with and without the Shoot Out

So is the Shoot Out good for hockey... I guess it depends on your perspective but here is what it would look like. For me I find a Shoot Out win being EQUAL to a regulation win to be a joke... and it isn't because Philly sucks at it. I see certain teams NOT trying to win games in OT because they feel they have a better chance in the SO.

I'd rather see them extend the OT to a full 20 minutes 5 on 5. This would hurt teams that don't win in regulation. I don't like the idea of changing the points system but I find the SO to be a joke. Exciting maybe but a gimmick that awards the same two points as a regulation win. I don't really like the 4-4 overtime either because if you get a power play you almost always win as 4-3 is so much more of a disadvantage.

NHL Negotiating For Outdoor Hockey Game at Yankee Stadium

ESPN is reporting that the NHL and the Yankees are negotiating an outdoor game to be played as the very last event at the old Yankee Stadium before the new one opens in 2009:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=3286014

Since 1990, other than several rock concerts (including two U2 concerts in 1992, one of which I attended), the Stadium's only known non-baseball use was for a wedding in 2006 by blind sportswriter Ed Lucas, who exchanged his wedding vows in the exact same spot as where Lou Gehrig delivered his famous farewell speech in 1939. More about the history here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yankee_Stadium

Personally I believe that the last event at Yankee Stadium should be a baseball game. Probably a lot of Yankees fans will feel that an outdoor hockey game, even one involving the Rangers, is tantamount to a desecration of the memories of Gehrig, Ruth et al, although it's a lock that they will sell the Stadium out if this happens and the Rangers are involved. Perhaps Montreal will be the opponent, but my guess is the NHL will invite the Penguins as the other team.

Montreal in first place!

A big win for nos glorieux tonight as Price stands tall in earning the shut out! :D I wonder what excuses Devil's fan will come up with? :D

Meanwhile, the Flyers embarrassingly blow a 3 goal lead to the shitty Maple Laffs! :D Flyer fans will also have a long list of excuses - no doubt! :D

Upshall is an idiot… why when you have a team buried 3-0 with no life left whatsoever; do you take a stupid penalty behind the play when all you had to do was skate?

That one penalty and the subsequent score gave Toronto a heart transplant after their heart had stopped beating. He wouldn’t have played another shift in the game after that had I been coach.

Devils (Thanks HABS) and Boston lose tonight, the Flyers have an opportunity to move into a tie with Boston, put Buffalo back five points, end the season for Toronto and make tomorrow nights game meaningless to the Leafs, pull to within 6 points of the Devils, and 3 points of the Rangers… and they blow a three goal lead and lose in OT.

How do you blow a 3-0 lead with 18 minutes left in a game??? SIMPLE ANSWER – JUST PLAY STUPID AND TIMID HOCKEY LIKE THE FLYERS DID!!!

The Battle for first place in the EAST

So Ottawa and Montreal will play (in Montreal) tomorrow night with the winner (If decided in regulation) having sole possesion of first place in the Eastern Conference... yes they will have the same number of points but the tie breaker goes to Ottawa since they have the most wins.

Since I am an Ottawa Season ticket holder!!!!

GO SENS GO!!!

Wow HABS go from 1st to 5th in one night!!!

I was wondering why no HAB update tonight???:D

At least I face the music when the Flyers fail to show up!:D

As I said before... it's a long season and there is still room for movement in either direction.

GO SENS GO - looks like they have the HABS number.

Boston is doing enverything they can to help out the Flyers... Buffalo looks all but done, and the Flyers are damn lucky... I wish they'd look at who's above them instead of who's behind them. They play Boston Saturday so it is the battle for the eighth spot as neither teams seems to want 7th.

I wouldn’t be gloating – the Flyers are barely holding on to the last playoff spot, and what happened on Wednesday when Philly lost again to the Maple Laffs? Back to back losses to a shitty Toronto team :D

As for last night’s game, Ottawa seemed to get all the bounces and most of the calls went their way

Unlike fair weather and fickle Flyer fans, Habs fans stick behind their team! :p

Hold on GHG... now who's making excuses... read my post regarding the Flyers Toronto back to back games... I didn't run and hide so go back in the thread. The Flyers NEVER get the benefit of officiating in this league.

And while they missed an opportunity to move up the the standings they did not lose ground to Buffalo until last night but the Flyers have a game at hand and an opportunity to move ahead of Boston today. They may again fail to take advantage of the opportunity but I didn't run from taking my lumps.

