Not true. If you get hired in the private sector you do no have to speak french. Always polite thing to learn some basic french...

It's more than polite it's socially essential . It's not often [ ever ? ] reported that high tech companies are quietly leaving Quebec , despite being lured to Quebec by the ridiculous subsidies they get , because of never ending harasment from the laguage police . They insist that companies use" French words "instead of English tech terms , used universally , even in France .The tongue troopers can't provide acceptable translaions because no equvalent French words exist !!
This sort of BS ,[ remember Pastagate and Bonjour Hi,] together with dsicrimnatory social legislation , is driving Quebec backwards towards the Middle Ages .
Quebec sait faire!!

Look behind you.
. Imagine 12 to 15 years of schooling for 2 kids. ,

Pretty sure that grade 1 to 12 is the same in the US as it is here, no charge for public schools. As for the healthcare issue most employers offer healthcare as a benifit so there is no cost, if you do not get the benifit the cost is not really that high. We pay a fuck of a lot in taxes for our " Free healthcare ", the savings the Americans have in their taxes could be used for healthcare. Now the very poor and homeless can not afford this but there are hospitals for these people. Healthcare is not that big a deal up here, long waits for almost anything and we do pay a lot for it.

I side with Jal on this because I really doubt that everyone that doesn’t speak French in Montreal (which is a lot of people by the way) has no job/is on welfare..
I thought he was talking about a job over minimum wage.
Cleaning services which clean office buildings etc, like empire maintance
Actually pay desent wage many workers dont speak english or french.
Endless places looking for dishwashers dont care and actually pay cash.
I would say a lot of new wemfare recipiants ,are allophones new to quebec.

Fradi im suprised you mention your profession
.1 of the few excemptions to 101
Technical terms can not be translated english to french
so pratt cae air canada bombardier rolls royce are
Exempt.
You must be a engineer fitter inspector or other group 1.
Most logistic wharehouse personal are french or speak it.
i have never heard of a english speaking only
unless a old employee and the grandfather clause covers that.
and if you work in aerospace,im sure you agree
you like most of the people and politics is brutal.

I can tell you it's not the case anymore. Many big tech companies now have office in Montreal and many are coming over. And not only in AI or aerospace. Fintech is also on the rise here.

We see the bullshit with french every day
Canada is supposed to be bilingual.
Stop signs are in french everywbere but westmount.
Take the metro even emergency comunication
Is in french.i know endless anglaphones who complain tbey cant get a good
Job cause their french is no good.
Only job serving the public where you dont need french
Is flat on your back, but even that work seems slow.unfortunately.
Think you get a job with 911 where a life can be at stake.
Montreak could soar if the politicans could take the blinders off
And show a little tollerance.
Lastly if you come here you have kids they have to go to french school
French quebecers are not allowed to send their kids to english unless tbeir spouce went to english here

Exempt, but not really, we went through years of specifications being translated into French and parts catalogues etc.
Company trying to be a good citizen.
It never worked out because even the French speaking guys couldn’t figure out the meaning of some of the words and continued using the English versions that they were used to.

It was a total fiasco especially when we got into joint ventures with US and European facilities, it was so much easier to use English all around.

Internally you could function in French only, but 95% of the supplier base was either in US, Europe or rest of Canada, where it was all English, so someone like me who dealt with the supplier base all over the world, it was basically all English until I had to disposition defective parts located in the warehouse or if I needed to request additional non destructive testing or xrays etc... where the majority were French speaking, but in most cases their English was better than my French.

You wont get hired if you dont

Totally false. It just depends what field you work in. I work in the games industry and i'm surrounded by unilingual anglophones. Meetings are done in english to accomodate them. All emails are either english only, or french/english. They had no issue to get hired. It's harder to integrate the Quebec society though, since you're kind of isolated. But Montreal lives in its own bubble compared to the rest of the province, something to remember.

I was thinking the same thing. I'll be happy with my NYC paycheck, US/Canada exchange rate, and come up when I feel that urge in my pants.

Bill 101 is perfect. It makes us unique in North America. It does protect that we will still be a French society for many many more years.

It is a very bad bill. Many companies moved out of Quebec due to language enforcement laws. Now big box retailers got to add a French slogan in their names. BTW the bill was never about protection it was always about dominance. There is a big difference.

But in reality bill 101 is not applied where it makes no sense. And to do and work in a business in Montreal you need to speak English. You can do without French. Yes most will eventually pick up some french and/or become bilingual. But saying that you absolutely need to speak French to live and work here is simply not true.

I am not sure which world you live in but without French your skills and degree mean jack squat. In Quebec they do not let you even stand unless you know French. Many of my relatives who came had masters and had to leave because they could not get hired because they did not know French. Even companies where French is not essential they had to enforce it due to the language police. Interviews has to be given in French. All official communication has to be done in French. Only companies exempt from this are companies where the majority of their client base is outside of Quebec. IT companies also get away with this since all software is in English. French in Quebec is mandatory otherwise no job. I seen many Indian immigrants who usually speak no French are doing delivery driver, Uber, and running a business where French is not essential. But they usually leave for Toronto.

^^^^^^ The amount of kids learning French increases every year, give it time and everyone in Quebec will know English.
Quebec scares businesses, it was seen during the last referendum.
