Was thinking of making a quick visit and remembered that my passport expired a couple months ago. I don't want to go through the expense and hassle of an expedited passport, so I plan to go get an enhanced driver's license (NY). Has anyone used one for border crossings, and if so are they treated with the same weight as a passport, or do they subject you to more hassle?

My buddy has a EDL and Mod 11 is totally correct about them working for land travel into Canada only. But it also does work as good as a passport when crossing by land, either way your going to get some agents who will be cool, nice and just let you thru with the basic questions, on the other hand you will get the opposite with other agents who will send you inside for further questioning whether you have a Edl OR a passport.

drivers license

hello, your drivers license is good for land only, and is respected as a passport, if you have demerit points accumulated on your drivers license, it will be cheaper to get a passport, due to the crooked saaq and all the other dumb quebec laws, example mine costed 310$, demerit point on a professional drivers license, and all the bullshit tickets i have got, so check your drivers abstract before doing the move, thank you and have a nice day, i hope i could help you save a couple of $$$$$$$$$$$

i have a clean driving record and always drive to MTL since I am not that far away. I am not worried about cost; what I am a bit worried about is getting sweated at the border. I don't have anything to hide, but I was given a big hassle once even though I did have a passport (made the mistake of coming in by Greyhound). I just didn't know if it's more of a hassle to use ab EDL. I stupidly let my passport expire, and I can get the enhanced license much quicker than a passport. I'll probably go ahead and get a passport too, but I don't want to wait six or eight weeks to visit.

I use it all the time when I drive across the border. No hassle at all. It's my understanding that its only limitation is air travel. It is supposed to be valid by land and sea, you can check the NY DMV website to confirm.

I don't know how they proceed in NY state but I have a Quebec one and it still took over a month to get after I applied because they do a security check (on both sides of the border) and an in person i.d. verification before it's issued.

I've only used it a couple of times but it went very well. In fact I take it out of it's security cover and place it in my shirt pocket as I cue in line approaching the booth. By the time my turn arrives, the border agent has already scanned it and knows who I am before I open my mouth.
