Look behind you.
In the Pacific division there is a 3 point difference between first and fifth place.

Ottawa Senators

The Ottawa Senators have been playing exciting hockey this season although it doesn't show in the standings. Like the Habs the Sens will miss the playoffs. However this is a team to watch out for in the future. They have many young prospects in the organization and on the team. But most of all they'll have two top 10 picks in this year's upcoming draft.

Currently they stand 29th out of 31 teams. So their own pick will probably be a top 5 pick. But it's the pick they got from San Jose (in the Erik Karlsson trade) that looks great now. San Jose currently sits 26th in the standings. Could Detroit be tempted into trading their first overall pick for Ottawa's two picks? It's a possibility. But even if Detroit choses to keep its pick Ottawa will still have two great first round picks at the upcoming draft which will greatly help this rebuilding team in the future.

Yep- incredible news. It’s amazing to me that Gallant loses his job in light of some of the coaches that have been hanging onto theirs. I guess Vegas figured they would be a lot better. So did the Sharks when they fired DeBoer.

BTW, has anyone kept track of how many NHL coaches have been fired this year or in the last 3 seasons? I am gonna bet more NHL coaches have been fired than in any other pro sport this year and the last 3 or 4.

Fired this season:

Mike Babcock
Peter Laviolette
Peter DeBoer
Gerard Gallant

I wonder if it has to do with the amount of success the Leafs have had since they replaced Babcock with Sheldon Keefe. The Leafs have been among the top teams in hockey since Keefe came on as head coach. Maybe teams figure that's the way to go to put a stop to the losing.

Personally i think the firing of Gerard Gallant is a travesty! He led an expansion team to the Stanley Cup final in its first year and last season once again qualified for the playoffs. Usually it takes years to make an expansion team competitive. Gallant won't remain unemployed for very long.

It’s not really clear to me why things haven’t gone as well for Vegas as predicted. Many experts had them on the top of the west. Obviously management felt a Cup is within grasp and a different voice was needed.

It does seem like in hockey, as opposed to other sports, firing a coach can lead to a turnaround. Hockey is all about building a system that best utilizes the talent on hand, as opposed to forcing the talent into a system. Pragmatism is required. Many slumping teams can believe that the problem isn’t the talent, but rather the coach’s message not being heard. In reading books about hockey, especially Phil Esposito’s book written from a GM perspective, he made the correct moves and the coach didn’t produce with the players he was given. He hammered his coaches in that book. But how much of it is on the players themselves to produce and stay healthy? This often gets lost in this. Chemistry issues can also develop. Sometimes a coach needs to change lines due to poor player chemistry. Sometimes the issue is inadequate depth of lines.

As I didn’t follow Vegas closely I don’t know what maneuvers Gallant made or didn’t make or why they thought his coaching was an issue. The first season he had with Vegas was nothing short of remarkable and a blueprint for any hockey expansion team. I don’t think Gallant will stay unemployed long. The man is deeply invested and loves his players.

Vegas is only 3 points away from the top spot in the Pacific division which is why his firing is absolutely ridiculous! It wouldn't surprise me at all if they're back in first place by the all-star break and people will claim the firing was a stroke of genius. Bullshit!

Watching the news last night and from what I got from the Vagas firing is they wanted the coach they just got and were afraid that if they waited he would have been picked up by someone else.

Unfortunately, Gallant was a victim of his own success the first year. By taking Vegas to the finals, he completely spoiled fans and management into thinking a Championship was a pussy hair away. Then they made the playoffs again and lost a tough 7 game series. Management took the bait on that, and made some aggressive offseason moves to improve the team and add firepower. I think this happens a lot in hockey unfortunately, where fans and management get spoiled by expectations and then, during team slumps, they become trigger happy for replacing the coach. Some of it is what Doc said earlier, occasionally the shock of switching coaches gets a team to play better and a significant cause-effect relationship is believed to have occurred, even if it's likely the team would have started playing better anyway. That is what happened here and I am in agreement with you. Vegas was due to play better, they are just going to do it for another coach. Terrible raw deal for Gallant and there are MANY guys more worthy of being fired than he is.

I'm hearing that they felt Peter DeBoer would be a better fit for their team & felt they had to hire him before someone else did. True or not, it still sucks! But Vegas' loss of Gallant is some other team's gain. I wouldn't be surprised if some other organization also fires its own coach and hires Gallant just in case Gallant may not be available by the end of the season.

At this moment in the Pacific division there is 1 point between first and fifth place. Flames are losing to Ottawa now and Vancouver and Vegas play later.
Update... 4 way tie for first and Vancouver is still playing.

Update Vancouver with 58, pts.. Edmonton, Calgary, Vegas and Phoenix with 57 points.

Four game loosing streak and they can him ? Didn’t see this coming after everything he achieved with the LV franchise . I guess it’s true what they say that there is no loyalty in this business

Personally I think he is a very good coach and I hope he finds a good fit for him soon and does well ,,, I have a feeling LV will come to regret letting him go

Same here. I hate all-star games & all the hoopla surrounding them. The only good thing about them is that our favorite teams have a week to regroup & recharge the batteries.

They should just change the event to "fans weekend"... that's all it is in the end.
