I figured I would share my favorite restaurants, even if they have already been mentioned;

Greek (also my favorite sex act!) - Marathon Souvlaki. Simply the absolute best I have ever had, anywhere.

Ribs - Baton Rouge. Such delicious sauce on their baby backs, and the meat just falls off the bone.

Smoked meat - Schwartz's. How can they be beat? Unlike many, I always have a lean sandwich, as any fat will turn me right off.

Breakfasts - Petite Poucette. Don't know if I spelled that right, but driving up north just to have breakfast there may be worth it alone. Cosmos is pretty darned good too, and local.

Steak - Gibby's. Although I haven't been there in a looooong time, I still remember that place as one of my favorites. I don't know if it is still as good as I remember.

Pintxo, 256 Roy E, Le Plateau

I had read and heard a lot about Pinxto recently, and decided to check it out. It's a high end Spanish Tapas restaurant in the Plateau. The Menu: http://www.pintxo.ca/menu/menu_EN_pintxo.pdf

Pinxto (pronounced PEEN-CHO) was the culinary highlight of my recent trip. My dining companion and I ordered 2 drinks each, a total of 12 plates (pinxtos or tapas), and dessert, for a total cost with tip of $170. Some of the highlights:

Smoked scallops with green beans and sundried tomatoes (this was a special of the evening not on the regular menu) - the scallops had a superb smoky flavor and the vegetable mixture was very tasty.

Grilled Lobster Tail - perfectly cooked and delicious.

Beef Carpaccio - portion was small, but it was quite tasty.

Half Quail with pasta, pine nuts and smoked ham - first time I ever tried Quail. It tastes like chicken but the meat is darker and a bit more sinewy/muscular. It had a nice taste.

Goat Cheese Ravioli with Duck Stew - an interesting combo, which was tasty.

Filet of Basque Cod with peppers and fresh tomatoes - this was one of the bigger portion Tapas we got, and it was quite good.

Dessert - I had the chocolate creme brulee. It had the rich chocolate taste of mousse but the texture of creme brulee. Wonderful.

The bartender could not make me any of the usual girlie drinks I order, so I asked him what his mixed drink specialty was. He then mixed a white Spanish sparkling wine with a deep red liqeur and the resulting drink looked like a Rose wine. It was delicious and quite appropriate for the meal. I do not recall the name but perhaps someone will know what I am talking about.

Greek (not my favorite sex act.....OUCH!!!) - La Caza Grecque

Ribs - Bar B Barn (i've never been impressed by BR)

Smoked meat - Reuben's Deli (i find Schwartz's too far to go just for a damn sandwich)

Breafast - Chez Cora (i also liked Le Petit Poucet in Val David, but it's quite a distance just for breakfast, plus you need a car)

Steak - Moishes (i've been to Gibby's in the past but haven't yet had the steak)

In my book, the Princess Restaurant is the best restaurant in Montreal.

In my book, the Princess Restaurant is the best restaurant in Montreal because all the waitresses are in their birthday suit to serve the customers. :)

Tatami Sushi, 140 rue Notre Dame O., Montreal

I was walking around Old Montreal one night last week, alone and hungry at about 9:00 p.m. when I spotted Tatami Sushi. At that time being very hungry and tiring of searching for somewhere to eat, I decided to enter even though their menu is somewhat more limited than other sushi restos I have been to in Montreal.

http://www.tatamisushi.com/

This place is on the level of Mikasa on Peel or Isakaya on Parc, more limited menu and I would say somewhat pricier. I guess rent is a killer bitch on Notre Dame in Old Montreal.

I did not order a lot - house salad, spicy tuna (2 rolls), smoked salmon (2 piece), spicy crab (2 rolls), and shrimp tempura (2 piece). Came to $40 with tip and tax. Overall it was good but very overpriced in my opinion.

Sad story. Are you the one i spotted with cap in hand & asking pedetrians for spare change? :D
No, wrong guy. Having locked himself out of his room wearing only his undergarments, he was washing windows at the corner of St. Paul and St. Gabriel, working up quite an appetite for raw fish.

Sign number 7: Gordon Ramsay comes steaming out of the kitchen yelling four-letter words, takes off his apron, throws it in the trash and leaves.

There's a small noodle place across the street from Holiday Inn Select which serves decent food at inexpensive prices. Not much decor, but it's fast and fresh.

Wow, Chinese dumplings are my favorite!!!!!!!! Just last week I went to my favorite dim sum resto in New York City, Ping's on 22 Mott Street in Chinatown. In Montreal the best dim sum I have had was at Ruby Rouge and Le Maison Kam Fung in Chinatown. I have not been back to either one on more recent trips, however.

qing hua seems like a great place to try if we end up with the misfortune of staying at Le Maritime Plaza on our next trip. I also like the Korean restaurant on Bishop, Manna, which is serving a fantastic hot and spicy pork. They also have beef dumplings, which are not as good as Chinese dumplings.

Last trip I had a satisfactory dim sum lunch at the Wok Cafe. For $9.99 they have about 8-10 different dim sum combos. I prefer ordering my dim sum a la carte off of carts as at RR and LMKF, but I realize that at a place like Wok Cafe, given the clientele they have which are basically walk in locals and tourists off St. Catherine who want a quick, tasty and cheap lunch and nothing more, combos are de rigueur.

By the ways, on Lincoln near the corner with Guy, there is a Hungarian restaurant I tried this past summer, serving average Hungarian food. That neighborhood seems like a good location for restaurants with Concordia nearby and many hungry students who need to be fed, so I can see a Chinese dumpling place doing well there.

been eating often @ qing hua dumpling. best chinese food in mtl.

Well, maybe. Have you tried Roi du Wonton, just a block west of Quin Hua, on the east side of St. Marc, between de Maissoneuve and Sherbrooke. I like both places. They're quite different, both fabulous.

On another note, the WORST meal I've had in Montreal in the last five years was at the Wok Cafe on St. Catherine. Never again. once, adv. enough.

Buddha-Bar
l'Avenue du Plateau

I have been there many times for breakfast and a couple of times for lunch. The other day I took a lady friend there for dinner, as I knew she would appreciate the funky atmosphere and radical decor. We were not disappointed at all, a very nice experience in most respects.

One thing they should massively work on is their kitchen ventilation hood: the smell of various grilling foods (and the semi-visible smoke) is detracting from an otherwise very pleasant atmosphere.

Definitely a place for the young and young at heart, and an "attraction" of sorts. Must be experienced to be appreciated.

John,

I forgot to ask what dipping sauces are served with the dumplings? Generally, I prefer chili garlic sauce, sriracha sauce, hoison sauce and soy sauce. Please advise as I really believe the dipping sauces and the quality of same are of paramount, if not critical, importance. I can live without the middle 2 sauces listed above but generally cannot do without the chili garlic sauce or the soy sauce with my dumplings. I prefer all 4, however, and any others they want to throw in my direction.
