Anywhere you want
My favourite restaurant is La Queue de Cheval! Most PHENOMENAL steak I'll ever eat in my life!

2- L'autre Version (French)
3- Ferreira (best french fries)

I also went at Milos yesterday. I had oysters, salmon tartar and seared tuna fish and it was amazing!

And many more... We are so lucky in Montreal with our gastronomy...

On my recent trip I discovered two very good new spots and got some further info on another old standby. All of these places are in the Chinatown 2 neighborhood in the western side of the downtown:

Delice Montreal-1858 rue St. Catherine West (next to Kazu)- this place was recommended by a fellow MERB member. They are serving authentic Chinese cuisine. I ordered takeout and when I went there on a Sunday night the place was full and not a word of French or English could be heard. 100% Chinese and Asians, mostly young in their 20s. They looked like students and one was wearing a McGill shirt. Anyway I ordered the szechuan pork. VERY GOOD. They use a lot of oil but that is how the authentic dishes get cooked. Not expensive, average Chinese food prices for the area.

Mai Xiang Yuan Chinese Dumplings 1929 St. Catherine West. This appears to be a second location to the one on 1084 St. Laurent. The place is run by 3 Asian women who are in their 30s, 2 working the kitchen (which is transparent and you can watch all food prepared whether waiting for takeout, sitting in the dining room, or even peering in the window from St. Catherine). I ordered pork and leek dumplings and pork, shrimp and mushroom dumplings with extra chili sauce. Very good. Not expensive for portion size and quality.

Grillados- 2079 St. Catherine West- I previously reviewed this Portuguese spicy chicken fast food resto. It's above average for a fast food place. What I learned on this recent visit is the House Special isn't what they do best. What they do best is whole chicken or half chicken cut up. What they are now doing is chicken for one. You can order a leg and thigh (all one piece) for $5.50 with your choice of sides (which are extra), or a breast and wing (all one piece) for $6.50. I went with breast and wing with "piquante" level piri piri sauce and a Greek Salad on the side for another $4.99. Very good. Every table has a bottle of spicy piri piri sauce and spicy garlic sauce to ratchet up the spiciness as needed. I like this place a lot for grilled spicy style chicken parts.

Cacao 70 -2087 St. Catherine West- Every time I walk by this place it is packed. Initially I thought it was a coffee and chocolate/dessert spot but they are actually serving a full breakfast. So after walking by late one Saturday night and seeing a line out the door (mostly a very young crowd), I decided to try their breakfast. They have a full breakfast menu, mostly crepes but also standard egg combination dishes and waffles. I ordered the Italian sausage frittata. I am not really a frittata kind of guy, but it sounded good, and I am open minded with food like I am with sex. It was served with fresh spinach, parmesan, eggs and sausage (but not tomatoes as indicated on menu), baked in a skillet. It was a huge portion and I only ate half. Breakfast was served with fresh fruit (banana, strawberry, pineapple) and a melted chocolate dipping sauce. Coffee was very good. A nice spot, but a little overpriced. Try it for coffee and desserts.

Saigon VIP, 1850 St. Catherine West- reviewed and been to this place before- Had the Pho and fresh spring rolls. There are better Pho places in Chinatown 1, but this place is clean, serviceable and has prompt service. There were a couple of Asian guys there who were driving the waiter crazy as they couldn't decide what to order and were asking a million questions. I marveled at the waiter's patience, especially since he made polite suggestions which they either blew off or asked more questions about the recommended dishes. I guess when you are a waiter this is what you sign up for sometimes, but it was really funny to listen to. At one point I decided to interject my own suggestions to these two who were at the next table, to see what they said. This prompted even more questions. LOL. Me, I am very decisive as to what I want after I look at any menu. Much moreso in restaurants trying to decide on food than I am when I read MERB and try to decide on an escort for the evening.

The Chinatown 2 area is full of great dining choices within a 2 block radius. The 5 mentioned above are all within 2 blocks of each other and Kazu and a host of other great spots. Happy dining if you find yourself in this area!!!!

Dumplings here are great, tasty and made fresh of course, I like to get one Grilled and one Steamed/boiled when I go.
Cacao70 You should try the Peanut Butter and Chocolate Fondue! Everything is delicious there that I have tried so far.
Saigon VIP I thought was passable, but with the choices in the area I would not go there unless I specifically wanted Viet style food.

PS. Lucille's (Westmount), the Lobster roll is pretty good, and the hostess if she is still there (Been probably half a year since I been there) was definite Model/I wish she was an SP looks. :)

CA69,

I had actually contemplated dessert one night at Cacao 70, but was discouraged by a line of people extending out the front door. I don't wait in lines for desserts, and especially not in the Montreal cold, even if it was the not-so-cold Montreal cold.

