Star Treks 1, 2, 3 all came before the TJ Hooker series. My time frame above was for the 18 year period between Hooker and Boston Legal. The 13 year period between ST 6 and Boston Legal contains little beyond video games and television ads.
Producing a series for 3-4 years is a lot of time and effort, Reg. And Star Trek 2 and 3 were DURING TJ Hooker. His last Star Trek appearance was in 1994
Oh he was also the host of Rescue:911, a semi-reality series between '89 to '96. His voice was in the movie OSMOSIS JONES...
So now you want to diss him because of the opportunities he wasn't offered? A lot of Hollywood actors would kill to be working as regularly as he has over 50 years...

Ha! If it weren't for camp, he'd never have gotten an acting job in the first place.
Oh? True the man has been nominated for the Razzie AWARD (undeservedly so, when other candidates like Dolph Lundgren, Arnold and others abound) but I won't go on again about the 60s and camp being the name of the game on television back then. How then do you reconcile the goofy Larry Hagman from I Dream of Jeannie to the deadly serious Hagman from Dallas?

Shatner is a hell of an actor when he wants to. I tend to think so, and so do these people:
Nominated for the Golden Globes 2005 and 2008, for Boston Legal
Nominated for the Emmy award EACH year between 2004 to 2009 without exception for the Practice and Boston Legal, WON the award twice...
Nominated for the Emmy award in 1999 for 3rd Rock from the Sun
Nominated for SAG awards each year between 2006 to 2009

That is also not to mention the Twilight Zone starring roles, including in Terror at 20,000 Feet which is widely considered the marquis TZ episode and previously was posted in this thread for everyone's viewing pleasure. The very best actors in the biz were appearing in TZ during its run.

Nobody has even mentioned Shatner's cable TV talk show in which he distinguishes himself as an interviewer on a par with anyone. The man has been ubiquitous in TV, film and stage for 60 years.

LOL, you are a fan of this man, 'Beav, I have to admit!

Now that we have chosen to dissect Bill in every which way possible, I turn it back to ''everyone'''s favorite, La Céline...Frakly, René Angelil must be thanking the gods every day Disney teamed his trophy wife with the amazing Howard Ashman and Alan Menken for the soundtrack to the Beauty and the Beast animated movie, which gave her some visibility. And that James Horner did such an amazing soundtrack to Titanic and had to fight with James Cameron to include her in the film's title song.

If not, then god only knows what René would do today to pay for his enormous gambling debts and might still be having her sing garbage songs like ''Je danse dans ma tête'' (where's the puking smiley?)

Hey EB,

Next time you'll come to Montreal bring one of these. In that way you wont get caught in the nude in an hotel corridor! :D

http://plaidstallions.blogspot.ca/2006/05/cool-pajamas-for-change.html

This maybe a fair sign that Shatner is more popular than Dion. She doesn't have a pajama's line with her name. But she has a perfume that was named after her and Shatner doesn't have one!!!!...Ah I'm still confused. It is very troubling not to know who is the most famous between Dion and Shatner.

What the hell are you talking about? Shatner was in Star Trek: the Motion Picture which came out in 1978, so I didn't count it. But he was in Star Trek 2, 3 , 4, 5 and 6. then he appeared in Star Trek Generations with Patrick Stewart...He even directed Star Trek 5, but he should really stick to acting :)

Well said, Shijak. Personally, i was never much into Star Trek: The Next Generation. However, i've always loved the original series, bought the vhs collection in the 80's, and two years ago bought the entire collection on Blu-ray. I've seen every single Star Trek movie starring Bill Shatner, and i believe that he starred in movies 1 to 6, unless i'm mistaken. And you're quite correct: he did in fact direct one of the movies!

I wasn't much into T.J. Hooker, but caught several episodes mostly because of Heather Locklear. I did enjoy Shatner when he later starred in two Columbo movies, and several made-for-tv movies including one about a doomed aircraft, which i very much liked.

I discovered the fantastic legal comedy/drama "Boston Legal" when it's 4th season was reaching its end. His portrayal of Denny Crane won me over. James Spader is also fantastic in that series! I'm surprised that Boston Legal got cancelled after 4 seasons, but it's more than possible that it was due to the fact there was a flood of legal-based tv series at the time. I wasn't aware that he also played in "The Practice", but i can't wait to check it out one of these days when it comes out on dvd or blu-ray.

Once in a while, i still watch the old Twilight Zone episodes that i purchased on blu-ray last year, and Shatner acted in two of them.

Shatner re-invented himself over the past decade in that he's become known around the comedy circles. He also was the emcee two or three years ago for the Junos, which is Canada's version of the Grammys.

And you're quite correct in stating that this great man is a workaholic and has never stopped working.

I don't even think polls matter when it comes to whom the most famous Quebecer is. It's William "Bill" Shatner hands down!!! Heck, it shouldn't even be close!

Kirk out.

p.s. Anyone remember how "Star Trek" was called when it ran on the french tv channel (on TQS, if i remember correctly) back in the 70's?

