Might as well get some more recommendations from you fine people. Anywhere not on this list I have to eat?
I have reservations at Au pied de Cochon and Joe Beef. I plan to eat at Schwartz, St Vieteur and Cocoa 70. Anywhere else is a must?
I haven't decided on my poutine place.
For crepes, if you want to try them (something I can't ever find made well in USA), Chez Suzette in Old Montreal.
For authentic Chinese, Beijing in Chinatown.
For trendy new cuisine (like lettuce tacos with bulgogi style beef), Deville Dinerbar is my favorite downtown restaurant.
St. Viateur is great for Montreal bagels, but be forewarned that they do not age well. Eat them within 6 hours of seeing them roll out of the oven, or not at all. Low fat content is the reason they turn crusty very quickly and they are done within 24 hours. Very quick shelf life on a Montreal bagel. I love them but eat em within 6 hours or freeze the fuckers.
Cacao 70 is a great dessert place. It's also not a bad place for breakfast, although I would say L'Avenue serves the best breakfast in Montreal.
For Italian, I love D'Emma in Old Montreal, and for Steak, I like Gibby's in Old Montreal. They are both longtime running, well established, higher priced venues that consistently deliver outstanding meals and I have been to both places many times in the last 15 years.
I love Cafe Depot's coffee and their muffins. Muffin quality much higher in Montreal than in like establishments in the USA. Also like Muffin Plus at Complexe Dejardins.
For pizza, I have not found, despite many tries, any pizza in Montreal that is even close to what I can get in New Haven, Connecticut, where you can find the best pizza in the USA (3 top 11 pizzzerias in the USA are in New Haven in Pepe's, Sally's and Modern Apizza). However, I can't get crepes or bagels or muffins here like I get in Montreal. Pizza just is not a strength of the Montreal scene. But the Montreal culinary scene offers a lot of other surprises.
I don't know what your taste is in cuisine so cannot hone in with more specific advice.
P.S. Regarding Smoked Meat, Schwartz's is the place to go and it one of the few places that has its own smokehouse, grandfathered in under the law. But honestly I feel smoked meat is just a glorified corned beef, and I am not really a fan of either.
