Polarizing Alaska governor Palin steps down

Palin could not even finish her one term in office

SAN FRANCISCO - With questions swirling about her next move, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin steps down Sunday after bursting into the U.S. political spotlight last year as John McCain's presidential running mate.

The Republican Party lightning rod has been touted as a potential adversary for President Barack Obama in 2012, but with continued ethics probes, outsized legal bills, and growing doubts about her ability to govern dogging her, it is unclear if her farewell is a precursor to a Washington career or a political finale.

Palin, 45, has been participating in an annual series of picnics in her hometown of Wasilla since Friday, when she told a crowd of more than 1,000 she was grateful for the backing she has received from Alaskans amid mounting pressure from critics after she abruptly announced her resignation on July 3.

"This is my last time to speak to the Valley community as your governor," said Palin, clad in jeans and a red football sweatshirt before serving hotdogs and signing autographs, according to the Anchorage Daily News.

"I appreciate the support you have shown me and my family. I love you, and God bless America."

Palin attended a picnic in Alaska's largest city Anchorage on Saturday, before a final picnic in Fairbanks on Sunday when she hands over the reins of the state to Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell, the newspaper reported.

Palin left Friday's event without talking to reporters, leaving unanswered the questions about her future.

But she told The Washington Post in a written statement she was not leaving because of any particular ethics complaint and was determined to fight government waste.

"I will take the battle nationally and I won't shy away from challenging the powerful, the entrenched, the corrupt and anyone standing in the way of getting our country back on the right track," Palin wrote.

Some two dozen ethics complaints have been filed against Palin and while she has cast herself as an anti-corruption star she was found to have violated state ethics rules governing public officials.

Palin has said she owes more than half a million dollars in legal fees stemming from what she has described as the "political absurdity" of the ethics complaints.

Her supporters set up a fund to help defray her legal costs, but an independent investigator's preliminary report found that Palin may have violated state ethics laws by allowing such a fund to assist her, according to Alaska news reports.

The governor's resignation — a move she said was in the best interests of Alaska — with 18 months remaining in her first term has fueled speculation of a possible 2012 White House bid.

But new poll figures released in recent days show most Americans do not see her in a positive light and cast doubt on her governing skills.

Fifty-three per cent of Americans have an unfavorable view of Palin, with only 40 per cent seeing her in positive terms — her lowest approval rating since McCain tapped her as his running mate, according to the Washington Post-ABC News poll released Friday.

Potentially troubling for Palin if she decides to run for national office, 57 per cent of poll respondents said she does not understand complex issues, with 37 per cent saying she does.

Fifty-four per cent told the pollsters the outgoing Alaska governor was not a strong leader while only 40 per cent said that she was.

"I don't think that she is cut out to be on the national stage," Rick Buila, a finance worker from Sharonville, Ohio, who voted for the McCain-Palin ticket last November, told The Post.

Doc, why would you introduce such a title, Goodbye to the Wicked Witch of Alaska? Whether you agree with her or not, I think at the very least, she deserves some form of respect. She did get elected more than once, which means either 2 things;

1. All the people in Alaska are stupid
2. Maybe she did do good things, and in return, her constituency returned the favor by allowing her to keep her job, as their representatives

Using such a title and degrading her doesn't seem fair. It takes courage to put yourself in the public spotlight and in politics, especially if you're a woman. It takes courage to say, it's enough, and I want to stand up and make a better world, hence why certain courageous people come forward and put themselves at the mercy of their electors, and the media. It's not easy, because they tend to drag their family in their quest to help their neighbours (Canadian spelling. In the US, it's neighbors).

Bottom line? Let's give these people a little slack and appreciate what they're trying to do, whether one agrees with them or not, whether misguided or not. Personal attacks only keeps people away from executing on a some vague thought of helping their fellow friends in an effort to make this world a better place for all. Personal attacks only keeps potential good people from coming forward, because they'll internally say, why should I bother?

Makes sense?

Looks to me like "what she's trying to do" is quit the job the people of Alaska hired her to do so that she can go write a book and do a speaking tour. IF she cared so much about her constituents, she would have stayed and done her job for them. Truth is they are lucky she's leaving...

I hope she does say "why should I bother"! And, I hope she doesn't bother.... Thinking of Sarah Palin as a potential president of the US gives me a sick feeling in my stomach.

Ben, we're talking about 2 different things here. I am saying we should not put anyone down who intends to serve and especially not attack them personally, while your saying she doesn't deserve to serve or be in politics.

Let the people determine that. She will have her day in court. It's not my job or your job to decide who should serve or not, and attacking anyone personally, whether we agree with them or not, does nothing but scare off potential stars, who we don't know about, because they'll say to themselves, why should I even consider such a venture. In order to change the quality of our leaders, this culture of personal attacks needs to change. If not, we'll always get mediocre leaders at best, and always scare away any potential political newbie, into even considering this profession.

Another way to look at Alaska is its nearly 2/3 the size of the lower 48 states and about 100,000 square miles bigger than Quebec. It is a huge place.

In that sense its a bit like Canada: a huge country geographically with the population of California.

Hello all,

Actually Alaska ( 586,412 square miles ) is only about 1/5 ( 20%) the size of the Lower 48 ( 2,944,570 ), very far from 2/3 (67%). And, Quebec ( 594,860 square miles ) is larger. The population and inhabited land area is smaller than Rhode Island. Not sure why all this matters anyway.

