Welcome to the Mecca Babs! and to the Centre of the Hockey Universe!!! Win here and you will own the city forever! Phaneuf will stay but Kessel is as good as gone most likely. Whatever Babcock/Shanahan decides, Leafs fans will put our faith in the dynamic duo!

THE GREAT MIKE BABCOCK IS COMING TO TORONTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heard that rumour a few times from pretty reliable sources and Toronto would LOVE that first round pick that Lou and Company have as of right now. It would take more than that to nab Kessel tho.

GREAT day in Hockey today! Simply GREAT!
We he be a NJ Devil ?

They have money, but not much of a fan base. Lots of empty seats in that arena.

Sure, Kovy fucked them. But they took a big gamble when they signed him to that huge deal at the time and got heavily criticized for it. So they kind of asked for it.

Kovy will likely be back in the league either next year or in two years, i predict. The KHL is struggling mightily financially and i predict an exodus of top players in the near future.

I think he would be a fantastic fit in NJ to be honest. But is Lou ready to give us their #1 pick in this years draft plus plus plus??? I heard they would like to give us their #1 pick next year and a package of prospects but that likely won't fly with Shanahan and definately not with Babcock.

To get Kessel, ANY TEAM will have to give at least one first round pick this year and a top prospect at the least.

Me thinks that Todd McLellan is kicking himself right now for not being more patient, and the Edmonton Oilers are doing cartwheels for signing him just in time!

Babcock will likely have some say on whether or not Kessel and Phaneuf should be traded. My guess is that he'd like to hold onto Phaneuf since he was the one who wanted him to come to Detroit the most back in March at the deadline. As for Kessel, the only way Toronto trades him is if they get a great offer for him. Same thing for Phaneuf. They simply won't give them away. Plus, Kessel has a no-trade contract and this may make moving him more difficult.

As a true fan of the game and not just a Leafs fan, I must truly admit the Leafs so far this "offseason" are the big winners (until the champion is crowned) No they did not get McDavid or Eichel but they are getting what would be a #1 pick in most draft years in one of either Hanifan/Strome/Marner plus they just got the best coach in the game and maybe one of the top 3 coaches ever in the NHL by the time he is finished, in Mike Babcock. If he wins in TO, he could go down as the best ever one day and a sure fire hall of famer (already)

Was he vastly underpaid?

I haven't looked up the numbers, but was told that there are currently teams out there (e.g. Buffalo, possibly Boston and Detroit) who would have paid him a lot more to sign with them once Babcock signed his huge deal.

Someone joked on TSN that Claude Julien, who signed an extension last season, must currently be begging the Bruins to fire him.

Yes for sure and for the record i am totally fine in Keeping "The Thrill" but if they do that, Babcock will need to light a fire in him to make him that superstar that he is capable of being. Not really Kessel's fault tho, every superstar needs star talent around them to be the best, something Kessel has never had, YET!

I think Phaneuf likely stays now also but who really knows. The rebuild at best will take 2-3 years and by then Dion will be 32? 33? The time might be now to trade him for max value, same with Kessel.

I am a team first guy so whatever the Dynamic Duo of Shanahan/Babcock decides, i will support!

Thanks for all the info Mr. Holliday! As usual you are a step ahead of everyone around here. I would  if Babcock snubs detroit for Buffalo.

Also I like that Shanahan is not going crazy to sign Babs. I think he is the wrong guy to lead the rebuild in TO. Whats great is that he wont be signing in Montreal either.
you are happy shanahan pays 50 million for the wrong coach

Congrats to Leafs nation, finally some good news. They will definitely be a well coached team next year. Still have a lot of work to do . This signing changes things, player free agents might consider Toronto now. Good luck!
