Justforfun,

Thanks for the link to Casey's website. Their gourmet burger menu looks most impressive! I think we will have to put Casey's on the list for round 2 of the Montreal Burger Taste Test. Looks like Casey's might even be an early favorite in round 2.

Where exactly is rue du Marche Central?

DicAnn

Yeah, I was about to mention this place also after reading a few of the last posts from this thread. It's not a gourmet burger, and it's no fancy swiss cheese burger, but it's a very popular place and a good quick cheap eat. It's cute because it's an uber tiny burger and usually ppl order 2 burgers and a poutine or whatever they fancy.

Try out DicAnn's, it's a popular place. I guess you can say it's kind of like a ghetto burger. Enjoy. :)

Forget DicAnns or any other grilled burger for EB. He likes his charcoal grilled. So forget DicAnns or my favorite, Dilallos.

Doc...you really like Harvey's? I can't eat any burger that is made from frozen meat patties or re-heated in a microwave like Burgerking. I like fresh meat only so the only major chain resto that makes the grade is Wendy's and they are getting hard to find in the Mtl area.

Charbroiling is Essential!

Yes, the burger should be charbroiled or charcoal grilled. If it is not a restaurant that is charbroiling their burgers please clarify this when posting as charbroiling of the meat is essential.

When the burger is in a perfect shape, does not fall apart at all and even retains it's form after being bitten into, you can be pretty sure it's a frozen patty. Or there's filler in it.

But I do have to admit that I enjoy the occasional Angus at Harvey's. And I miss the Big Harve that they had last year. And I do enjoy a Papaburger at A&W, no cheese.

Next time you're in town let me know. I'll pick you up and we'll go to Dillalo's for a buckburger, wet, double meat. When a burger joint has been in business for 75 years it means something. Their fries suck though.:D

I agree that La Paryse is the place in Montreal for the best burgers.

I also like a lot the "bockburger" from Dillalo.

The Dillalo burgers are the best ever! Are these guys still in business - its been so long i can't even remember where they are.

There are a number of Dillalo restaurants around, 5 or 6 I believe. The original is on Allard st. in Ville Emard. There's one on Taschereau, one on the 132 in Delson, another on Sherbrooke West and one on Notre Dame not far from Atwater Market. Maybe another one somewhere else that I don't know about. They are all very small places except for the main one on Allard and they all serve the same great burgers.

If only I knew...
Sadly Harvey's have the "fast food chain" syndrome: the beef patty seems to shrink with time... Now thinner than it used to be. Regular burger used to be as thick as Angus is now.

I searched google and it looks like only 2 are left, ville emard and Notre Dame. I think there use to be one on de Maisonneuve near atwater many years ago. Looks like the business hasn't done too well in trying to expand - too bad. I will definitely try them out the next time I'm downtown and let you know how they are. The Notre Dame location is just east of Atwater. Love that Buckburger.

Thanks - on the island which one do you think is the best? On another subject, what did you use to find the addresses for all these places?

The original on Allard is supposed to be the best for the burgers but the fries are just terrible imho, but some like them as they are quite crispy. The one on Notre Dame, near the Atwater Market, has just as good burgers and the fries, at least last time I was there, are much better. I have found that the burgers are pretty awesome no matter which one you go to. The Dilallo's on Grande Allee, south shore, has two for one specials on buckburgers on Monday and Tuesday if you buy fries and a drink. And don't forget to order your burger 'wet' or 'wet and dipped' for the best taste! Damn...now I have the taste for one and it's too late to order. :p

I got the address list from www.canada411.com. It's a great site for finding just about anything and if you click on the links, they will bring up a map and directions.

The one on Notre-Dame near Atwater is owned by Gilles Meloche the former NHL goalie (Pitsburgh Penguins)

I prefer the one in Ville-Emard

And for the people who wants to know what is a bockburger : alldress with a slice of cheese, a slice of capicole and a big chunk of hot banana pepper

Mr. EB

If thing you will find nice charbroiled burger at the Baton Rouge

They have a location at the Complexe Desjardins on Ste-Catherine St. (so, only few hundreds meters from St-Laurent Blvd and our famous Cleo) just in front of Place des Arts

They also have another downtown location beside the Centre Bell on De la Montagne St.

Beav is intimately familiar with that location as it also houses his favourite hotel. :D

On the subject of burgers (and I hope I'm not insulting anyone's intelligence here): The best way to cook them is to first sear them on the hottest part of the grill to seal in the juices, then move them to a less hot part to cook them through.
