Sheshterkin and Rangers on Fire

Don’t look now but the NY Rangers have won 7 straight road games and tonight at home behind Igor Sheshterkin, the rookie sensation who has won 9 of 10 games while sporting a nifty .940 save%, the Rangers won again. Sheshterkin- who had 44 saves and a .957 save % tonight- is now the #1 goalie for the Rangers over Lundqvist and Georgiev. The Rangers are going to keep riding him and hope it turns out like it did for Binnington and the Blues.

Surprise......it was unique moment and a very special one to see HURRICANES using emergency backup goalie--DAVID AYRES---he made 8 saves in a 6-3 win against TORONTO..... a dream coming true....once in a lifetime :yo:

Shesterkin Storming Into Record Books

https://nypost.com/2020/02/23/rangers-igor-shesterkin-racking-up-milestones-at-a-rapid-pace/

Maybe it wasn’t the competitive imbalance in the KHL skewing Igor Shesterkin’s numbers after all.

Because the Rangers rookie Russian goalie won yet again, backstopping his team to a 3-2 win over the Sharks at the Garden on Saturday night. The 44-save performance followed his 27-save win in Carolina on Friday night, giving the 24-year-old netminder nine wins in his first 10 NHL starts. He is the first Rangers goalie to ever do that, and just the fourth goalie in history to do it.

His seven-game winning streak is tied for the longest by a rookie goaltender in Rangers history (Jim Henry in 1941-42), and it’s the fifth-longest goalie winning streak in Rangers history (Mike Richter holds the record with 11 straight in 1996-97).

Oh, and Shesterkin is the first goalie in NHL history have a .900 save percentage or better in all of his first 10 appearances since saves became a stat in 1955-56, along with the first ever to have four 40-save games, and four 40-save wins, in his first 10 contests.

“I thought he was outstanding again,” coach David Quinn said.

Shesterkin said through an interpreter, “I like when there’s a lot of shots, but it doesn’t matter how many shots there are, you always have to be prepared to help the team win.” As for getting used to the grind and the travel, he said: “It was a little tough to get acclimated after the flight, but I feel good.”

Veteran Henrik Lundqvist backed up after he had been a healthy scratch for the first time in his career on Friday night. (He also caught a puck on the bench, gave a shrug, and heard a quick “Hen-rik! Hen-rik!” chant from the fans).

When Lundqvist found out he wasn’t playing against the Hurricanes, he put in a lot of work on Friday morning and suggested to coach David Quinn that Alexandar Georgiev be the backup. Lundqvist has started just three games since Shesterkin was called up on Jan. 6, beginning this three-goalie rotation.

Georgiev was a healthy scratch.

Emergency goalie David Ayres win with NHL Canes!

https://youtu.be/OlBsR1WIT0U My god! Miracle on the ice last night! I wish I was the Zamboni driver at Toronto last night! Lol! Congrats to David! Great move out of his creek that conducted to a Canes goal! I'm used to do the same in my garage league! Better to take control of the puck than let the foward pick the puck and have a chance to shoot and score! Haha!

Yes indeed MrP it’s one hell of a story !!! Congratulations to the Zamboni driver by the name of David Ayres for showing lots of heart and rebounding after the first two goals and then stopping all the shots that he faced in the third period , just a wild story for the ages
Maybe the Leafs could use him if they make the playoffs .... even the Habs might be interested in making a zamboni driver swap with Toronto ,,, he might come handy as a backup if Price starts to struggle again and shows poor form

Ps I get the feeling that my friend Vavavoom! is somewhere laughing really hard seeing how this talented top heavy Leafs attacking squad with all their multimillion dollar contracts couldn’t score a single goal in the third period against an “emergency goalie” ( no disrespect of course to DA )

An on ice source told me that after Ayres allowed goals on the first two shots, he barked at Matthews and Taveras, “I am just warming up, now try and hit me with something that’s better than weak!” Matthews then accepted the challenge. I read he only got paid $500 which works out to $50 per SOG.

New Edmonon's Athanasiou and Mike Green are a combined minus 77 these year... Strange choice considering the Oilers have a lot of offense already but lack players that can defend... Hopefully they will learn to play both way.

My post was my sense of humor. The Oilers do have decent defense and the only reason AA was brought on is because he is quick enough to keep up with McDavid

I've always liked Athanasiou. But i must admit that the only time i saw him was when the Wings played the Leafs or the Habs. His speed always impressed me. But from what i heard yesterday from people used to watching him play is that he's a player who will help the Oilers....while also being a player who will hurt the Oilers as much as he helps them.

Mike Green i've never really liked. Hard to explain why, but i didn't like him when he was in Washington and liked him even less in Detroit. But he'll add a veteran presence to the Oilers lineup and they currently need help on defence since Klefbom got injured. Not a bad trade for the Oilers.

By the way can someone please explain to me why the Sabres acquired Wayne Simmonds from NJ?? Even Simmonds has no clue why he ended up with a non-playoffs team instead of being dealt to a contender. Florida's moves have also been mindboggling to many considering they're a serious playoffs contender and seem to be getting rid of players which could help their playoffs run. Was Trocheck's trade simply a salary dump??

Impressed by Carolina's moves yesterday. These guys are serious about a playoffs run & the moves they made were very good ones, especially acquiring Trocheck from Florida. The Isles made a couple of big moves but it's hard to figure out why they paid so much in order to acquire J-G Pageau from the Sens and i'm not crazy about the price Tampa paid in order to acquire some guy named Barclay Goodrow, whom i had never heard of before yesterday.

Montreal?? It showed me they're still not serious about rebuilding considering they only got rid of players they figured wouldn't play next year for them anyway. But what we learned from Kovalchuk's press conference is that Marc Bergevin could have got a 2nd rounder for him from another team. But Kovalchuk asked for a favor from him and to be traded to Washington, so Bergevin agreed to his demand and only got a 3rd round pick in the process. Bergevin is now getting criticized for this after we've learned this. Bergevin is famous for once saying that if you want loyalty, buy a dog......after he let the well-liked Radulov escape to the Stars & Markov sign with a KHL team. Many figure Bergevin is gambling that Kovalchuk will feel like he owes him a favor & re-sign with the habs for a bargain price (plus bonuses) after the offseason. I'll laugh if Kovalchuk signs elsewhere & will in return say "hey, if you want loyalty, buy a dog!" when asked why he didn't re-sign with the habs after Bergevin was the one who took a chance on him by signing him in the first place & rejuvenated hsi career & then traded him to the team of his liking for a lower return than he could have got from other teams.

Oilers lost again, still in the running for a playoff spot though. Noticed that if the Leafs drop to fourth they will not get a wild card spot, third or nothing.

Steven Stamkos out for up to 2 months

Big news out of Tampa where it was announced that superstar forward Steven Stamkos will miss up to two months of action due to undergoing surgery for a lower body injury involving a 'core muscle'. He left early in their game against Toronto the other night & didn't play the following game against the Blackhawks.
