I wonder what Thierry Henry's role is; it's funny to see him "dressing down" like this as Martinez' #2 ...

Indeed, I figure if Thierry Henry was ready to manage a top team he would've been the successor to Arsene Wenger at Arsenal where he had his biggest success. Now, if he can help Martinez devise a game plan for Belgium to beat France next week and win the WC, he will likely become a hot coaching candidate at major clubs. Didier Deschamps is in his prime and a perfect fit as the coach of the French national team.

My score:
Uruguay 1 - France 2 = 1 point
Brazil 1 - Belgium 2 = 3 point
Sweden 0 - England 1 = 1 point
Russia 0 - Croatia 3 = 1 point

6 points, who beats me?

My take for the semis:
France 2 - Belgium 1
England 2 - Croatia 0

Since I did not predict any scores, but only the quarter final winners, I get 4points.

So semi-finals here goes:
France 3 - Belgium 2
England 3 - Croatia 0

Sharkman,

No pick for the France - England final you have projected? Are you undecided? You can’t wait to see what happens in the semifinals, that gives you an unfair advantage over those who have already picked the score of the France - England final. If it’s that hard to pick, I would suggest that you either flip a coin or else ask the first random person you see on the street to make the pick for you.

Tiga,

Same thing. No hedging of bets.

EB, I thought we were going 1 round at a time? I think we should all refrain from picking the finals winner until the teams are known!

Also there is the consolation match for 3rd place...what do we do about that match???

I am very relieved that Croatia won that game because I would not have been able to take watching the Russians play another game in this tournament. However, you have to say that their strategy of playing for penalty kicks worked for two straight knockout games. The problem is that if you play for PKs you have to win PKs, and they could not execute on that part of the strategy.

Semifinals:

France 3, Belgium 2
England 2, Croatia 1

Final:

France 3, England 1 - France wins Battle of Waterloo rematch; over 200 years later, France finally avenges their last major defeat by the British.

Waterloo is in Belgium and the World Cup will stand there for a while ;)

Indeed the battle did occur in what is modern day Belgium, although at the time that land was part of the United Kingdom of Netherlands. The actual battlefield is 10 miles south of Brussels.

Of the Battle of Waterloo, the Duke Of Wellington famously said, “It has been a damned serious business... Blucher and I have lost 30,000 men. It has been a damned nice thing — the nearest run thing you ever saw in your life. ... By God! I don't think it would have been done if I had not been there.”

Historians have interpreted the Duke’s comments to mean that it was a VERY close battle and every man he had was needed to emerge victorious. It was of course, famously, the end of the road for Napoleon who abdicated 4 days later and was then exiled, never to fight again.
