Protagoras and everyone else,

You are forgetting that Techman conducted a random poll on another board in which he directly asked the question of who is more the popular Quebecer worldwide, Shatner or Celine Dion. Shatner won 36-3, an approximate 12-1 margin. That is well over 90% of the vote for the math challenged amongst you.

Techman has posted that evidence directly in this thread. As far as I am concerned that is about how it would turn out outside Quebec, anywhere in the world. Therefore it is all of you that are posting based on anecdotal or speculative evidence, not me.

Even though he was a flash in the pan, Luca Magnotta was famous world wide when he was on the run accused of murder.

Merlot,

Techman conducted that random and impartial poll of another board's members, not me. Others were contending that there was no evidence to support my position. I submit that Techman's poll is more evidence than anyone else has produced, which is mostly or exclusively anecdotal and speculative evidence. It's true that almost any poll can be attacked for one reason or another, but it is the only direct evidence that exists with respect to this question, at the moment. Personally, I feel that the 36-3 vote in favor of Shatner over Dion bespeaks a strong likelihood that males would overwhelmingly favor Shatner. I also think Shatner would run high with females based on Priceline and Denny Crane recognition factors.

I am convinced that Shatner is the most famous Quebecer in the world. I think Dion might be more famous within the contiguous boundaries of Quebec, for reasons already discussed. That is why we see some of the aberrational posts that we do in this thread.

I'd like to know what kind of board that was. If it was Trekkies International, Shatner failed miserably. BTW, I'd be shocked to learn that Techman is a member of any board that would vote otherwise. Ask the question on a Pop Divas International board and see how the results look.

Oh c'mon, Beav, you're too smart to be peddling this horseshit. Random and impartial polling of a narrow interest group, whatever that interest may be. I wonder what a random impartial poll of the Paul McCartney Fan Club would have to say about the Most Popular British Singer?

I am convinced that DION is the most famous Quebecer on planet Earth. I think SHATNER might be more famous within the contiguous boundaries of USA, and planet KRONOS (Qo'nos) for reasons already discussed. That is why we see some of the aberrational posts that we do in this trend.

That is because the dummy who wrote that article forgot Shatner is Canadian, as did some other confessed dummies in this thread.

Many people think Shatner is American!!!!! Again, for reasons discussed ad nauseam earlier in this thread. In his acting he talks like an American, not like a Quebecer (French or Anglo).

WRONG!
They have an article on Shatner on the canadians.ca site: http://www.canadians.ca/s.htm

They even call it S is for Shatner !

An argument off the top of your head is not good enough, check the facts first.

I prefer Shatner to Dion any day, but that does not make him more famous than Dion.

And I'll give Bill the last words in this discussion EB :

Obviously it is an editorial mistake by the editors of the website. It makes no sense to say S is for Shatner and everyone knows who he is and not include him on the list. These kinds of editorial mistakes happen all the time on websites. ESPN makes these kinds of mistakes and nobody figures them out, sometimes ever. They once put up a video by Seth Davis reporting that one of the players on UConn's basketball team had been expelled for "bad grades." In fact he had been expelled for sexually assaulting a female after an administrative hearing. The video was not taken down, it was on the ESPN website for many weeks.

Don't assume that proper editorial work was done before that list was posted!!!!!

Canadians.ca isn't exactly the authority of all things Canadian. The site has a world ranking of 3,534,066 while merb ranks 111,047. They probably gets less visitors in a month than voted in my poll in 24 hrs.

Rumples...maybe you should learn to read the thread you're replying in. I mentioned that I had posted my poll on an international guitar board that has an average of over 3000 members from all over the world visiting per day. That number more than doubles if you take unregistered visitors into account. While the members are primarily male, there are a number of female members there. The poll I posted there is at least as valid as Alyssa's informal poll on a board that caters to women who are primarily French speaking and who would naturally be aware of Céline Dion if not fans of hers and unless a male actor was some kind of heart throb, the members there probably wouldn't have a clue who the guy was.

I doubt that a poll could be posted on any board on the net without someone having a problem with it. That's life.

#3 Romeo Dallaire

I can't take seriously any list that would have Dallaire as number 3. Considering how many Americans think the war of independence was fought against the French, and considering how many surveys of ignorance I've seen for Canada and elsewhere, I am sure Romeo Dallaire is about as well know as Benjamin Disreali, not at all outside of epic nerds like my self and specialists in the field they are in.

Really, beating out Banting and Best, Wayne Gretzky, Snook, Harry Hibbs, Dick Nolan. Seriously? Don't get me wrong, Dallaire, seems like a nice enough fellow, the male parental unit is a fan but he would be far far down the list of famous Canadians. Hell I'd guess the Rocket to use a Quebec example would beat out Dallaire.

For that matter how did Dion and many others on the list beat out History's greatest Evil, Justin Beiber.

Also
#6 Estella Warren
#13 Peter North
I don't even know who these people are. Wait, they don't mean Peter North the porn guy do they? A few others I am aware of but that is it. Also the list is extremely baised towards the musical side of performing circus monkeys.

James T Kirk fought an epic rap battle vs columbus joining the ranks of such people as Hitler, Vader, Chuck fucking Norris, Abe Lincoln, the Shamwow guy, Ben Franklin, Lil Kim Jong Il, Hulk Hogan, Macho Man Savage, Mr Rogers, John Lenin and Mr T who from what I understand pities the fool.

+1 for the Shat at least via proxy.

And since you guys are talking about music (guitars for that matters).

In 2007, headlines all over claimed Dion along The Police and Hannah Montana the cash 'kings' of the year.
There u go again. You get exposure thru The Police and the female Beiber for a couple years 'Miley Cyrus'.

Then again in 2009 along side Madonna and Beyonce.

Then comes articles upon articles of Beyonce pregnancy and who are given exposure ? Angelina Jolie and Celine Dion.

And if you want to go into Forbe's celebrity list ? since 1999...
In the top 10 ? Dion was mentionned in 1999 at no.9
Shatner ? nop !

One very important trend also that you guys fail to notice ?
For 3 years now because of the I-Pod, I-Phone, I-Pad "penetration" there is more music singers and players among the top 10 celebrity in the world than actors & comedian.

Which in turn provides once again a lot more coverage and fame by association.

So when Dion 'goes topless looks like Gaga' in August 2012... the 'A m'tombe sur les nerfs' gets worldwide attention bcause of who ? Gaga !

There you go. End of the lesson on 'fame'.
You can grab your diploma on communication and marketing on your way out of the classroom !

May I suggest you ask them to correct one of their myths about Canadians? They say Canadians have as many guns as Americans do. The truth is we have 31 per capita, compared with 89 for the Americans.

The Canadian.ca site has been totally discredited and the information posted therein is both nonsensical and internally inconsistent.

The only credible piece of evidence we have is the Techman poll and its results, which I think offers the best insight on the original thread question. Everyone on that board is knowledgeable about the music industry, yet Shatner still won the poll 36-3. And his fame is due to his acting, not his musicianship, even if he has made some recordings.