Doc, why would you introduce such a title, Goodbye to the Wicked Witch of Alaska? Whether you agree with her or not, I think at the very least, she deserves some form of respect. She did get elected more than once, which means either 2 things;

Either Doc is off his meds again ( just joking ), or he doesn't respect her like I and millions of others don't. But I agree with Trenus...a little bit.

If Palin can't handle the pressure of being the Republican governor in a hugely Republican state then where does she get off thinking she is qualified to handle the pressure of being President when the constituent and media challenges would be far greater. She never was much more than some superficial Conservative pop star beyond Alaska. If there was any integrity in her or her word she would do her duty as she was sworn to the end of the term...unless there are concerns with "issues" too distracting that prevent her from doing her job.

...not to mention dragging one's family into the public eye.

This is true Trenus, unless the parent/candidate uses the family as an example for her political position. If any party wants to promote a mantra of "family values", and point to their own families as examples, then they make their family an object of scrutiny before anyone else does. You can't justifiably say leave my family alone while pointing to them as examples every family should be for the purpose of political points, especially when having children out of wedlock is against a very key component of the family values you are trying to promote. If anyone dragged the "family into the public eye" it was her.

Adieu Sarah,

Lanum, I know she only got elected once as Governor. I was speaking in general in terms of her first being elected locally, then making the jump for the Governership. Bottom line, her electors, whether we agree with them or not, decided to hire her, and we should respect anyone who puts their name forward.

Attack the person on the issues, that's fine, but not personally. It doesn't help the debate in terms of understanding the issues and it certainly doesn't help democracy, because qualified people may choose to never come forward, because of this culture of personal attacks, not to mention dragging one's family into the public eye.

The only interests Sarah Palin was interested in serving were her own. If she was the best that Alaska could choose either the people up there really don't give a damn or they didn't have any better to choose from. I have absolutely no respect for her and the way she dragged her underage pregnant daughter and the kid who knocked her up into the public spotlight.

I totally agree with BD's post. Thinking of her as President of the US doesn't only give me a sick feeling in my stomach, it scares the hell out of me to think of her being in control of nuclear weapons. With a bit of luck, she will write her book and fade away into obscurity.

But I do disagree with the title of the thread because it's an insult to wicked witches everywhere to put Palin in that group. :D

Hey T,

As a public servant I thought she did her best work in Nalin Palin. Obviously some of the funds she's been accused of misusing did find some very good use in melon production investments. :D Now those are some gorgeous nukes.

Why do you hate her so much?

Wow. I am trying to figure out why Doc and so many others hate her so much? I just don't understand it. I believe it is clear that McCain made a mistake of choosing her as a running mate. Clearly, Romney or Giuliani would have been a better choices. I also am disappointed that she has resigned rather then serve out her term as she was elected to do.. I still don't understand what she did to get flamed on the board the way she has? What has she done to deserve your contempt other then look like an unpolished and rather poor choice of a vice presidential candidate. The current VP puts his foot in his mouth every day and I don't read a thing on this board?

Why do you waste your time hating her so much?

Hungry,

I can't speak for anyone but myself when I say that I don't hate her. I dislike her intensly, but hate is not the appropriate word.

She annoys me and there are several reasons for this. To name a few:

- She is NOWHERE near the caliber of individual that should EVER even be remotely considered for the office of president (or vice president) of the United States. Even discussing that as an option is scary to me.
- It bothers me that she has been elevated to the current level of celebrity by the republican party and the media and that because of this I have to hear about it every time she bags a moose, or picks her nose.
- She annoys me because she now believes her own fabricated hype, that she is some kind of politically important person and that we should all care what she does, thinks, or says.
- Sarah Palin blames the very media that she tried to leverage for power for invading her privacy. News flash -- there is no privacy when you run for VP and Wolf Blitzer didn't get her 17 year old daughter pregnant (as far as I know).

I believe many others might dislike her for some of the same reasons. This is a person who should go back to her town in Alaska and head up the PTA or try for the mayor's office again and disappear from the national/international spotlight alltogether. In my opinion she has nothing to offer society as whole. She's not a visionary, or a world leader. Not even a proven executer or manager. She's not a thinker who will help shift paradigms, or a revolutionary. She's a boring person of questionable intelligence, a peer of George W Bush, who would be better off fading quietly into obscurity for her own sake and for all of ours.

I also find Sarah Palin tremendously annoying & i just wish she'd shut up & go away, along with her weird & lazy redneck husband & their annoying kids with stupid names.

Techman & Ben Dover pretty much reflected what i think of her. I don't hate her. I just find her too damn annoying. She's incredibly dumb & her beliefs belong in ancient times. But i don't hate her. She's just a dumb money-grabbing wannabe who doesn't get it & who's never shied away from a camera. She's in love with the microphone & sadly, her quitting on her constituents was all about money & grabbing the headlines. She's a loser & a very spiteful woman, who looks like an idiot almost everytime she opens her mouth. That final press conference where she kept on playing the same ol' whining/blaming game was a joke! But i do not hate her. Of course not. She'll supposedly write a book. Oh well! If there are enough stupid people that will pay money to read anything this bimbo has to say, well good for her!

I agree with Pamela:

Well, we can say this at least for Sarah Palin:

She finally made Dan Quayle look politically amazing in comparison to her...

Even back country bumpkins have delusions of grandure. All she is is that kid in school that ran for class president to be better than anyone else. When she tried to be Vice - President she was just capitolizing on the fact that she was a woman and she believed that the time was right for the public to vote her in solely on that basis.
