There are reasons why people become SP's, but somehow that never gets discussed... And I get it because that would ruin the magic. But if you don't want to talk about that, don't complain about our rates.
I am not sure how the reason for being an SP relates to rates. However, since I am interested in an SP more as a person than just a body—for the hour together—the why is of interest to me.
In the US, the propaganda of the anti-sexwork crowd gets political attention and our harmful laws since they argue that no woman in her right mind would be a sexworker unless abused or has some terrible emotional issue to choose such an immoral profession.
A similar argument was made in Ontario in Canada v. Bedford, invalidating the original law against living of avails and incalls (outcall was long legal). The lower Ontario Court, in one of the longest rulings in history (like 150 pages - the female judge - I wrote extensively about it at the time,) strongly rejected these "friend of the court" briefs from mostly US anti-sexwork groups. The crown appealed and the Supreme Court of Canada affirmed 9-0. Then Canada passed C36 for which a number of cases have been lost (in favor of an escort agency etc) from arrests in smaller cities and seems the Crown hasn't appealed.
Many years ago, when I had about 1000 folks on my Phoenix Private email list, a professor at the Univ of Arizona in Tucson contacted me seeking an escort to talk to her class - forget the topic of the class. I found an escort willing to travel if I would go with her and we rode down (actually up) to Tucson. It is a very friendly mix of genders, with a smaller class of maybe 15. We intended to show escorting in a positive light, fighting all the raids and arrests. I followed many court cases and reported on them. Agencies and the famous Phoenix Goddess Temple were charged with criminal enterprise like the Mafia and I heard judges give 'Donald Advicement" of up to 100 years in prison if they didn't take a plea deal if convicted (worse than murder because every time they traced money it was a new money laundering felony and would add up years if all counts consecutive). Most pled to felonies and probation. Tracy head of the Goddess Temple refused to plea, her bail was initially set at $2m, convicted and served 4 years in prison. Her crime was allowing hand jobs in their goddess ceremonies. I attended many of the hearings over 4 years, and once, when I hadn't been there for some break, the judge said to me, "We missed you!" !!
I had over 250 detailed reports on proceedings going to lawyers and friendly folks all over the US and many escorts and those following the case from my reports. Many famous folks testified for the defense, including Huf, the now deceased NV brother and the famous owner (the very nice guy with ties to Phoenix I had dinner with), the founder of the Inst of Advanced Sexuality, who testified the military had him provide prostitutes from Isreal for the Navy! He was standing next to me in a break when he got the call from the Dept of Defense ordering him to get immediately to the airport where a plane was waiting to fly him back to his home state of NV. Interesting times. Also, many famous activists like Annie Sprinkle, who is very supportive on my private list, testified and many other famous pro-sex activists in the US
Sorry for the diversion. I do that a lot. Back to the Univ of AZ class:
There were lots of good questions, but towards the end, I was asked why she chose to become an escort. To my surprise and probably the prof and class, she talked about abuse growing up and all sorts of emotional issues.... just like the anti-sexworkers said.
I know many escorts that claim they do it because they enjoy men and sex and of course, the money. But is that the fantasy they want us to think?
I got to know a few escorts well long ago in Phoenix and with their friends. I am 100% convinced they were doing it for the "right" reasons and did enjoy their work not JUST the money. But I always wonder about that with escorts etc I meet. WIth our new repressive AZ State laws the women I knew have retired or moved to saver cities and have not met any in Phoenix in about 10 years. Along with a few other contact groups that warned against bad clients and many other safety-related concerns, shut down after AZ (with the help of Ms McCain - like the wife of a famous US Senator) passed a law that even assisting or promoting was a felony in AZ.
