Cafe Rococo, 1650 Lincoln (near corner with Guy)

Cafe Rococo specializes in Hungarian cuisine, a cuisine I ate more than occasionally in its authentic form while growing up. So I really was no stranger to anything on the menu in this place.

I ordered the cabbage rolls, which in the Hungarian version are served as stuffed cabbages in a tomato-paprika sauce with shredded cabbage on top and sour cream. This differs from the Polish variant of the same dish, which also uses a tomato based sauce, but no paprika or sour cream and no shredded cabbage, and from the German variant, which is served with a rich brown gravy rather than a tomato-based sauce. My friend ordered Veal Paprikas, served with Gnocchi which are potato dumplings but they have another name in Hungarian, which escapes me.

I found the food here to be just okay. The sauce for my stuffed cabbages was somewhat bland, although the portion was certainly very hearty. I had to add a significant amount of paprika, which was served with the salt and pepper in its own shaker. My friend told me that the sauce for his veal was tasty, but the meat was a little tough. This restaurant does not seem very busy, despite its highly desirable location near Concordia University.

2 Other Breakfast Spots

Eggsquis - Newman Blvd., Lasalle

My friend and I ate here after the Bell SIM card fiasco (see thread called "Bell Sucks Hippo Balls", here- https://merb.cc/vbulletin//showthre...-Hippo-Balls!!!!!!!!!!!!&highlight=bell+sucks)

Eggsquis is a solid but unspectacular breakfast joint. They are not using farm fresh eggs and although the Raisin Bread French Toast is a nice option, it`s not as moist as it should be. The nicest amenity in this place is that every table gets their own carafe of coffee, which is a very nice touch if you are a heavy coffee drinker, as are both my friend and I.

Tutti Frutti - St. Catherine, near Atwater

It was at this restaurant that I got a smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwich served on a bagel which looked like a New York style bagel but tasted like a Montreal style bagel, making me wonder whether they are now making "fusion" bagels. The bagel was a bit overtoasted and I had not even asked that it be toasted, but the salmon was of good quality and there was a fair portion of it. The sandwich was accompanied by a large mound of very tasty fresh fruit. Overall it was pretty good.

Mods eat steak for breakfast. We exist on a strict diet of red meat, red wine and the occasional smurf for dessert.

RAW steak and poor quality wine. We have to ensure we are always in a bad mood!

Personally I skip the smurfs, I think they taste weird, just a crazy taste I can't get used to. ;)

Whoa,

Careful! Smurf in your diet has been proven to cause OWD (Obsessive Whining Disorder) and severe diarrhea. AVOID!

Now, where can I get some blueberry pancakes?

ummm,

Merlot

There's a fairly new spot in Villeray/Petite Patrie that I like very much. It's simply called Da Silva and their specialty is Portuguese chicken (frango assado). It's more a take out place than a restaurant (there are only few tables inside). You cannot miss it if you walk around the district of the Jean-Talon market. The scent of chicken grilled on charcoal is an exquisite scent. I've seen that you can also buy steaks there. I've not tried it yet because I'm more difficult to satisfied when it comes to red meat but I'll eventually try it.

Da Silva is located on Jean-Talon near the corner of Drolet (on the North side).

Wonderful! I went there Saturday night to buy a roast chicken...the joint is closed. Newspaper all around the windows. Only a small note hanging on the door. « We will open at a new location end of September. We will write the address when we will find a new local ».

I don't know why they had to close the restaurant. Okay it was rather small and mostly a take-out place but what the fuck...it was always packed!!!!!
