Downtown hotels with free internet

Since internet it a MUST for me, thought it would be useful to put together a list of DT hotels that you do not have to pay a $15-20 surcharge for internet. It's not much but I factor it in to where I stay.

Free internet - Residence Inn on Peel, Delta Hotel (deluxe room)

Pay extra for internet - Sofitel, Delta Hotel (regular room)

The Hyatt offered free wireless internet in the businessmens lounge only...which consisted of 4 chairs and lots of foot traffic to see what sites your surfing. Dont know if they still offer this anymore since its been years since ive been there.

Although not really downtown (actually borders Montreal and Westmount), the Residence Inn Marriott Montreal Westmount (on Lincoln) also has free internet (wired). It is also walking distance to the downtown core (2 or 3 metro stop distances).

Thanks Daringly, et al. I was just this moment looking for a cheaper alternative to my Hotel Godin (which I like, but which has changed hands and is finally getting too expensive for me. (parking is extra internet is extra, etc. etc.). I just booked three nights at Hotel de la Montagne, and I got the third night for $100, so not too bad. By the way, as an American, can I get all these insanely high hotel taxes back at customs? or better yet by mail? Someone told me I could, but that sounded too good to be true (it also would mean that I have already squandered hundreds or even thousands by not doing so for the past 18 months!)

The Holiday Inn select in Chinatown offers free wireless internet.

Someone also mentioned that he got wireless at the Vogue...wonder if he logged onto the Montagne's wireless system?

Sorry to go off-topic, but sorry Urbanite, not anymore. The Canadian government stopped offering the GST rebate last September.

Thanks CK_NJ, it's actually fine, I didn't relish the idea of more paperwork, or a longer delay at the border, but nonetheless I couldn't just ignore what amounts to probably $150-$200 per visit. But alas, it must remain in Canada. Oh well.

Umm, that would be me.

As I was setting up my laptop, prior to plugging it into the Vogue's system, it "found" a connection. I checked in on a Friday and the connection wasn't great. By Friday evening and all weekend, I got a great connection.

There were no passwords or security. I assumed it was a small company operating in a nearby building and when they closed for the weekend, their internet traffic stopped clogging up my reception! For what its worth, I was in a room facing the HDLM.

As in all things, YMMV... so I can't guarantee it'll work for you too.

As little sense as it makes, the general rule is that fancy hotels charge extra for Internet access, and economy hotels give it for free.

You need an access code to get free internet at the HDM. Two years ago, i stayed at the Vogue (2nd floor) and was able to find an unsecured wireless connection in the area. The next time i stayed there (last floor where the suites are), i couldn't get anything, so i had to pay in order to use the hotel's ADSL connection. So maybe it depends if your room is located on a lower floor & on a certain side of the building in order to get the unsecured wireless connections in the area.

My very favorite, Hotel De La Montagne does have free wireless internet.

They were fully booked at end of trip so had to walk across street to The Loews Vogue. Still had HDLM password and got their connection from my Vogue room facing Montagne. But as I was typing in password I lost HDLM connection.

Was disappointed Vogue charges $14.95 for every 24 hours since the website says free internet access. When I complained politely at front desk they pointed to two computers in lobby with "free internet access". I now know to look for the word "wireless" in advertisements.

When I was at Vogue again last week I got unsecure Wi-Fi for my new iPhone so was happy.

I think it depends on the alignment of the sun, stars, and moon....

The HDLM has free wireless internet, but as has been described elsewhere on the Board, the service is very crappy and you get what you pay for, which is nothing. When I was last here in April, I used Doc Holliday's lap top and the service was constantly crapping out during the critical late afternoon hours when typically you are calling and trying to set something up with an agency.

Sometimes in this world you can get something for nothing, but more often than not, you get nothing for nothing. The HDLM can take their free Internet service and stick it up their manager's ass. I will walk around the block and pay $10 for 3 hours at the Stanley Cybercafe, while all of you guys who think you got a great deal struggle to make a connection. I never had my connection crap out at the Stanley Cybercafe or at any of the Battlenet Cybercafes.

The Vogue does indeed have free internet access in the form of 2 computers in a business center on the far left hand side and back wall as you enter the lobby (the door to the business center is in the corner). I have used their free Internet which is very good, but they only have 2 monitors and they are often in use so sometimes you have to wait.

One time when my internet crapped out at Residence Inn, I parked my car outside of Starbucks on St. Catherine to use their internet.

Where exactly is Stanley Cybercafe, EB? Don't just say on Stanley. lol
