I booked a trip to Montreal for the end of June and just discovered I'll be in town for Canada day. Does anyone know how it impacts places being open? Since the holiday falls on a Monday, will Sunday night be like a Friday/Saturday since people don't work the next day? Or will places be closed/short staffed because people are taking a break?

Canada Day is not a big celebration in Montréal, our national holiday being on June 24th (St-Jean-Baptiste) just a week before! There are some shows and gatherings but all the action is happening on June 24th, which is celebrated everywhere in the province. July 1st is known as "moving day" though; leases tend to start and end on July 1st. Most businesses are closed on the 1st, but it shouldn't impact the whole weekend (unless your favourite provider is moving that day)! I guess that you will have more fun than not.

Nation within a nation and something.
Something that distinguished from other area in the greyish Canada/USA
I assisted to a Victoria Day celebration with firecrackers In Ontario. Got a strange feeling…I told myself if they can cheer royalty, why not we could celebrate Patriotes who risk their lives for equality (not liberty)…even if they lost. But this isn’t quite celebrated at least for now.

The whole monarchy thing is just as stupid, yes.

Canada Day in Montreal may not elicit much excitement compared to other holidays, such as St. Jean Baptiste, which holds greater significance in the city.

One positive aspect, as you mentioned, is that it falls on a Monday, providing a long weekend for celebrations. Most businesses and malls are closed, but restaurants and nightlife establishments remain open. It may not be worth going out of your way to visit Montreal specifically for Canada Day.

The Grand Prix event is a notable exception to the city's usual lack of excitement for visitors, apart from its reputation in the sex industry. You may find cities like Toronto and Ottawa to be more vibrant cities than Montreal for Canada Day.

Considering that Monday is a holiday, Sunday night can offer a more exciting vibe compared to a typical Friday or Saturday. The anticipation of a day off on Monday adds an extra layer of energy to the evening, making it feel like a special occasion where people can fully enjoy themselves without the worry of work the next day.

It is important to consider that many individuals are currently traveling abroad for vacation.

July 1st is known in Quebec as national moving day. Don't expect any celebration but most restaurants and bars will still be open. Anything government (museums, banks) as well as most stores will be closed.
