So right now the Leafs are on fire.

They can really start to pretend big time. And for this year. But in my opinion they still need one clutch pure defense oriented star player.

But who? And who would they be willing to let go for such player?

Cheers,

Oiler Leafs game was good, nice that the Oilers won though. McDavid had one hell of a goal

That goal by McDavid was one for the ages, that's for sure! I kind of felt bad for Morgan Rielly but to be honest it didn't matter who was the defenceman on that play: McDavid still would have put on the same move and still would have scored.

Mike Smith was the difference in that game. He was spectacular! I don't get to see Edmonton play that often and i wonder why this team isn't performing better in the standings. Draisaitl is also a heck of a player!

Everywhere he goes he always makes his teams better than they are. He regularly builds Cup contenders. It likely won't be long before someone hires him. He's always been a winner.

McDavid is the man in the NHL but unlike Wayne Gretzky when he was the man in the NHL mid 1980s, McDavid doesn’t have same supporting cast. Leon Draisatl is sort of like what Messier was to Gretzky but there is no Jari Kurri, no Paul Anderson, no Paul Coffey and certainly no Grant Fuhr. Edmonton is simply an OK team, not a dynastic juggernaut. You will never see another team like the Oilers which won 4 Cups with Gretzky and 1 without when Messier became the main man. Messier won 2 as main man with Edmonton and with NY Rangers, although the 4 he won with Gretzky were MUCH better teams. So I feel sorry for McDavid because he just isn’t going to have the same chance at winning that Gretzky had. I actually felt Gretzky could have won another couple of Cups with better luck and if those guys all stayed together and healthy. Those teams were the best ever in the NHL. Nobody would have been them when they were at their peak.

Andersen made a boo-boo in the opening minute of the game when he screwed up and fell trying to play the puck & the Jets player had an open net to score the opening goal. Ellybuyck was also very good for the Jets. But indeed the star of the game was Matthews who showed to the fans watching the game why he's a worldly player.

Andersen did make some fantastic saves in the extremely exciting OT period but lost in the skills competition, which i didn't see. For the past couple of months i switch channels just before the skills competition is about to start since i have zero interest in it after just watching an exciting 3-on-3 OT period. I find that the skills competition just ruins the game so i stopped watching them.

That’s 3 good teams now in a row that they’ve beaten , well that’s only if you consider the Habs a decent enough team these days
The oilers are a few games over .500 and if they manage to make the playoffs anything can happen . Always liked McDavid, a real special player and that goal that he scored in Toronto was unreal

I don't. The definition of "decent" is being over .500 and Montreal is now 2 games under. So they have beaten 2 good teams and 1 lousy team in a row.

I agree. A team that has lost 8 in a row twice this season doesn't fit into the category of 'decent'. They're terrible!

The Habs last 10 loss where 8 by 1 goal and 2 by 1 goal +1 in empty net.

Perhaps they are just making it perfect that they are tanking without anyone noticing? It's the perfect plan. It's very hard to loose on purpose without anyone noticing. I learned that in Agassi's bio.

This is a misleading stat. It's a team built around a star goaltender expecting to steal games night after night. It's a low scoring team & they were built that way. They were built that way because the builders figured they wouldn't need much scoring considering the guy being paid an average $10.5 million per year for 8 years would be stopping nearly every puck shot at him. When they forgot he'd be aging and getting busier raising a family more goals starting going in. At least 1-2 more goals than they figured he'd let in. The end-result is that the offence is basically doing what the builders had planned: a hard-working that can score 1-2 goals per game and hopefully the superstar goalie will take care of the rest.

So yes indeed the team has lost many games by a goal or two. But the main reason for this is that this team was built not to score very many goals. There's no doubt they're a very hard-working team. But goals have been difficult to get and the 'builders' haven't taken account that the fact no one got injured last season was an anomaly. Injuries to Drouin and Byron have hurt them on the stats sheet and also the fact Max Domi is back to playing like Max Domi. But the biggest problem has been player development. THERE'S NO ONE ON THE FARM THAT IS A BONAFIDE NHL PLAYER WHO CAN STEP IN AND TAKE OVER WHEN A DROUIN, GALLAGHER OR BYRON GOES DOWN. Poehling and Kotkaniemi have no business playing in the NHL right now. They should be developing in the minors and only get called up when they're ready. But they're is no one else! And proof of this is that the recently acquired Ilya Kovalchuk has been their best forward since he's joined the team and he hadn't played any hockey for two months and he's 36 years old!! And sources in Russia claim his documents were forged when he started playing in North America and that he's actually 38 years old!

I give Claude Julien a lot of credit for being able to keep the games close considering this much of hard-working grinders that he's stuck coaching! He should get consideration for the Jack Adams!

Jalimon,

What that stat tells me is they are having trouble scoring goals when they need to late in games. Scoring 1 or 2 goals a game and hoping your goalie can hold the Fort is not a winning recipe in the NHL. I would contend it’s a recipe for losing.
