At one time, the worst team had the highest draft pick. I wonder if the tweaks to the rules (most recently this year http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=728795) to lower the incentive for failure were inspired by teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs which have a long and proud tradition of bottom feeding.

At least your Oilers have won 5 Cups in the post-67 NHL. In fact since 1967 they have won more Cups than any team except the Habs, even though they were not even IN the NHL until the 79-80 season.
It's been tough for them lately but the Oilers have a proud history. I have a lot more faith in the Oilers re-surfacing some time in the future than the dead-end Leafs.
Considering the number of shots the Leafs habitually surrender, it was clearly insufficient for Reimer and the rest of the worst to relax on the golf course earlier than most of the NHL. His employer should have used the entire spring and summer to provide him with the long and intensive treatment he needed and deserved for shell shock.

Best fight of the new season: Randy Carlyle vs. The Roommates. Who will be gone first - Randy or the twosome of Phil and Tyler?
Actually it's obvious that the coach will go first but it appears that he wants to get a few punches in first - as he did with his remarks about Kessel and Bozak following their less-than-stellar performance in the Leafs opening night home game loss to Montreal.

Another Leaf game, another Leaf loss. They probably won't go 0 and 82, but then again if any team can do it the Leafs can.
The Leafs are again getting badly outshot just like they did all of last season (where they ended up 23rd overall and out of the playoffs as usual). In their HOME game against Pitt, they were outshot by a laughable 41-25.
Bernier has already served notice in the first two games of the new season that he has no interest in saving the sorry asses of his teammates like he did last year. He has had save percentages under .900 in both losses.

Here are nine reasons for optimism for Leafs' fans:
1) Captain Pylon is only under contract for another six years - Clarkson and Bozak even shorter!
2) The possibility of allowing more teams to make the playoffs is being considered. It is intolerable that only the top 16 do now, thus excluding the Leafs during 90% of the last decade.
3) http://www.sportsclubstats.com/ rates the Leafs chances of making the playoffs at almost 10%. Also, Kessel is reported to be very confident that they will be allowed to play in mid April.
4) Don Cherry and Doug Maclean seem to no longer be their apologists. They are bound to play better soon without having their heads swelled by the media. Maybe this is just an unlucky century for them.
5) Another saviour is coming soon. Burke, Mini-Burke(Noonis) and Carlyle have certainly laid the foundation for a very entertaining team.
6) The Leafs can't help but be profitable in the populous province of Canada. They have ensured that Hamilton (not just Toronto) doesn't have a NHL team.
7) They have a source of revenue that no other team in professional sports does. Fans buy their jerseys and then return them without asking for a refund.
8) The Leafs are usually hot until the snow comes and then start falling with their namesakes on the trees. Then they collapse in Spring just in time to get onto the golf courses early. This year it appears that they will not be raising any false expectations.
9) It is annoying for most fans when their team goes into revolving door mode. The good news is that Leafs management has provided huge long term contracts to avoid any chance of any other team wanting to trade for any of their prominent losers.
