I was not all that impressed with Croatia against Russia. The first Russian goal was the result of a 1 on 4 effort by Chersayev, and made the Croatian defense look very beatable, if not Swiss Cheese. Russia also successfully roughed up Modric, who looked gunshy of contact later in the game and was not playing the ball aggressively. Croatia was definitely the better team than Russia, yet their victory was not convincing. England certainly beat a better Swedish team with more flair than Croatia showed against Russia. If Croatia is the more talented team than England they will need to show it, because they didn't in the quarterfinals.

Strange no one is picking Croatia to win it, they have most of their players playing in the best teams in Europe, Real, Barcelona, Juventus.
Their goaltender also seems to be invincible when it comes to penalty shoot outs.

I am pulling for this under dog, and am amazed that such small nations as Croatia and Belgium can produce such star studded and fabulous teams.
They both play an attacking technical style of football that is a pleasure to watch.

I still think France will prevail in the end but would love to see either Croatia or Belgium win it.

Yes, but ... Croatia look exhausted, both physically and mentally, after two games going to extra time and pentalties; some of those guys are getting on in years and showed it against Russia. England look younger, fresher; it's a toss-up for me.

Nice ... lol.

How about this one:

https://youtu.be/hJ9-3s7KU_c

Both the Abba and BeeGees songs mention Napoleon by name. I never fully appreciated the significance of Napoleon historically speaking until I went to law school and learned that the laws of many states and nations are either expressly or partly based on the Napoleonic Code (Louisiana and the Dominican Republic, for example). If you do any legal research on the laws of those jurisdictions, you need to understand the Napoleonic Code.

Who is playing today, lol?

If the Belgium front three play like they did against Brazil in the first half then they look unbeatable.

France's best hope is using it's speed against a slow Belgium defence. They tired against Brazil, which explains in part why the Brazilians created so many chances towards the end. Griez, Mbappe, Dembele ... need to run at them ceaselessly.

3 - 2 Belgium

Re-Seeding

Sharkman earlier in this thread mentioned possible or likely rule changes due to what has happened in this World Cup, and I would like another one to happen: re-seed the teams once they make it to the semifinals. There is no way France and Belgium should be playing each other. France (1 seed) should be playing Croatia (4 seed) and Belgium (2 seed) should be playing England (3 seed). The France-Belgium match is effectively the championship final. The third place game is going to be bullshit, because the loser of France-Belgium should not be playing in it.

I thought from the very beginning of the knockout stage that the upper half of the bracket was unfairly top heavy and it has proven to be the case. Some might contend that re-seeding, if it happens, should happen at the round of 16. I would not be opposed to that either, although it would be an admission that we cannot trust the Group pairings for round robin play. I think the semifinals offer the best chance to plausibly reseed teams based on current and cumulative world rank.

Don't forget Meunier's suspension... Belgium won't have it easy against France.

Is there any other significant suspension for the semis?

EB, I simply mentioned that thus far we have been making our pics on a per round basis, and not bundling the Final 4 with the Final 2. I do not recall what the rule is and I am not suggesting any rule changes if there are any!

I simply want to know if we are picking round by round, and if so then the picks for the Final 2 should wait until the end.

Calling it as I see it for the semis...
France-Belgium: who's got the edge?

Frontline: Belgium
Midfield: France
Backline: Belgium
GK: Belgium
Result: Belgium 3 France 2

England-Croatia: who's got the edge?
Frontline: England
Midfield: Croatia
Backline: England
GK: Croatia
Result: Croatia 2 England 1

Indeed the battle did occur in what is modern day Belgium, although at the time that land was part of the United Kingdom of Netherlands. The actual battlefield is 10 miles south of Brussels.

Of the Battle of Waterloo, the Duke Of Wellington famously said, “It has been a damned serious business... Blucher and I have lost 30,000 men. It has been a damned nice thing — the nearest run thing you ever saw in your life. ... By God! I don't think it would have been done if I had not been there.”

Historians have interpreted the Duke’s comments to mean that it was a VERY close battle and every man he had was needed to emerge victorious. It was of course, famously, the end of the road for Napoleon who abdicated 4 days later and was then exiled, never to fight again.

You are right I visited the battlefields on a school trip from Italy and I was impressed how this place is so huge in a plat pays where there are people everywhere

I went there, yes just outside of Bruxels.
You probably know that the mountain on the battlefield you saw is made out of the ruins of the Napoleonic army. They made a huge hill out of guns, canons and so-on, stuff left by the French.
On the top of the hill is a sculpture of an ailing, dying lion, symbolizing Napoleons demise.

Interesting statistic,

Of the 4 teams left in the semi finals almost 50% of the players play their football in the English leagues, 40 players, 12-12 in the Spanish and French league, 9 in the German, and Croatia, Belgium, and China have two each.

The most players are from Tottenham 9, Man city and Man United, 7-7, Chelsea has 5 Liverpool 4.

Makes sense. English Premier League are only English in name. It’s really a global league with foreign players making up the majority of rosters at the top tier teams. Good prep for WC tournament.

As per the revenue data presented in Post #305...

The English Premier League is tops in all of Europe with almost double the revenue of its closest rival league. As a result, it draws the best players and the players get paid top $$$.

Sharkman, Versaute, Sam 21, EagerBeaver and anyone else who might be interested, the new Premier League season begins on Aug. 10.

The new edition of Fantasy Premier League is live as of last week. I've created a private league, FPL MERB in addition to the universal public league that you are a part of just by signing up.

https://fantasy.premierleague.com/a/home

Just sign-up to FPL and pick your players to select your team, then go to the "Leauges" tab and click on "Create and Join A Leauge" then "Join a league" then "Join a private league" and under "Private League Code" enter: 259528-53537

It's a little geeky but a lot of fun, what do you say?