I agree with what you say about Saigon VIP. In my last 3 trips to Montreal I have eaten at about 5 different Vietnamese places ,and Saigon VIP was surpassed by the others, although their menu is extensive and their food is passable.

Regarding Mai Xiang Yuan, I requested that both of my dumpling orders be boiled/steamed, although like you, I usually get one order steamed/boiled and the other fried just for the contrast. That night was a late night run and I didn't want any fried foods right before bedtime.

EB,
You should also try Sammie Soup Dumplings (2 doors down). Shanghai style dumplings are the BOMB! Also if they have it, I would try the Onion Pan cake. If they make it right, it is so good.

Next time you are in town, try the dessert at Cacao 70. Yes overpriced, but still very good. For Breakfast, I would take a trek to Cosmos on Sherbrooke. The chef/owner is very talkative and the portions are great and tasty! Downtown, I go to Universel Dejeuneurs et Grillades. Again a little pricey but nice large portions. :)

For Viet, yeah the only place I like is Pho Bang New York in Chinatown, but there are a few places on Cote des Neiges that are good too. :)

For the best dumpling, I agree for Qing Hua (1676 Lincoln), one block away of the Guy-Concordia subway station (if you take the St-Mathieu Street exit)

Bigger variety than Mai Xiang Yuan,

And also wine, sake and beer on the menu

Chateaulafite and Aspen,

I have been to Qing Hua and I think Mai Xiang Yuan is as good, but I agree Mai Xiang Yuan has a more limited menu. The only disappointment for me at Mai Xiang Yuan is they don't have any pure shrimp or seafood dumplings- only mixes of shrimp and pork or other seafood and pork. I like the seafood dumplings best usually, and I had to settle for pork/shrimp/mushroom combo which was very, very good, but still I would prefer shrimp.

I get my dumplings with soy sauce and extra hot chili oil!

@EB, thanks for info on Chinatown 2.

* Kazu: I am a huge fan, you mentioned it, have you tried?
* Saigon VIP: ate there (when Kazu was too busy), not bad, but definitely St Laurent/Clark is better for Pho in downtown.
* Cacao 70: will try next time; ate at Juiliette/Chocolat at Faubourg, it was good, but mostly cause of the company, LOL
* Dumplings: ate at Mai Xiang Yuan on St Laurent many times, never been to Ste Catherines location. Have you tried "Quing Hua"? It was great for steamed dumplings, but had a couple poor experiences recently.

* Pho: Cote de Nieges, Everyone say Pho Lien" has the best Pho in Montreal, but I've NEVER been there :(

SloCumHeat,
Sammie is the same owner as Quing Hua, they use the same plates and logo, last I recall.
I do not recall the names of the places on Cote-des-neiges, but one place I recall was within walking distance of the two Hospitals there and the Metro. I prefer the hole in the wall places for Pho to be honest.
Kazu used to be the best and I miss it (Too long waits and I get really hungry). Have you tried the Izakayas close by? I personally love Kinka (maybe it's the name) or Imadake! Both great choices for Ramen and other Tapas.
Cacao 70 is WAY better than Juliette et Chocolat, a lot more variety, less bon bon sales.

EB try the Lamb dumplings, steamed or pan fried, unless you do not like lamb. Let me know. Those are my faves. :)

CA69,

I do like lamb and I considered getting the lamb combo dumplings but I went with the hostesses' two recommendations which were pork/leek and pork/shrimp/mushroom.

I have been to Qung Hua- is Sammi Dumpling similar? I thought Mai Xiang Yuan as good as Quin Hua.

Both places (Sammi and Mai) are great but Sammi has soup dumplings which Mai does not. Sammi an Qing Hua are the same.

This is why I went to Mai Xiang Yuan rather than Sammi. I perceived that Sammi was specializing in Shanghai style soup dumplings and I was more in the mood for the regular dumplings. I have had soup dumplings at places in NYC as well. I was more in the mood for dim sum and I figured Mai Xiang Yuan was as close as I was going to get. There are two very good pure dim sum restaurants in Chinatown I. I think one of called Le Maison Kam Fung and is on St. Urban and the other one is Ruby Rouge on Clark. Dim sum traditionally is only served during lunch so I knew it was not going to happen at 10:00 pm or so but those dumplings are more in that style and close as I was going to get.

Yeah EB,
Montreal used to be more Dim Sum oriented in Chinatown with a lot more variety. Now I think there are only 3 choices. As you said, Ruby Rouge and La Maison Kam Fung, but there is one in the shopping complex called Le Crystal Chinois (If I am not mistaken).

My personal preference would be Le Crystal, more Hong Kong style where you pick via a menu and not have to wait around for the girls with the carts. Hope this helps!