When this thread first started, I thought "Who the hell cares". We are now on page 22 so I guess quite a few do. I still don't care who is the most popular. At least Shatner doesn't make me want to jam a meat thermometer in my ears every time I hear him.

That is only the tip of the iceberg if you want to do a merchandising analysis between the two.

He has been reinventing himself successfully for 60 years. From Shakespearean trained actor to the Twilight Zone star of stars, to Captain Kirk, to TJ Hooker, to Priceline pitchman, to Denny Crane, to standup comic singer. He has had more lives than all of Ernest Hemingway's cats.

I have also seen no actor inject into a science fiction TV series the comic element that Shatner was able to do. Other actors portraying the Enterprise Captain have not even tried to go there because they would embarrass themselves. That is why Shatner's rendition of Kirk is considered culturally significant and iconic.

Geez, I've just lost all my badass image...:)

It was Patrouille du Cosmos, Doc, one of the first tv shows I can remember watching as a small little boy. The episode with the salt vampire scared the crap out of me at the age of 4... but then so did the silly rubber monsters of ULTRAMAN, so I must have been a real wuss back then:)

Can I ask you guys a question? I only watched the English version of Star Trek as a kid. Was the French actor used to dub Shatner's lines able to pull off the comic pauses in the same way as Shat in the English version? Did you get the campiness in the French version?

William Shatner was way ahead of his time. The travels to distant Galaxies, battles with Aliens, Time and space travel. When those Aliens finally land, we will see who is more popular, Captain kirk, or that howling madness that is Celine. I think only Eagerbeaver knows what is really going on, on this planet earth.

...does it ever get crowded up in that head of yours?:)

I think if they should ever do a movie where William Shatner gets killed onscreen, it should be done by Michael Myers!! :)

How many far off distant galaxies did Celine discover, how many alien battles did she fight ? NONE. Popular or not, Shatner is a significant person to mankind and and to civilization. celine is just a singer.

Here goes again, confusing WORTHINESS and FAME.
Bin Laden more famous worldwide than Pasteur and Banting.

Dion more famous EARTHWIDE than Shatner
Shatner more famous GALAXYWIDE and on Kronos (Qo'nos) than Dion

William Shatner was way ahead of his time. The travels to distant Galaxies, battles with Aliens, Time and space travel. We are only today starting to realize the reality of Star Trek and the far off distant galaxies. As of this day, Astronomers have discovered over 800 planets capable of sustaining life. these planets are very similar to our planet earth. William shatner was making these discoveries decades before anyone else. How many far off distant galaxies did Celine discover, how many alien battles did she fight ? NONE. Popular or not, Shatner is a significant person to mankind and and to civilization. celine is just a singer. She will not give us any guidance on how to save planet earth when the Aliens return.

And do you think the Klingons, the Romulans or Gorn would be entertained by Celine's singing? I don't think so. They don't need entertaining, they need to be fought, and that is why Shatner has his fame and she has her one hit song and her culturally not so significant body of work which is of extremely dubious enduring impact.

While I still believe that Shatner is more famous than Celine, you can't minimize Celine's popularity as a singer. She's sold over 200 million albums, a number that very few female singers can even come close to and she's on most every top ten list of female singers that you can find. Even though there is about as much real feeling and emotion in her recordings and performances as there is in muzak, a lot of people love her music.

I was under the impression that it was 'Aux Frontieres de l'Infini', but i believe that you are quite correct. It was indeed "La Patrouille du Cosmos".

One of my favorite 'Star Trek' episodes is when the landed on a planet ran by Nazis. I also loved the episode where Capt. Kirk went back in time & fell in love with a character played by Joan Collins.

Another favorite tv series of mine in the 70's was "Space 1999".

To me Celine's popularity is like Taylor Swift's, it is based on nothing. There is nothing artistically significant in their work. On the other hand, Lady Gaga and Adele have produced music that has some artistic value, although the significance of it can be debated.

Shatner's popularity is based on 6 decades worth of work that has resonated with multiple generations. It is silly and amazing that people can argue between one hit in 1997 that has some pop radio mileage (but not much) on the one hand, and the 60 years of product produced by Shatner, which penetrates many different genres of the entertainment world, including singing, including comedy, and serious acting as well which has reaped him multiple major acting awards. There really is no comparison because the genres he has penetrated themselves bespeak a much wider international audience than what Celine enjoys.

I am not a fan of Celine, but I understand she holds popularity in Quebec and deservedly so, as someone who has gone to the USA and earned $400 million based on a portfolio which is frankly not that great. She is to me like Taylor Swift, average pop artists who craft soft pop music for the masses. There is no art in their pop music, it is like the Bay City Rollers were to 1970s rock. Nobody has heard of BCR now, and nobody will know these pop musicians in 30 years. And it stuns me on the rare occasion, the very exceedingly rare occasion, when I hear a BCR song, even on the 1970s rock stations I listen to.