YOU SIR gloat all the time when the HABS win but are a no show when they don't. I just wanted you to see what it felt like.

and how did that work out for you? :D What happened today? The Flyers were up 2-1 but Boston tied it with 20 seconds left in the game - 20 seconds away from 2 points and no points for Boston - then the Bruins win in OT ! :D Oh yeah, the Flyers NEVER get the benefit of officiating in this league - will that be your excuse again? :D

GHG - you are not a very nice person... you always seem to like to boast about the habs but can't seem to take a little egg on your face when your team comes up lame, as they did against the SENS the other night. You then claim it was bad bounces and the officials. Fact is the officials took a goal away from my Flyers to give your habs a win but that was OK by you.

You seem to love to gloat when my team loses but I'm kinda used to the Flyers doing EXACTLY what they did today... the fact is I felt it coming since they were AGAIN sitting back trying not to lose. In any case, the Flyers lost today because they failed to attack and instead sat back and tried to protect a lead.

I've been a Flyers season ticket holder for 17 years but I also have season tickets for the Ottawa Senators for the past two... simple fact is I like hockey and thought that this thread was about NHL, but it isn't... it's a place for you to feel good about yourself... ENJOY.

The refs made the right call, besides, that was a while ago  so why bring it up again  just move on :(

Well maybe its time to dump your Flyer season tix and start cheering for the Red, White & Blue !! :D

oh, btw, just checking the scores tonight - Buffalo kicks some Toronto Maple Laff butt - now only 1 point behind Philly - something your Flyers couldn't do, despite having back to back chances to put the Maple Craps away! :p

Last year Chris Simon got a 30-game suspension and today Sir Chris Pronger got 8 games for doing exactly EXACTLY the same thing . He stepped on the guy with his skate blade!!!!

Spectacular!

The discipline under NHL commissioner Gary Buttman is a joke! Pronger is a repeat offender, this is now his 8th suspension - he should have got the same as Simon, 30 games

Totally agree - reading the statement from the NHL, they make it sound like Pronger accidently stomped Kessler. Anyone can see from the video that Pronger intentionally stomped on Kessler - such a joke.

Although HALAK stands tall and very impressive record would he be the next #1 ??

I watched the game tonight and found Les Canadien played very sloppy

I Like the new line-ups and if Carbo sticks to them and gives them time to gel they will make a diffrence in the long run !

Flyers suck!

The Flyers were on the receiving end of a 7-1 reaming courtesy of the Pens :D

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=232178&hubname=

Could this be payback for the Dec. 11 game when Philly beat Pittsburgh 8-2 and were accused by Pens coach Michel Therrien of running up the score? It looks the Flyers playoff hopes are fading fast!

I was fortunate not to be around to see the Flyers get pasted by the Pens... had to help a friend move.

Bottom line is the Flyers aren't a very good team right now but I don't have huge aspirations for them his season. As I said in earlier posts, you don't go from last place in the league to cup contender in a year.

On the upside, it isn't going to hurt me too much if the Flyers don't make the playoffs. Reality is they wouldn't get out of the first round anyway, so what does it matter. They've got a very good core group locked in and really only need to find some consistent goal tending. Biron has not provided that, nor has Nittymaki.

You can gloat all want GOHABSGO, it only makes YOU look rather childish IMHO...

Sundin vetoed deadline day trade to Habs

Mats nixed a juicy Habs trade at the deadline

by Steve Simmons

Mats Sundin, a Montreal Canadien?

Had Bob Gainey and Cliff Fletcher had their way at the trade deadline, Sundin would now be a member, healthy or not, of Les Glorieux.

The deal was in Sundin's hands: All he had to do was give his blessing to being dealt, which he did not.

The agreed-to trade would have sent speedy winger Christopher Higgins to the Leafs, along with Montreal's first, second and third-round draft picks, in exchange for the captain.

It was the second of two deals Fletcher had all but completed that got nixed by no-trade arrangements in players' contracts.

The first had Tomas Kaberle going to Philadelphia -- this was one was written up at the league office and awaiting appropal -- in exchange for Jeff Carter and the Flyers' first round pick.

In other words, the Leafs might have had three first- round picks, two young players of merit, the draft picks acquired in deals for Hal Gill, Chad Kilger and Wade Belak, all to go forward with. It would have been an excellent way for the incoming general manager to begin the rebuilding process.
