Since the thread was close by the person who is no longer here....

So please make this thread awesome like it was before...
I remember that thread.

Regarding Japanese food, it was that thread that an SP mentioned Kazu. Still one of my favourite places to eat. Not just in Montreal.. We are talking small, quaint, authentic Japanese. Expect a line up at peak hours, its a very small place. Go during off peak times, although they are closed briefly late afternoon (3:30pm), and close early evening (9:30pm)

Kazu is on Ste Catherines, west of Guy: KAZU: https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Ka...2!3m1!1s0x4cc91a6c76601155:0xa995c5b40cf417c5

Keep in mind Kazu is cash only. Sorta annoying.

If you like izakayas, Imadake is also pretty good, reasonable prices, fun atmosphere, much larger space than Kazu, so no wait, and they take credit. Grilling is grilling, so while Kazu is slightly better in flavors, Imadake is a pretty solid alternative if you are heading west from downtown.

Ate at Cachitos twice on my last trip. The BBQ pork was ok, but the turkey & cream cheese and spinach & ricotta were amazing. I don't know what makes their cheese so good, but definitely get something with cheese in it.

I've been to Imadake several times located on St-Catherine, west of Atwater.

If you are looking for quiet and romantic this is not the place. This place can get loud and crowded at times, open kitchen. simple decore with young asian servers in japanese school girl outfits are great.

I found the food very good as you order by the plate kinda like tapas style and the bill does add up quicky. A knowledge of Japanese food does help with the menu and a palette for asian cusine in terms of taste and textures will help with your eating pleasures. Saporo on tap as the large "oktoberfest" style mug is the way to go, finish off with a sake bomb is another must. Very fun and entertaining.

Romados. When I lived in Montreal I visited the place at least once or twice a week. Now I always stop by whenever I visit Montreal.

I agree that Romados is great! Located on Rachel two blocks east of St Laurent, just follow the smell of charcoal. Their chicken is butterflied and roasted over charcoal with your choice of regular or spicy sauce basted onto your chicken, I believe the sauce is a tomato base with oil and spices. Chicken comes with choice of fries or rice and salad with a Portuguese bun. They use to give a dessert with your meal but has since stopped but they are still the best value out there. People will complain that there is not enough seating but Romados is primarily a take out restaurant and line ups do get long at peak hours. The problem with roasted chicken is that once cooked it tends to dry out if held too long a time. This is not really a problem at Romados as they turn over alot of chicken and the roasting is continuous throughout the day.

Coco Rico is another chicken place that is popular in this area but their chicken is roasted traditional style in a rotating rotiserie oven. They are located on St Laurent next to Schwartz's, again they are primarily take out with few seating and it does get hot in there as the heat from the ovens and heat lamps keep you warm and toasty along with your chicken. The quality of the chicken I find is better than the supermarket variety that use the same type of rotiserie oven. Like Romados their chicken is also basted with a sauce that is tomato base with oil and spices. If you ask for spicy they will put some cayenne to heat things up. Their plate also comes with roasted potatoes that are not too roasted and your choice of generic traditional coleslaw, mac salad, or florescent green jail house creamy coweslaw. If you like ribs I find their ribs better than their chicken.

Personally, just to weight in on the chicken debate... Ma poule mouilee on Rachel street but closer to park Lafontaine is now superior to Romados, since their head roaster is the guy who opened it up after Romados had a massive fire.
And their natas tarts are the best as well. :)
I know a couple of ladies that simply adore them :)

If I may give my 2 cents on this chicken debate as well :) Both these places are really small.

If you ever find yourself in Laval there's a place on Samson called Boucherie Et Grillades Mechwi They butterfly their chicken as well and cook over wood, gives the chicken such a great flavour. It's not much of a restaurant, more like a Butcher with a few tables. The Filet Minion Brochettes are fantastic as well. This place i better for takeout though.

2nd place is in the west island, it's called Les 3 Marias great Portuguese place, casual dining, if you're a fan of Piri Piri Chicken like I am, it's worth a try.

Aspen, debit does not equate credit. Especially for American visitors. ;) So I'm still stuck at Kazu, unfortunately. Thankfully, the city has plenty of alternatives for Japanese. In addition to Imadake, Park, Jun I, Azume are also good. And a lot of people like Saint, which I have not been to yet.

I feel like Joe Beef is over-rated. The double-down is just crazy. You have to eat it once. But only once. I put them in the same category as Pied du Cochon. Too heavy. And they used to be great, but now they're coasting a bit on their popularity, so service and the actual quality of food is not as good it used to be. Maybe more PdC than Joe Beef.

Europea's table d'hote, Le Filet's oysters, Bouillon Bilk's colorful plating (and proximity to a favorite incall location), Le Serpent, Le Local (a favorite haunt of a popular rookie and not who you think I'm referring to, at least I don't think), Garde Manger (not sure if the bar crowd is still as beautiful as years past), so many good places to eat and drink in Montreal. You can't lose visiting this place. It's a fantastic city.

I know I have talked about Satay Brothers in the old thread, well I have to mention it again that if you like singaporian, malaysian street food, its a must try! They are located at the atwater market in summer, but in winter they changed location in something MUCH bigger, from 20seats to 100seats! And they accept debit card now, not only cash! I know what I will do Friday night!

I went there in July

It was very busy 5Pm

Lots of families

Best Regards

Thiffany... The gift that keeps on giving... Pointed me to the beef tartare at Le Local last summer. One of my favorites in the city. The weather's warming up, time for tartares again. Any other spots MERB-ites would recommend that aren't in central tourist ripoff locations? Beef tartare and salmon tartare? I generally prefer a little kick to my tartares, but doesn't have to be spicy to be a great tartare. Would appreciate recommendations.

My current favorites roster for beouf:
Marché 27
Tartares Du Maché 27 Express
Les Deux Gamins
Le Local

Thanks,
Wolfie

PS I also like Le Local because of their clientele. Beautiful people. And I always think I see SPs there with their marks... errrr, chumps... errrr, clients... Don't know if they're really SPs, but damn, some of them look like they'd be great SPs. I don't know why I find this amusing... but I do. :p

Burrito Bars

I was never a big fan of burritos until a trip to the states changed all that and had me seeking the same here in Montreal. I think burritos are starting to get traction here in our city as they make a great on the go complete meal all neatly wrapped up. The 3 places I've been to pretty much have the same concept in being small primary take out with limited seating. You start off selecting your protein - chicken, beef, pork and then your starch - rice, beans and various other condiments to fill up the wrap. Salsa, guoc, sour cream. 10$ price point

Burrito Shop is located on Saint Laurent south of Pine - I can see alot of love put into preparing the burritos and service is upbeat.

M4 Burritos is on de Maisonneuve corner Guy next to Concordia - Start up franchise type lacking service and soul in their burritos

Tejano is off the beaten track in a low rent working class neighborhood on de Courcelle near the rail road tracks - The best of the 3 I've been to, their burritos have alot of soul in them!

Seasonal cooking, fresh local products

I was there recently and all I can say is WOW! The service was excellent, the food incredible, the place is casual and the ambiance is fun and upbeat! The only down side, since it's a very small restaurant, it gets really loud in there. Not a restaurant I would recommend for a first date or a romantic one but definitely worth a visit (and many, many repeats).

To make sure you get a table, make a reservation. I was there mid week and the place was packed.

I was at the Quartier 10-30 last week and I ate the best buger ever at the Jack Saloon, everything else look good on the other table also.
