Can Washington make the Playoffs?
They have a Chance to get 6 Points.....to 94 Points.
Looks like 93 Points maybe the cutoff

One Philly win combined with 1 Washington loss and the Flyers are in, which makes it difficult for Washington but not impossible given Philly's remaining games. Washigton could also catch Carolina tonight which brings me to another issue...

Versus is showing the Nashville - St Louis game when they could be showing either Ottawa - Montreal or Carolina - Washington... now how stupid is that?

Washington doesn't need to catch Philly if they can catch Carolina. If the Caps beat Carolina without overtime or shootout, Washington and Carolina will be tied (but Carolina will have one more win), and both clubs finish off with the Lightening and Panthers.

Now that would be something - Washington would be the 3rd seed for winning the division and Carolina would be out of the playoffs again.

A Carolina regulation win on the other hand clinches the division and the 3rd seed for them while an overtime/shootout win or even an overtime/shootout loss gives them a stranglehold on the division title.

I did note that Washington could catch Carolina tonight... it is a huge game for both teams, which is why I questioned VERSUS showing Nashville playing a team that is out of the playoff race altogether. It is know wonder that HOCKEY doesn't get a big following in the USA. You have two huge playoff effecting games (Ottawa -Montreal being the other) and the NHL decides to give us Nashville - St Louis as the double header opener. Granted Nashville has a shot at making the playoffs but Carolina - Washington should be a war tonight, and who wouldn't want to see Ovechkin in this circumstance?

Just heard on the radio that the Habs have released Halak & picked up Andrew Raycroft on waivers.

Another strong rumour going around is that Darcy Tucker, Kyle Wellwood & Bryan McCabe will be traded to the Habs during the off-season for Chris Higgins, Andrei Markov & Saku Koivu.

And the Philadelphia Flyers have just signed Bernie Parent and Bob Clarke to a ten year contract. :D

But the commentary I heard regarding the HABS was that they traded PRICE to Toronto for RAYCROFT... I wish they'd get it straight!!!

Since I have season tickets for both Philadelphia and Ottawa I don't get the NHL Center Ice package. I already watch any NHL Hockey games on TV and if I added that it would drive my wife nuts. I don't want to ruin a good thing. ;)

If the NHL is putting the crap games on TV so that you have to pay to see good ones I think their marketing guys should be fired... you don't build fan base that way!!!

Canadiens beat Sens 3-0, win divison title!!!!!!!!!!

Who would have imagined a 100 point season for the Habs this year. Amazing.
Plus most likely the highest goals for in the league. Next comes the Eastern conference title, and then.....

Congratulations to the Habs. I never could imagine they could get 100 pts this year & with the possibility of winning the Eastern Conference. I'm also surprised that there might be at least 3 Canadian teams out of the playoffs, and Ottawa still isn't in. Man, they've been terrible since December!!! They're among the 5 worse teams in hockey since that time. Wow!

Looks like i'll be pulling for the Habs during these playoffs. I'm still predicting that the Habs will make it to the Stanley Cup finals, which i predicted 2 months ago. It's hard to say against whom they'll be playing....San Jose? Detroit? Anaheim? So many teams in the west could advance all the way.

interesting ... just a very short time ago you were saying the Habs were "terrible" and wouldn't make the post season and your Leafs were a sure lock for a playoff spot - why the sudden change?

I was wrong

I can't believe my lying eyes that the Canadiens made the playoffs, much less are contending for the lead of their division. I couldn't and didn't imagine that last year's boring, defensive NJ Devils' wannabes are leading the league in scoring.

Carbo must be as smart a coach as he was a hockey player.

Leafs excited to be playing the spoilers

! Great Headline !

The Canadian Press

4/2/2008 4:44:32 PM

TORONTO - The Toronto Maple Leafs don't have many highlights they can point to in this dismal season but forward Matt Stajan feels Thursday's matchup versus the Ottawa Senators certainly provides the opportunity for a big one.

A victory over their free-falling rivals would put a big question mark on the playoff hopes of the Senators, who need three out of four points in their final two games to clinch a trip to the post-season.

Should they lose in Toronto, they would be left needing the help of others to make the big dance.

"Yeah, we're excited in here to play that game," Stajan said after practice Wednesday. "We could take the wind out of Ottawa, that would be a maybe a bright spot on the season that hasn't been particularly the way we wanted it to go. We're going to be ready to play and I think they're going to be ready to play. It's their season on the line."

The Maple Leafs are 4-2-1 versus the Senators this season, winning the last four meetings, but were eliminated from the playoff race after a loss to Boston last week.

That was no big surprise, as they'd been wildly inconsistent all season. For the Senators to be in the position they're in is stunning, especially considering they opened the season 15-2.

"You've watched them slide and the way the NHL is, the parity there is unbelievable," said Stajan. "Hopefully we can do the job (Thursday) and make it happen and knock them out. If they didn't make the playoffs, the city of Ottawa would be similar to here the way everything's been going."

Maple Leafs coach Paul Maurice is glad to have another carrot to use with his team. Motivation can be hard to find in the waning days of a playoff-less season, but hurting the cause of a hated rival works well.

"It's nice to have something to fire them up," said Maurice. "I've been very, very worried the last two games that we've played, with missing the guys we're missing and the emotions usually right after you get knocked out, that those next three or four games are pretty ugly.

"I think we've skated pretty well and it'd be nice to get into that game (Thursday) night knowing that it's going to be a competition."

The Maple Leafs will be without their two best forwards, captain Mats Sundin (groin) and Nik Antropov (knee), who were both officially shut down for the season Wednesday.

That will give youngsters like Jiri Tlusty, Jeremy Williams and Kris Newbury up front plus defencemen Anton Stralman and Staffan Kronvall a chance to play more minutes.

"I like the way we've skated and the way they've played," said Maurice. "It's a good opportunity for those guys to go out and show what they can do."

Vesa Toskala will start in goal versus the Senators while Andrew Raycroft will play the season finale in Montreal on Saturday.

Ottawa Senators crush the Toronto Maple Leafs 8-2

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Antoine Vermette notched his first career hat trick and added an assist as the Ottawa Senators crushed the Toronto Maple Leafs, 8-2, at Air Canada Centre.

Dany Heatley notched two goals while Jason Spezza added a goal and two assists for the Senators, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Martin Gerber stopped 26 shots for Ottawa, which now has 94 points and holds the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference.

Ottawa right wing Daniel Alfredsson left late in the first period after taking a vicious shot to the head from Mark Bell. Alfredsson fell to the ice immediately after Bell came skating in and delivered a shoulder to the side of his head with 2:13 remaining in the opening period.

The Habs will have to keep their heads up tomorrow night to avoid cheap shots from slugs like Bell and Tucker

Right you are gohabsgo. Those piece of shit Leafs were talking big about how they wanted to knock the Sens out of the playoffs. Since they couldn't do it with skill - no big surprise since they don't have any skill - they decided to use cheap shots to take out a good player (Fisher) and a great player (Alfredsson).

That scumbag Bell will be going to jail soon - too bad he wasn't already there. Meanwhile, any other team would be humiliated after an 8-2 loss (especially after their big talk before the game) but for those piece of shit Leafs it's just a normal day at the office.
