Sandoval, Porcello, Masterson, and Miley. What have the -31 Yankees added? Steven Drew. Oh Snap!!

This will take the WORLD BS AWARD for 2015 even this early in the year. Nothing coming could ever be as silly or so obviously baloney. Until the new team sharing setups the Yankees had far and away more access to money to spend than anyone else, as their fans here constantly boasted about. So Steinbrenner spent a lot more than any other team. DUH!!!

Silly to you must mean it's true, ;) (you were right smuler)

If you think that group of misfits is gonna all the sudden catapult the rouge hose from worst to first (minus a Jon Lester) then you ARE talking something silly!

Less than 3 weeks til Spring Training Boyzzz! :D

Or more likely until Sandoval eats his way to the DL. Either way he only shows up to play in the post season and the hose are likely not making that this year.
Actually, less than two weeks. Maybe three, however, until Tanaka's TJ surgery.
