Recenty the choices for Mayor of the Nation's Capital were: A liar, a thief and a ***.

If that is any indication as far as magnitute of fake in English speaking Canada, then yes, I say to all my French friends: bail out as soon as you can, save your asses before its too late :D

Personnally I don,t mind if the politician is a ***,but a thief and a crook I do mind,and there's a lot still around(remember Gomery....)
As for thieves and crooks, well they were around way before pq and bq were even founded.
So oliver sorry to disagree but I think it's the other way around, they(pq,bq) are following the examples set way before them(liberals,conservatives...)

What kind of a shit disturber are you, Esco?

Esco,

Things are getting better here in Quebec without you stirring up shit with your talk of seperation. The younger people know that they exist in a world econony and that selling your goods, services and expertise to the world is better than to one small market that is mostly concentrated on the island of Montreal.
It was the educated elite of the french population in this province that wanted seperation, and the polititians that parasited themselves into the situation that got the english and the french fighting each other.
I believe that even the seperatist polititians did not believe what they were spouting at the time. You will rememeber that many of these seperatist polititians were educated in english universities outside of Quebec, and this was also true of many of their children.
We do not need an outside adjitator to come in here at MERB and stir things up, just so that you can participate in some sort of discussion. ( any sort of discussion )

Quebec is a Nation in the same way as Merb is a Nation. Actually I think that Merb is more of a Nation than Quebec...at least we all have something in common here on the board.

Separatist, federalist, Pequiste, Conservative, Liberal (ESPECIALLY Liberal!), NDP, Republican, Democrat - it doesn't matter: if you're a politician, odds are you're a lying, thieving sack of shit.

Politicians were lying, thieving sacks of shit long before the Internet. Some things never change.

Quebec in general is far more socialist leaning than the rest of Canada, save Toronto and Vancouver. I do think that it is a distinct society within Canada and I was a supporter of Meech Lake which would have repaired the damage caused by the disastrous Trudeau administration. But it was not to be thanks to political backstabbing by Clyde Wells and the Federal Liberals led by Chretien. So now we are where we are today still nothing resolved. We need certainty if Quebec is going to thrive within Canada. I think the Conservative Party is attempting to accomodate Quebec's demands as best they can. Unfortunately, the Conservatives cannot gain much ground due to the differing philosophies between their party and the majority of Quebeckers on issues related to foreign and social policy. I just want a resolution either way so that we can move forward.

the damage caused by the disastrous Trudeau administration.

I love how people always try to blame Trudeau. Does everyone forget the mailbox bombings, the FLQ kidnappings and murder? Constant separatist bitching and complaining? Referendums, plural only because separatists can't accept the will of the people? Trudeau was the only Prime Minister of Canada to stand up to Quebec. If other politicians had the balls he had, this problem would no longer exist. But nooo, we have to keep trying to satisfy Quebec who will never be satisfied until they are in charge of the entire country. It's just like trying to satisfy a spoiled child, it will never be possible.

As far as Quebec 'thriving' in Canada...they were thriving in Canada before all this shit started getting out of hand. They have no one to blame but themselves for what this province has become. Nation my ass.

Actually Quebec is like a young adult that wants to move out of his parent's home but expects them to pick up part of his rent and living expenses, allows him to come home to do his laundry and eat dinner and will leave the door open for him to come back if things don't work out the way he wants them to.

Public recognition that Quebecers form a nation within a united Canada is more than adequate.

It's amazing that with all the problems in Canada, not to mention the world in general, our governments are still wasting time and money discussing this. Enough already! If Quebec separatists want to have a country let them fight for it outright. All this bullshit political posturing is a waste of time and money. You want a country? Then form an army and take it by force. Put your ass on the line instead of running off at the mouth. The US had their war of independance maybe it's time we had ours.

How much time and money and growth has this pointless discussion cost Quebec and Canada? How much will it continue to cost us? Canada should either close all discussions on this topic or just show Quebec the door and get on with things. This has to stop.

One last little thing...no matter how many people are forced to speak in french, work in french and live in french, they will never be french. They will always be 'les autres' to the 'pur laine', to the Quebecois.

Johnhenrygalt makes the clever point that in a democracy one generation can't bind the next...so I guess that means that if the neverendum referendum actually goes the separatist way at some sad point then there can be ANOTHER referendum maybe 10 years later to get BACK into Canada. After all jhgalt, we all now know that in a democracy one generation can't bind the next (or does the argument work for only one side, as most racist arguments do?)

Why do you worry about what the pure laine Québécois think about the others? The « Peuple Québécois » is dying slowly, and will have mostly disappeared when the cohorts of baby boomers will be dead.

Nonsense. No one is forced to speak French. I go through my days speaking English 95% of the time, and I could make it 100% if I wanted to. I only speak French when I choose to (usually when speaking to a hot Québécoise).
Every time I come to Montreal (one of my favourite cities in the world) I have no problem speaking English to people. I've never gotten a dirty look or anything like that.

Mais je veux aprrendre Francais parceque quand je voyage ou autre petit villes en Quebec je rencontre beaucoup femmes qui ne parle pas Anglais.
Ceci le raison je veux aprrendre parlez couramment de Francais.

And yes I know i have quite a ways to go :D
