EB you got 7 nationalities? That would surprise the shit out of me...

Cheers,

For world cup purposes, yes: USA (birthplace) plus 5 European countries (through parental residence or birth) plus one Middle Eastern country (mother is dual citizen). I could argue for one other country where my mother lived and where she got pregnant with me, which is in the Caribbean (according to residents there I spoke to). Which would be 8 if that argument was successful. Of the 8 I would only play for the USA.

Since I have no soccer talent and am over the hill anyway, they are all moot arguments.

It's the birthplace of mother/father/grand-mother/grand-father that is important.

Eligibility is:
a) He was born on the territory of the relevant association;
b) His biological mother or biological father was born on the territory of the relevant association;
c) His grandmother or grandfather was born on the territory of the relevant association;
d) He has lived continuously for at least five years after reaching the age of 18 on the territory of the relevant association.

Is it too open? Yes if you ask me. Do I care? No not at all. I like football much more then patriotism.

Cheers,

Wow, so much nonsense on this thread, not least my own, lol ...

... Spain to hold possession, boring their opposition into submission, grinding-out 1-0 victories all the way to the final, when they lose to Brazil 0-3.

Can't defend the FIFA ranking system, it's long been the target of much mockery, and just a cursory look at the current rankings has a number of idiosyncrasies jumping-out at me, as well, most obviously Poland at #6 and Switzerland at #8. Sure Poland made the WC, and even have one of the world's best strikers, Robert Lewandowski, but they're not that good, even losing a home friendly to Nigeria, who are much better than #52, on the weekend.

Apparently the system is based on results over the last four years, both competitive and friendly, with more recent results being weighted more heavily, and, I think, regardless of the quality of the opponent.

I'm not sure what you guys are talking about. Strength of league and quality of opponents do count in the FIFA rankings in addition to the more obvious match result and whether it's a friendly or a WC match. See link below for the algorithm to derive rankings. For all its flaws, I'm not sure there is a better alternative out there, can you? For me, the top 12 ranked teams make sense. Poland is more than just Lewandowski. They have some quality players on defense who are good enough to play in the Bundelisga 1st league.

I'm sure you're right about the algorithm, Versaute, but Spain and Poland are tied on exactly the same points and that just doesn't pass the smell test, does it? The Spain roster is, afterall, considerably better than "good enough to play in the Bundesliga."

Sam, friendlies are important, at least in the run-up to major tournaments. It's not like the club game. National teams have relatively little time to prepare and coalesce as something greater than a collection of individuals. Several of the friendlies this weekend were very competitive, especially Germany/Spain, which, though not available to me, was apparently quite an impressive match. I had to be content with France/Colombia, also fun, but for different reasons, lol ...

Friendlies leading to the mundial is where many player wants to show they should be part of starting line up! So yes they are great games.

A lot of WC games are boring, especially at the group stage with so many mediocre teams trying to nul the group behemoth, and each other, into draws. Safety first, etc. It's going to be even worse when they go to 48 teams, the greedy bastards .... the last tournament I really enjoyed was Euro 2008 when I think it was just 16 teams. Still, there's always a stunner or two, even in a bloated tournament like the WC ....

Russia were mostly poor at home against Brazil on the weekend. I watched much of the game. It was almost Brazil '70 for about 20 mins. in the second half, then they turned off, allowing chances to the Russians. I can go either way on a Neymar-less Brazil. The attack is outstanding even without him. Love Coutinho. Some great defensive cover in midfield and their keeper is supposed to be outstanding. Questions about the back four, though ... especially Dani Alves. Looks like I'm gonna miss the friendly today with Germany.

To bad Canada is not there,first international soccer game 1885 the USA and Canada played their first game of football or soccer in Newark and ended with Canada winning 1-0,but Footy or soccer was played by the American Natives 1620 In North America, native American Indians Native American tribes, primarily the Algonkin and Powhatan tribes playing a variation of the sport known as pasuckuakohowog,Pasuckuakohowog literally meaning "kicking ball sport" the ball representing the sun god of fertility celebrating life, it was reported to be played on fields a half mile in diameter and as long as nearly a mile.Teams would have nearly 100 people,Pasuckuakohowog which literally translates to "they gather to play ball with the foot.

1865-1876
Soccer was initiated as an organized college sport in the USA in the years following the Civil War. Princeton and Rutgers Universities engaged in the first intercollegiate soccer match Nov. 6, 1876, in New Brunswick, N.J. Rutgers won the match 6-4. The game was more similar to both rugby and soccer than gridiron football.

1600 In Alaska and Canada the native Inuit played a game called aqsaqtuk on ice, using balls stuffed with grass, caribou hair, and moss. the ball representing the round sun the stars and the planets celebrating mother earth, it was reported to be played on fields a half mile in diameter and as long , One legend tells of two villages playing football against each other for days with goals 10 miles apart...yup Natives or first nations people first played the beautiful game here in Canada.

http://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/23402874/world-cup-rank-espn-fc#!lionelmessi

Notable:

- Messi and Ronaldo still 1-2
- no Germans (or fake Germans from other countries) in the top 10
- 2 Belgians in the top 10
- Harry Kane at #5, top age 25 or under player in World
- I did not count but seems like France has the most top 50 players. They have a ton of good guys.

Some strange players in that ranking, and some leftovers for sure. But hey it's always the case in such ranking.

Good news......Canada will co-host 2026 FIFA World Cup with U.S. and Mexico. Montréal, Toronto and Edmonton are Canadian host cities. Very very good news for soccer fans.

Yes that is a great news for soccer in America. Strange that toronto game will be played at smaller BMO field venue. Montreal will have to bring real turf to Montreal Stadium, at least for the first time. It's a long run but I will really try to go to some games in Mexico City :)

Although Brazil is listed as the favorite by ESPN, I also think France is a very dangerous team with extreme depth of talent. France can easily win this World Cup. I see Brazil, France and Germany as the 3 biggest threats, and would be shocked if the final has none of those 3 teams.
