Do you feel like the world is more divided today compared to the past?

It’s pretty easy to look around and feel like there’s a ton of tension in the world right now (whether it’s politics, social issues, or even just everyday stuff). A lot of people say that the divide between different groups, whether it’s political views, cultural differences, or social class, has definitely gotten worse over the years. Then again, some argue that things have always been divided, but perhaps we just notice it more because of the internet and social media.

What do you think has caused this divide?
Is it the way we communicate now?
Selective listening?
Are our values changing? (People can change, especially with age/experience)
Or is it something else entirely?

Have at it!

It's all because of smartphones. And AI. People don't talk to each other any more. They talk to their phone, and AI programs.
True!!!
It’s crazy how people are duped / provoked into feeling real sentiments when watching AI videos or texts. It angers me to the core. AI has lots to do with it nowadays. People rely on AI a lot. Can’t even formulate proper sentences without using it daily. Lmao.

I find politics in general has gone to the extreme. Take for example the Trudeau Liberals, totally corrupt, woke to the max, cares more for foreigners then Canadians, and caters to the wealthy. We have not had a centred political leader in a long while. Mulroney was an example of a leader who was able to unify the country and so was Jean Chretien. Covid caused even more divide. We had ppl that wanted the mandates then others that were against it.

Yes there’s extremes on all sides of this clown show.
And yeah don’t get me started on the conspiracies (that always end up being true in the end :p)

I will say this: COVID and the lockdowns really fueled mental health issues. People were pushed to the brink. Nothing has been the same since IMO.

And not just that covid lockdowns created a lot of inflation either by covid benefits or greed. Businesses are under the covid mentality that they can keep on jacking up their prices.

Society, societies have always been polarized (to simplify). Increased availability of information with different platforms and almost instantaneous has made it easier for people to not "feel alone" in their position and ideas.
Drawback of that increased "communication" is for example the increase of reactions with overflow of information push. This is leading to less space and time to digest and go out of your own bubble. Part of the way those platforms work is feeding you with similar interests and just comforting you in your thinking instead of enabling critical thinking which should be hearing different opinions.
Ironically people think that we communicate better but it's kind of doing the opposite.

Polarization has definitely increased, even more so in the US than in Canada. The trigger was social media and its algorithms, which created these infamous echo chambers that many people walked into. Furthermore as people retreated more and more in the digital sphere (as pointed out by @EagerBeaver ) less in-person social contacts meant less opportunities to exchange ideas in a civil manner (social media, of course, fosters uncivil discourse). These platforms are also excellent at generating anger and outrage, which fuel polarization (i.e. us vs. them). One of these long running polls in the US asks people if they would mary someone of the opposite political party, and the % of yes has never been so low. That's a pretty revealing indicator (feel free to fact check this one as I don't have the exact numbers at hand). Trump and his acolytes did not create this polarized environment but exploited it, as populists do. During the pandemic, it became mainstream media's turn to contribute to this polarization, as people who were critical of the official discourse were virtually ignored or labeled as conspiracy theorists. Once it became clear that the virus might have indeed escaped from the Wuhan lab, and that it was clearly NOT a conspiracy theory, it was too late. The Left, especially the woke left, is certainly not blameless. By policing thought, refusing to engage their ideological adversaries in rational debate, and almost criminalizing dissent, they went against some of the core tenets of modern democratic societies that date back to the Enlightenment age. Fortunately they have lost a lot of their cultural influence. One of the first lessons my dad taught me when I was in school was to read an equal amount of material I agree with an disagree with, and then to make my own opinion. This requires a conscious effort and can still done by consulting various media outlets, outside of social media. This is a principle I still apply to this day. (Disclaimer: no AI was used in writing this text).

Yes!! Back to common sense and logical debates without screaming and labeling people every “-ist” and “-phobe” in the book simply because they don’t agree lmaooooo.

Your papa is a good egg! Very well said, couldn’t agree more! This is exactly what I was taught growing up before schools turned into indoctrination camps, punishing students for questioning things. A complete brainwashing of the masses. Even some adults struggle with it now, as if using proper discernment and logical thinking has become a thing of the past…
