An actor, as popular as he(she) can be, will never have the same world wide popularity and exposure as an international pop music artist who has sold over 200 millions albums around the world, simple fact. Music is played every where, stores, shopping malls, elevators, etc.
You think that more than a quarter of the population of Asia knows who Celine is ? I doubt it, but I`ll bet ya that three quarters of the world knows who Captain Kirk is. Bet you BTS is more popular than Celine everywhere except Quebec and Las Vegas, even if China banned girly men.

I dont think anyone in China knows who Captn Kirk is, they might have seen the more recent star trek movies but surely not the original tv series. Céline is probably more popular every where else but here in Qc. I am far from being a fan of her, I prefer fusion and prog rock, but denying the fact that she is the most known person from Québec and Canada even is just plain ignorance.

LOL many people never heard of her or her music. She is only important inside Quebec and to the few drunken patrons that attend her shows in Vegas. She is frankly a has been and hasn't made any important or significant music in many many years and lives and leeches off past fame and success.

Living off his past fame is something Shatner could have done. But he has instead reinvented himself again, and again, and again. And has just increased his popularity across generations. Shatner has had a much more admirable career and has propounded his fame across 60 years while continuing to remain important not just as an actor but as a commercial pitchman and now an astronaut. He is the only person who has gone to space in TV, in major motion pictures and now for real!

One other thing: it would have cost Celine $200 million for a ticket on that rocket. It didn't cost Shatner a cent. Why is that do you think? Because Jeff Bezos knows publicity from Shatner is HUGE and publicity from Celine is zero/who fucking cares. Which is why she would have had to pay big and Shatner didn't.

Lets let twitter settle this. Celine has 900 thousand followers and Shatner has 2.5 million followers.
Besides unlike Celine , Shatner is a multi media talent.

And at age 90 he puts to shame a faded pop star who in reality has limited fame in the French Canadian community in Quebec and not in the Anglo world at large.

William Shatner did some of his finest and most memorable work as an actor in perhaps the most memorable Twilight Zone episode of all time, Nightmare at 20,000 feet.
What is incredible to me is that this episode aired in1963- almost 60 years ago- when most people on this board were not even born, and even before his Glory Days as Captain Kirk. That episode terrorized me, and from childhood until this day, I have never sat in a window seat on an airplane, and it is because of the influence William Shatner had on my life in these unfortgettable clips from that classic episode:

Even before that, in the 1961 film Judgment at Nuremberg, the 30 year old Shatner appeared with Spencer Tracy in this scene:

All of this work long before Captain Kirk, TJ Hooker, Boston Legal, Priceline Pitchman. I would go so far as to say that William Shatner is not only the most popular Quebecers worldwide but he has had one of the most fascinating acting careers of all time by any actor, in terms of its breadth and duration and expansion into other areas of entertainment.

Sorry, Beav, this is horseshit of the first order. Priceline was huge before Shatner ever came on board.

I really don't know exactly how popular Celine Dion is, but I do know that Leonard Cohen has filled huge halls around the globe.
I would argue that the most influencial is cohen, the most known celine. As for shatner, he is well known but ask people the name of the quebecer in star trek and most will answer « there is a quebecer in star trek? » plus his 600 000 million dollar price line money is a myth that was debunked a while back. his networth his way less significant than celine and laliberté. I don’t believe he has lived in quebec since he started his career. i see Sutherland here and there in Mtl but him never. btw the joke under your signature

That`s because if you say Quebecer to a person from outside Quebec ....they think French Canadian.
Shatner is a Jewish anglophone kid , born in Outremont Quebec, and who probably barely understands french.

Shatner was educated at McGill and they have some kind of museum dedicated to him there.
"Shatner was born in the Notre-Dame-de-Grâceneighbourhood of Montréal, Québec, Canada, to a Conservative Jewish household. His parents were Ann (née Garmaise) and Joseph Shatner, a clothing manufacturer.

Shatner attended two schools in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Willingdon Elementary School and West Hill High School, and is an alumnus of the Montreal Children's Theatre. He studied Economics at the McGill University Faculty of Management in Montreal, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1952.In June 2011, McGill University awarded him an honorary Doctorate of Letters. Shatner was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters from New England Institute of Technology in May 2018."

I am pretty sure McGill does not allow you to have a degree if you can't speak French and McGill is not allowed to do business in Montreal if their graduates cannot speak French. It is part of their deal with Quebec authorities. Therefore I am pretty sure Shatner speaks King Louis's French. If you put him on the French Jeopardy with some of the natives on this board he would probably kick some ass.

Complete BS.

I graduated from McGill and many of my fellow graduates did not know a word of French. My fellow students were from all over the world. Some barely spoke English never mind French

Never was any kind of language test applied, asked. nothing....nada.

How do you make this stuff up ?

I disagree, people outside quebec know that leonard cohen was a montrealer, that corey hart is a quebecer as well as norm mcdonald. French speaking quebecois might not know much about mc donald tho because he did his career in the usa - unilingual french quebecers do not listen to snl. most people do listen to music in english tho. I travelled to the states and around the world a lot and lots of people think french is a folkloric phenomenon here. I remember watching one of the late night show a few yrs back and they referred to le cirque du soleil as a France production.

what? that’s not true, most mcgill kids do not speak french or very very little, i spent enough time there to testify of that with certainty.

So what you are telling us is that the most prestigious university and institution of higher learning in all of Quebec, a province which mandates language laws that are visible to all, is allowed to send its graduates into the world not speaking any French at all. This of course makes complete and total sense. Does McGill get a tax exemption from Montreal and/or Quebec as well? If not, perhaps they should ask for one.

Some professional orders, example order of engineers, order of medical doctors .....may have requirements of proficiency in a language. But only if they choose to practice in Quebec. The university has no say, or business in this.

A large percentage of students don't even end up working in their graduating field or Quebec.

I am a member of a professional order. The fact I did all my elementary and secondary school in French was good enough.

McGill gets a boat load of money from the Quebec government. That is why education, at one of the best universities in North America, is affordable.

There is no French language requirement to graduate from McGill, except where the people programme itself requires French, e.g. French literature.
