Cafe Rococo, 1650 Lincoln (near corner with Guy)
Cafe Rococo specializes in Hungarian cuisine, a cuisine I ate more than occasionally in its authentic form while growing up. So I really was no stranger to anything on the menu in this place.
I ordered the cabbage rolls, which in the Hungarian version are served as stuffed cabbages in a tomato-paprika sauce with shredded cabbage on top and sour cream. This differs from the Polish variant of the same dish, which also uses a tomato based sauce, but no paprika or sour cream and no shredded cabbage, and from the German variant, which is served with a rich brown gravy rather than a tomato-based sauce. My friend ordered Veal Paprikas, served with Gnocchi which are potato dumplings but they have another name in Hungarian, which escapes me.
I found the food here to be just okay. The sauce for my stuffed cabbages was somewhat bland, although the portion was certainly very hearty. I had to add a significant amount of paprika, which was served with the salt and pepper in its own shaker. My friend told me that the sauce for his veal was tasty, but the meat was a little tough. This restaurant does not seem very busy, despite its highly desirable location near Concordia University.
